Do you listen to rap and hip/hop? If so, how long?

It's not a favorite genre of mine but I've been listening to things that peek my interest for a dozen years or more...

Okay... thank you biggrin

Actually, I take that back as it must be well longer than a dozen years... I can remember being a teen going into the local record shop to buy novelty 12" singles from DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince well before I started listening to rap as a genre of it's own.

I guess my point is this: Yes. Prince has always used slang. Prince has not always used "urban" slang. There's a difference. I think that's the thing that you're missing. There are certain terms that start off in urban areas and it takes a while before it reaches the masses (i.e. "You Go Girl! <- Martin had been off of the air for years before "the masses" started using it, "Go ____, it's your birthday" <- Would "the masses" know who Luke Campbell is?) If Prince is so comfortable with "urban" slang, then he would incorporate it immediately when the phrases are relatively new. It would be easier to hear Prince sing or say "hood" if he had been doing it back in the late 80s and early 90s when the term originated. Otherwise he sounds late to the party and well... AWKWARD!

He's had almost 7 years to say "Break you off"... Maybe some of you weren't familiar with the term because you don't listen to rap/hip-hop/R&B. I don't know. I do know because I've never heard him sing it.. it sounds awkward to me in 2006.

Damn it, just for that I'm going to listen to the "Daisy Chain" If memory serves me correctly, I think this song is one of his worst offenders.

I HAD to make this face whofarted when he said "break you off like u knew I would" in BS. Fuck street cred. He doesn't need it. He has industry cred.

Some of the terms seem thrown in for effect some don't. "Break you off" isn't one of them. I know people who have been saying that since the 80's. And I don't think it's really fair to question Prince's use of some of these terms since none of us on this board (as far as I know) hang out with the guy on a regualr basis in our leisure time. All I know is that Prince has been hanging with Billy Sparks for a long ass time and if I'm not mistaken Billy is from Detroit where urban slang is the norm.

Like I said, this thread is purely for fun and games. If Prince strolls around the house saying 'Sippin' on some sizzurip!" on a regular, that's fine. I'm not saying he doesn't have the right. He can hang with Billy Sparks, 50 Cent, Snoop D.O.double gizzle... whoever he wants. But in BSK3601's opinion, when Prince uses urban slang, it sounds contrived... point blank, brohem!

Maybe Prince wasn't tryin' to get street cred, maybe he meant he was gonna "break you off a" piece of that Kit Kat bar. falloff (I crack myself up sometimes!!)

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

So unless folks are agreeing with you comments aren't allowed? Cause that response was a little salty for a thread that's supposed to be "just in fun". confused

F'in' funny thread!
Let's face it, part of his appeal is the cringe-worthiness:
come on, when did u ever NOT cringe 2 LPWM or "UR a Double-Drag Fool"?

That's not 2 say that I didn't walk around sayin' "slammin'", "crucial" etc. for a while! wink

Any u been 2 MPLS (Dansa lives there don't u?)? When I was there 4 the 1st Celly, it seemed 2 b a bit of a "bubble" society. It's also a bit remote, so it's possible that the version of street cred slang that arrives there is a bit late and distorted. Shit, that would explain a lot of PR the movie and the Gangsta Glam vid!!!
I don't think P is cut off from street culture, tho. He seems 2 try (prob'ly way TOO much) to stay in touch, hang out with peeps, and not live in some "Neverland" (pls ignore the comparison!).
"We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"

the midwest as a whole pretty much is a bubble society--trends and/or slang arrive here relatively late as it is.
