Do u reckon Universal had alot to do with this album, because it sounds like 3121, Te amo, and get on the boat were meant for his fans, and the rest are just crappy pop songs for the younger people to sell the album, do U reckon Universal said, we want this, this, and this just so it makes us money and U money!

After spending an evening with this album at a friend's who had a copy, I have to say, there's really nothing on this record that's worthy of Prince's best or even a recent highlight.

....

Ultimately, if you like Musicology and Rave or like everything Prince has done, you'll enjoy this record. If you think the aforementioned studio albums have been lacking, it's going to be hit and miss, emphasis on the miss.

No, I just think Prince is out of touch with where he should be at his age.

He doesn't need to compete with people two decades younger but that is what he is attempting and failing at.

still a 2 star album for me...

Highlights:
3121
Te Amo Corazon (i can't believe this is a highlight)
Love
Fury
The Dance

Lowlights:
Lolita (nice song, but all that cliche shit towards the end is cheesy)
Satisfied (On The couch part two.. half baked idea)
The Word (nice song, cheesy sounding keyboard horns)
Get on the Boat - too cheesy of horns for me.. nice song other than that tho

That's interesting because those are two albums that don't really do much at all for me, but I'm surprised to say that overall I really like 3121. People's tastes are so different that it's hard to generalize as to who will like what album.

Yes this album has a nod to what's "current". However, imho, he integrates those sounds well into his own thing. That ability to take disparate musical influences and incorporate them into something uniquely Prince is part of the reason I became a fan.

It's odd that around here it seems like if Prince is influenced by James Brown, Joni Mitchell, Hendrix, Santana, etc.. then everything is cool. But if Prince is influenced by something more "current" .... well then he's compromised his sound to be hip. Personally, I'm not that concerned with the vintage of his influences. If those influences result in something that I want to hear, bring 'em on.

Well, I guess my review got snipped along with the other stuff. Rather than go through it again, I'll just say that I was really looking forward to this CD, but overall I was very dissapointed.

Both his lyrics, and more sadly his music, has become VERY bland, uninspired and forgettable. I wonder if he still knows what it takes to write a well-crafted song...if he does, he hasn't demonstrated it for a while now.

Oh, and not that it matters to me (Lovesexy was FAR from a hit, but still brilliant!), but anybody predicting this album will be a 'hit' I think will be sorely dissapointed as well.

I couldn't disagree more. Here's my review...

3121 = A. This is a great way to start the album. I love Prince's esoteric music. On par, and even better, than tracks such as "The Ball," "Crystal Ball," and "Rebirth of the Flesh." Funky and you can't stop listening.

Lolita = A-. A poppy, fun track that puts a smile on my face. Sounds like nothing else out there now. Cheesy, funky, and addicting at the same time. Plus, it's about an underage girl, mentions Frank and Ava, and a 56 pink caddy. Synths up the ass, too. How could you not love it?

Te Amo Corazon = B+. A well made song. Not "impressive" or "groundbreaking" on it's own, but fits perfectly on the album and I've got a brand new respect for the song. It's very adult sounding. A sleeper hit and a "closet fave" to say the least. Nice track, man!

Black Seat = B-. It's funky, the first real mainstream pleaser on the album. Most people that are more casual Prince fans and those not familiar with his back catalog seem to absolutely love it (see MySpace). I like the song, but enjoy songs with a melody.

Incense and Candle = D. The only song on the album I don't like at all (yet).

Love = A. A classic song. The 2nd funkiest song on the album, next to the title track. This is more mainstream, though. Think Sleep Around taken to the nth degree. It's bad ass!

Satisifed = A. A perfect song. Lyrically, structurally, and vocally. Essentially a much better version of "On the Couch," which was a rambling mess.

Fury = A. More laid back than the live version, But that's expected. There's still great guitar playing on this track, but it's more synth based which I don't mind. I think the vocals are killer. Is the live version better? Yes. But, the live version is ICNTTPOYM is better, too.

The Word = B+. Nice song so far, Deeper than some of the other songs on the album, I have to listen more.

Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed = B. Sounds good to me, even moreso on the album. Just a quality r&b track with a positive message.

The Dance = A-. Freaky, beautiful, and old-school at the same time. A cinematic masterpiece. I've never heard the original version. You could tell me it's a 1999, Purple Rain, or Parade outtake and I'd be fooled.

Get on the Boat - B. Funky, with a good message, but I'm not completely feeling it yet. Nice horns by Maceo.

3121 - Thought this track was ok. Wouldn't have sounded out of place on NPS though. Was a bad choice of opening track, should have been...

Lolita - I love this track! Shows he can still write an original pop tune without worrying too much about what Mary J or Pharell would think. Also the call and response bit at the end reminds me so much of Cool. Best track on the album by far and should be a great single release.

