I know that's right. I remember there was something on Mtv a while back when Timberfake's first single from his solo album came out and Pharrell was on there saying how it "sounds like something Prince would come up with in a jam session" He needed a Nigga Please award for saying that shit because no it doesn't.

Everyone one of these artist will say they bite off Prince except for MJ and he knows that there are songs Prince made that he wish he could tie his name to. The only people that Prince patterned his style after is James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. These other people are Prince Biters so get your facts right. You must be a youngster with no kind of extensive musical knowledge of past and present artist.

Could I just make a comment here and say that although Ive only been a member here for a couple of weeks it totally amazes me how some of you come down on Prince when we are all supposed to be celebrating the talent of this guy?? I mean, theres no harm in a little 'healthy' criticism but some of the comments Ive read on here are enough to make me think is this a 'hate' Prince site?? No ones perfect and I think some of you need to realise just what this guy has done for music - hes free to do what the hell he wants and for all the 'true' Prince fans out there Im sure youll agree that we'd support him no matter what.

Damn, this is THE most ignorant post I've ever seen... and that's a big statement.

"Black Sweat" is pure Prince all the way. Do U have a pair of ears? Hmmmmm... who was one of the few original Linn Drum users?

"Lolita" is pure Prince.

I don't get the MJ comparison with "Love" at all.

Man, I hope that Prince is laughing uncontrollably at this.

The egg came 1st, and all the other ChickenHeads were the offspring... some talented, some not.

Prince's influence was broader and bigger than U think, my friend.

oh and then jacks MJ's entire style on Love

It's like each year this guy loses his genius label with each release

How about Michael Jackson's in the closet and the when does cry type intro to why you wanna trip on me from the dangerous album. Love sounds nothing like MJ

Black sweat does bite new beats that you hear today like missy misdemeanor, but not the Neptunes also Prince has been singing striped down funk like kiss and when doves cry for years. On Okayplayer.com they say Black sweat bites the Neptunes, because of the synths. I guess they never heard uptown.

Prince has been using the call and response since The Time's 1981 Cool written by prince and Dez. Lolita sounds more like a pop version of soft and wet with Andre Cymones kelly's eyes thrown in. When I first heard hey ya I thought of Prince. When I hear alot of things by Andre 3000 I think of Prince.

Te Amo Corazon? Prince has played with latin music since working with Sheila E. Stevie Wonder (Who wrote and performed don't you worry about a thing) has been singing latin flavored balleds before Prince or Sade ever walked into a studio.

[b]This is a very said thread, what I'm reading is I guess very young people who know nothing about the real music history of Prince's music, the artist that were named are the ones who idolized Prince, Prince has changed Soul music as we know it, he has paved the way for other artists to do what he has already done,(combinding all forms of music) These artist that were mentioned "TRY TO BE LIKE PRINCE" the only artist that Prince has "Bitten off of" is (What is really a compiment to) is James Brown, Prince has been doing Funky beats for over 20yrs. he has nothing left to prove...he has done it all, no samples real musical instruments, real musicians....True "FUNK GENIUS".....GOD BLESS U ALL.....KEEP REAL FUNK ALIVE....

Prince lacks musical confidence.

His songs are really lacking emotion, drive and desire. We need more songs like The Dance, and less of Prince trying to be a hip 50 year old by biting His songs are really lacking emotion, drive and desirepeople that bite him.

He even bite lil jon with those damn synths.

I would sure like to know what music you are listening to. P has more emoition in his music than any of the artist out today. I guess you never listened to any of his ballads. I have watched people fucking cry when he does Adore live.

Prince does his own thing and gets noticed by the critics who call him an innovator (the '80s).

Newcomers pick up on Prince's scent and suddenly you have a bunch of copycats, meanwhile Prince still does his own thing and now critics say he's "singing to an audience that's left him behind" (the '90s)

After years of Prince's sound infiltrating the "musical world", Prince is STILL doing his own thing and is being labeled a follower (the '00s)

Prince made the "money" and other people get credit for spending it. eek

Yes, I'm very serious. I think Hey Ya! has been one of the best pop songs in recent memory. It has everything a pop song should have. Fun, catchy, inventive. I don't know what you mean by imagining there was no Andre, etc, because there is and he wrote it and Prince didn't, simple as that. Daydream all you want in a world where what if Prince wrote this or that, but I don't see the point of playing those type of what-if games. But if Prince made a pop song that good, and he has, yes, I would also think it was definitive.

-And to clarify with my earlier statement, I was speaking about 3121. There's nothing as definitive as Hey Ya! on 3121 in the field of pop music. Not even close imho.

ok...I don't really see it as playing a game..it was a hypothetical question..if you wanna call it daydreaming thats fine...I still believe that if he recorded that song or any other recent pop hit, it wouldn't be considered definitive pop because he recorded it...I guess people expect more from him because of his past work...but thats only in my dreamworld...

And I agree that Hey Ya! is a hot song...hey, waddaya know..common ground biggrin

I think the problem is, Prince just hasn't written a song as good as Hey Ya! lately, there's no grand conspiracy. Look at the singles he's released. Just going off the top of my head, The One, I Hate U, Gold, Come On, Musicology, Black Sweat, etc... Not bad songs but also nothing as good as Hey Ya! And I'm sure there is a lot of terrible music out there that those songs best, but Hey Ya! is a rare exception of great pop that the masses and music snobs can love because it's an artful slice of pop, not just a throwaway hit, imho.

And just to clarify myself even further, my main point was, to think Prince is 'biting' Andre 3000 by saying "Caddy" is ridiculous. If he wants to 'bite' Andre 3000, he needs to come up with something as innovative as Andre 3000 has been putting out not just say "Caddy."
No hard feelings.

I agree with you...somewhat...
I still think that if Prince did write a song as good as Hey Ya, it wouldn't be as acclaimed or appreciated....I don't think its a grand conspiracy, I think the pop audience views him as an 80's star and a 90's weirdo...any of those songs you mentioned could be recorded by any of todays pop stars...same production, same everything...and be considered great pop songs...
...ok, maybe not Come On biggrin

Yeah, I don't really know about that. But the bottom-line is, Prince HASN'T recorded anything like Hey Ya! in the last umpteen years.

I think Prince had a heyday where he could do no wrong and I think Outkast is currently in that stage. In the long run will Prince have done more to shape the pop landscape? I think there's no question and he's obviously a much more taltented musician, but in terms of production, I think one could make a case for Andre 3000 ultimately being just as good, if not better. Note to the apologists, I'm not saying Andre 3000 IS, I'm saying time will tell.

Maybe a bit of a wandering thought, but I also think a lot can be said for Andre 3000 likely being more in touch with the common person than Prince when it comes to producing and making music for today. Prince lives in a ivory, or, purple tower, and has for his career, whereas Andre, while obviously owing a lot to Prince (just as Prince owes a load to JB, Sly Stone, Clinton, Santanta, etc), isn't as far removed from the daily rituals of those he's making music for.
