"Ever since Prince turned himself into a symbol." It's simply a time reference- neither a diss nor a praise.

Em says "Now lets go, give me the signal I'll be there with a whole list full of new insults/ I've been dope, suspenseful with a pencil ever since Prince turned himself into a symbol". I don't really know what this means, but I think he's talking about writing songs. Anyone else have any suggestions as to what this means?

I agree that it's about writing songs. Most people don't know that he was writing songs well before "My Name Is."

I don't know it sounds like a diss? He's full of insults ever since Prince turned into a symbol or could be taken the other way that he got inspired by the change. I think it goes both ways.

if it had been intended as any sort of a 'diss' you can be sure he would've seized the opportunity to put a prince look-alike in his video...

Has anyone noticed that the beginning of "Without Me" sounds a lot like the music to "Billy Jean" (I'm sure it's Billy Jean..it's a Michael Jackson song anyway)? Maybe it's just me. He even does the "wooo!" right after.

There's a mix at the clubs of both songs. Pretty cool. No Doubt took the exact beat for "Hella Good" too.

Notice after the Prince line the chime sound. It's from the "symbol" album commercial. Dr Dre is cool.

I don't think Eminem is dissing Prince at all. I mean, anyone who knows Eminem's music knows that being discreet about how he feel about an artist is NOT his style. I think that he is trying to say that along with his being "dope" he can also be "suspenseful" and then he just likened himself to Prince at one of the most "suspenseful" times in his career...when he changed his name to a symbol! It's not clear whether Em is a Prince fan or not. He probably intended it that way because that wasn't the point of the song. That statement was just an ingredient in his recipe of "artistic expression" That's just my take on it.

Same exact thing I figured. Plus it rhymed with pencil. smile

Actually, now that I think about it...it rhymed best with "signal". It really doesn't matter. lol

Okay Stop The Who Got What Beat From Where.

No Doubt's Hella Good Beat Goes Further Back Than Billy Jean - Its a lot more like Anita Wards -"Ring My Bell" including the little "Booo" sound.

Alot of those kind of beats used all over the place today came from 70's Disco Funk or Dance Beats.

Has anyone noticed the little sound MM's song makes when he says "into a symbol"??
It's strikingly similar to the sound of the symbol from the Sexy MF video--sounds like a sword out of its sheeth.
just wondering

What's the beginning of the rap though is it Prince ker Patrick you're gonna get your Ass kicked in worst than those little Limpt Biscuit Bastards? Is this a Prince dis? Then he talks about Prince as a symbol. I just like Eminem. I think he's Good looking and I like his music. I listen to him a lot and I can relate to him. He's cool.

I'm thinkin' if Eminem didn't like Prince he would have jumped at the opportunity to slam him. His verse mentioning Prince isn't opinionated at all. This leads me to believe he digs Prince on some level.

He thought enough of Prince to mention him, but didnt diss him.

Maybe he digs the Prince he grew up listening to but isnt really digging the Prince of late (like some of us).

The line, as I recall, says "I've been suspensful with a pencil ever since Prince turned himself into a symbol..."

Which has been what, 10 years ago? Which I always took as meaning Eminem's been writing good for 10 years.

It's not a slam, or a "I like Prince" statement. It's a measure of time...At least that's what I get when I listen to it.

And it's not Prince Kirpatrick, it's CHRIS Kirpatrick, as in the MTV guy who does, you know, MTV news and stuff. He's old, and annoying. But then, everything on MTV is pretty annoying...