Te Amo Corazon - It's an ok track but kinda just plods along for me.

Black Sweat - Funky track and works better with the video. Would have made a better b-side if they still existed wink.

Incense and Candles - I really hate this track mostly because of the vocal effect on his voice. I can understand why Victoria Beckham would use it as she can't sing, but Prince?? Why?!?!?

Love - Has its moments, and there are a couple of nice musical touches towards the end, but just doesn't do it for me.

Satisfied - I know, sounds a lot like.....but still think it's a nice track.

Fury - Such a shame, just doesn't translate onto an album track. Although having said that I prefer him going down this direction and attempting something new rather than trying to sound like everything else on MTV Base a la Incense and Candles.

The Word - Would have loved this track if it wasn't for the really weak keyboard "sax" part that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a kids show or Benny Hill!

Beautiful Loved and Blessed - Good track and would make a good single, though not sure what a song with Tamar (I'm assuming it's her) as the lead is doing on Prince's album.

The Dance - This is very close to being in the spirit of an old Revolution track. I could have imagined this as an outtake to Parade. Lovely track and something different and brave to include on this album. Should have been the last track.

Get on the Boat - Weak last track, very repetitive and dull.

The reason I love Prince is because he was an innovator in music and not scared to do something new and different. There's not enough of that in this record for me and it just sounds like him trying to be "current" and "down" with what's happening on the urban charts. I'd just wish he'd turn himself off to all that crap and go back to being an innovator again. Songs like Lolita and The Dance still give me hope that he can be that artist again.

that's one of the things that bugs me, the Hip Slang-Droppage For Credibility Coat (i still should think of an acronym for that!) he tosses on within the album at certain points. prince, you needn't prove yourself as hip and "down" with folks--you fall on yer face HARD when you try. you're fine the way you are; you've never needed to prove your coolness to me as it is.

I don't think Prince has ever felt comfortable with the Hip-Hop/Rap crowd. He comes off sounding threatened by them when he does this stuff.

He should just stay away from it.

Woke up this morning and found a copy of the album in my e mail box. Now, I said way back when, that no matter what, I wasn't going to listen to this album before it was actually released. I wanted to fully experience this CD, including the packaging, CD booklet and all that jazz. Plus I thought I was going to enjoy the build up and all the hype generated to promote this CD. Now today, I sit here looking at these files (Scared after reading Dansa's and others reviews) and wonder if I should just stick to my word?

Your first instinct is usually the correct one. wink

After reading all of these mediocre reviews today, the hype is really over for me; so I guess I'll give it a listen today.

You're so vain, you think he's trying to prove his coolness to you. I think you're stuck in the past.

where's the "vain" and "in the past" in that? as of late, he has been attempting to try and be somewhat hip. almost like he did back in 1991, with the game boyz and all that horrendous shite...nowadays, he ain't trying balls-out to be "in", as opposed to back in '91.

still, you cannot deny this. it's got nothing to do with being "stuck" anywhere. 'sides, you were griping about the brotha just a few weeks ago, weren't ya? at any rate, may as well put this up while the puttin-up's good:

I definitely will not be buying this CD. I listened to it at a friend's yesterday and honestly, there is nothing on it that is vital to Prince, it sounds more embarassing to the man's great legacy.

It's too bad he got back in the spotlight a few years ago, had he continued to be ignored, I wonder what kind of funky muse he would have continued to follow. He was certainly doing some very interesting things musically with TRC and the ONA tour... "If you drove up in a Little Red Corvette, you might be surprised what you gonna get." Was as punk, in spirit, as he'd ever been, albeit with a very holy muse at that moment guiding his thoughts. Now he seems driven to get a pop hit, which has always been his achilles heel, and he's saying things like "Bounce!" and "There won't be no drama," while giving props to his "rims," all amidst a sea of swirling pre-fabricated, trend chasing pop music.

"It's going down like the Berlin Wall." Yeah, Prince, you so street!

Hopefully he'll wake up, realize his age, and get back to making some exciting, challenging music that's a natural progression of his unique genius as opposed to regressing into a VH1 wannabe hitmaker.

So, you want Prince to realize his "age" and do what? Start making lounge music? He's almost 50 years old. [Flame snipped - BananaCologne] "Get on the Boat" and "The Dance" really sound like "VH1 hits....."

So, even if Prince has great rims on his car, he shouldn't mention them in his songs? What if he really loves those rims, hugs, kisses, and cleans them every day? Should Prince, instead, sing about things more his age, like getting a prostate exam? What if, Prince mentioned Xbox 360? Would he still be not acting his age? What if he grew up with "Atari" and was still a videogame fan? Isn't 40 something the new 30 something, anyway? Are there subjects Prince isn't allowed to talk about?

What's an age-neutral lyric? You don't think there are 60 year old executives with beautiful rims on their beautiful cars?
