Depends on u're time frame for dissapointment. I've never been dissapointed upon first listen of an album (almost there w/ rainbow children - but still fooled myself into diggin it); but have grown dissapointed over time w/ the albums (news, rainbow, musicology, new power soul, Rave)

let me clarify-

I've never been disappointed with a Prince album.

It's not that I think everything he shits out is golden. Some is better, some is worse. However, I don't have rigid guidelines, expectations, or hopes for any new Prince album. I think Prince's music can be life altering, but it doesn't need to be for me to like it. I am not always hoping for his next to be "The Best Ever". I like New Power Soul-do I think it's his best and he can do no wrong? No, but the album is cool in my opinion. It is what it is and I like it. Oreo Cookies are not my favorite snack food ever, but I still enjoy them.

My question is this- Does our expectations for a Prince album (or any art) affect our enjoyment when listening to it?

Well, U got me. I gotta agree. The reason for my dissapointment is always my expecation that it'll be groundbreaking, the next black album. But that's kinda lame. I do like New power soul - still listen to it. While i'm dissapointed, I still like it. Those are two different concepts, and sounds like you have one but not the other. Good way 2 go; easier said than done - for prince albums or anything else in life.

I've never been. But I don't "understand" all of them.

Me alive, I'll never spit on his music.

My only expectation when hearing a new Prince album is for it to be enjoyable to listen to.

In that regard, I have been disappointed by him before.

Same here... It's a choice between silence, or listening to the album... If I pick silence, then I'm disappointed with the album. Which has happened to me with quite a few prince albums.

Obviously everyone has their fave albums, not every album can qualify for all of us. whenever u feel disappointed remember this - p is one of the most prolific artists out there. would u prefer him to hold back and only release an album every five years? granted that may make each album stronger, but personally, i much prefer to the privilege of sharing p's entire artistic journeys. both the highs and the lows. if an album or a song is not what i hoped i still find it very interesting. besides, there are very few p songs that i can't find anything in that redeems them. maybe a guitar part, maybe the lyrics, maybe the bridge, maybe a classic p scream. how can anyone fairly complain about one album or even a series of albums when there is such great quality scattered throughout his catalogue. i tend to listen to p's albums as a whole rather that to rip tracks from all over the place to create a fave disc. the thought of doing that is so daunting that i never bother. where do u start, and what do u leave off? Short answer - i am never disappointed because i don't expect every album to b the next purlple rain or sott. there are always tracks that i love and none that i hate.

That would make you a cultist, not a fan. Prince is a flawed human, he makes bad albums and good--mostly good, but not lately.

I wasn't until 1994...Come, then New Power Soul, then Rave....luckily The Rainbow Children and One Nite Alone Live came around and swooped me back into the dove cage.

Didn't you first discover him around the time of "Batman"? If I had first discovered him around this time, I would never have been disappointed either. The very next thing was the 1990s and almost everyone's music was horrible. Prince was definately the best sounding thing on the radio by then.

I'm lying, I would have still been pissed off with "The Truth", "New Power Soul", "Rave", and "NEWS". lol

I always find 3-4 songs on each album that I enjoy. I may not like every song on every album, but I can always find a few that are great! So, I would have to say that there isn't an album that I dislike.

To me anything he done from 1978-84 is no disappointment. I loved every song he made from For You to Purple Rain and that included his outtakes he did in that era.

but after 1985, I found myself being displease at least two songs he done on each album and also that is when I started to like maybe a couple of songs or so per album. SOTT and Batman is exceptional.

I knew about Prince for forever, but I only really got into him around "Batman". Anyways, I backtracked and by the time the 90's hit I had all of Prince's albums up to that point. So I knew the history.

I honestly have never reached a point where I would never want to listen to an album. Considering that three of my first Prince albums were Musicology, New Power Soul and Come, I'm sure many of you would be absolutely in shock! But I can seriously find something to like in every single album, and I almost always play the entire album all the way through. In the last two or three days, I've listened to Come all the way through every day.

Without a doubt I have never been dissapointed with any of his albums.
Even his weakest songs, IMO, is better than most of the stuff floating around on the radio.

I am always surprised how his every note .. his every melody speaks to me in a profound way. He is the only artist that I thoroughly and profoundly enjoy every thing he does, always. His albums are a great ride and I love how he experiments with different musical themes.. like Madhouse and the rainbow children... everything is so fantastically yummy.

He never dissapoints me. Prince is a absolute genius and I love em! xoxox

I think I've never been disappointed by any NEW album by Prince (new = I first listened to it during the time it was released - everything from 1991 in my case). Maybe that's because I've never had specific expectations what it should be like or how great it should be - I just listen to the stuff, that's it. I like most albums, there are some that I like less (Come, for example), but that doesn't mean I'm disappointed - I just try to listen without prejudice.

Now for albums from his back catalogue (pre-1991 in my case), that's a different thing. People tend to make so much fuss about his 80's work that I really had high expectations for all those records. First, I was a little bit disappointed about "Purple Rain" - it just took me a few listens to realize its greatness. I'm still a little disappointed about "Parade" - highly praised by many, but pretty uneven imo.

i get disappointed at some individual songs more than entire albums. There's strength and weakness in nearly all his albums.

i think alot of peoples views are influenced by what they read on here, it's quite possible there are fans out there with no Net access that really dig NPS, but once they get up in here, the story might well change.
