I just hope that all of the folks enjoying the leaked album plan on actually buying a copy when it drops. I have no problem with folks hearing it ahead of time (I'm doing so myself), but let's do the right thing and actually purchase it upon release. I'd already ordered it. I actually didn't expect to have a chance to hear the album before that. Since my CD won't arrive for quite a while after the release date I decided I just couldn't wait.

Fauxie said: Not that we need one, but here's my review all the same:
3121 - Feels more like a groove, an intro, than a full-fledged song. Has a little head-bobbing effect and a bit of idiosyncracy about it (quirky guitar, voices), which sets it apart from some of the other tracks. Had potential for being something a little better, but all in all it's alright. Could've done without those synth horns. Doesn't quite satisfy. Lolita - Goes straight in with a keyboard riff that reminds me of 'IWBYL', but the actual keyboard sound could've been better. It's straight up fun pop, kinda catchy but ultimately not my thing. A little too fluffy and Emancipation-eque. Wouldn't have made my 1 disc CDR of that 3 disc album. Te Amo Corazon - Sweet track, beautiful production and instrumentation, but doesn't conjure up any more exciting adjectives than 'nice' or 'pleasant'. I wouldn't skip it, I'd enjoy it, but it could pass me right by if I weren't sitting there specifically to listen to it. Black Sweat - Sparse, electronic funk track that is too short and for me never really hits stride. Another that doesn't quite satisfy. Some funky rhythm guitar would've improved it in IMHO, but even with that addition wouldn't feel like a good song. Incense and Candles - Sexy, without a doubt, with some nice touches, but again just not that good a song. Production is good, some nice sounds and a smoothness to it that in this case I don't think detracts, but in conclusion only an average track. Love - A kinda funky track which combines electronic elements with some nice rhythm guitar licks. The hook is nice, but the verses are pretty poor. The ending is where the track gets funkiest the more the guitar is prominent. Satisfied - As many have said, very similar to 'On The Couch' but lacking something interesting like the vocal horns on the aforementioned track. Nice instrumentation, pleasing loose feel to the structure and playing, but passes by without really registering. Pleasant enough, but hardly taxing for ol' boy. He could write 3 of these a day and I'm beginning to think perhaps he does. Fury - As suspected, and often feared, disappoints compared to the SNL performance. Sounds pretty soft, keyboards too prominent, guitar not prominent enough, vocals just so-so and a little quiet in the mix. Even the scream towards the end has a perfunctory feel about it. A cool song that I do quite like, but having seen the SNL performance it's hard not to feel a little disappointed. Knew it was coming though, unfortunately. The Word - Acoustic guitar is a nice touch and there's quite a nice feel about this track. Lyrics aren't the best, but it's not a big issue. An enjoyable track without being that catchy or interesting. The usual nice touches here and there, some cool guitar work and a good vibe about it, but certainly not a great song. Beautiful, Loved and Blessed - A decent pop Rnb track, some nice vocals from both Tamar and Prince. Good structure and quite catchy and a funky coda at the conclusion. All in all quite a well put together track with decent instrumentation. Quite good, will probably work well on Tamar's album. Doesn't break any molds but is a pleasant listen. The Dance - Greatly improves on the other version. Has a nice mood about it and some subtly emotive singing. Piano work is good and fits well. I think this is one of the stronger tracks on the album. It feels more fully thought out. Again, it doesn't really jump out at you but there is some beauty in the subtlety. Ends with passionate pleading, emotion that is very welcome and sadly missing from much of the rest of the album. Get On The Boat - Fun and funky with some nice solos in there. A very weak hook though, and verses almost identical in rhythmic delivery to 'Pretty Man'. The backbone to the song is chugging and funky though and the overall effect is a nice groove. Could've been a little grittier, but the playing is pretty tight. Not bad. So, hardly the most positive review on here. In fact, I've not been exclusively positive about a single track on the album. The problem for me is that while it's quite consistent and I wouldn't have a problem with putting the disc in and letting it play all the way through, there's nothing really great on here. A few nice tracks, some cool music, a handful of good ideas, some wasted opportunities, some pretty weak songwriting, some questionable choices of instrumentation and production, and an overall pleasantness that ends up disappointing more than enthusing due to the man's obvious talent and our expectations of what should be capable of. 2.5/3 out of 5. I'm afraid you seem to be pretty close to right on the money here. I think 3121 is the best track. Reminds me of the old days and promised something a little more experimental than we ended up getting. I thought this track came right out of the SOTT/LS/BA era. I wish he had continued down this path with the rest of the album. Where is the funk? Where is the guitar? Where is the Prince we get live. Funny how he is heavy into the electronic thing after all that musicology crap about real musicians, real music, blah blah blah. I'm growing tired of waiting. This album is better than many but it is no "return to form". "What a lovely fat beat with a zompige baslijn"

You don't have to love it just because it's a new Prince album. It isn't horrible it just isn't great. And I know he is older but you have artists like Van Morrison, Neil Young, Neil Diamond making some of the best music of their careers now. He just isn't playing to his potential from what we have seen live. He's a shitty producer. I still love him and I want so bad to be proven wrong with every new album. Why can't he make a great album of drop dead funk like Pretty Man? He would slay the naysayers. This chasing pop radio thing he has been trying is selling himself and his fans short. Let me paraphrase my earlier posts in case someone didn't get the point: I think all of the songs on "3121" are quite good. Well-written and quite easily-flowing. But at least for me this is the type of music in general that I generally wouldn't find of any interest. Had this not been a Prince album I wouldn't have even probably listened all through it from the first song to the last. There is some edge sure, but there is some edge also to be found on many of today's mainstream Pop/R&B musicians' records. And those sure as hell I don't want to spend my money on. Hmmmm..
It's all about 3121, Love, Satisfied, The Word, The Dance, , and Get on The Boat. As others have said... I think "Black Sweat" and "Te Amo Corozon" fit well, and I appreciate them fully within context. Plus... "Black Sweat" has that 'Black Album' era Linn drum programming... "Love" is the BOMB. Really truly loved "The Word". I think "Fury" will grow more on me. Everything is relative, and we're all "tainted" by the fury of the SNL performance of "Fury". I do wish the guitar was a little more over the top on the studio version, but I dig it still. Of course I'm buyin' it, 'cause I would anyway, 'cause I dig the album, and 'cause I need the better quality. Peace. G. This thread should be removed now, because all of the reviews, opinions, etc from before R gone, due 2 the Drama that a few felt necessary. He has his bid for the mainstream, and then slips away for awhile to rethink things and tend to his hardcore fanbase. I don't think it's been intentional, but that's just the way it's gone. For every Emancipation that's meant to be enormous and the most important release of his career, you get 5 projects out of the glaring spotlight like The Truth, The War, Crystal Ball, whatever. Even more so after Rave. We're just in an unusual phase where his bids for the mainstream are actually taking hold and getting him somewhere not only critically, but commercially. I'm fine with that. I know we'll get another C-Note and another Rainbow Children someday. I'm just happy to go with the flow and see what happens. I'm not gonna fall in love with everything, but I'm also not ready to throw in the towel every time something doesn't line up exactly with my expectations. That's the key. I'm just happy that it sounds like Prince is having fun again and combining the things that made him interesting in the first place.

Im really pee'd off with this album, because i know there is gonna be a huge hype, radio's will be playing the singles, and maybe some TV footage, but I think this album sucks, and its gonna be embarrassing for me as a Prince fan.
Their are 4 songs i really dig : 3121, love, the word and get on the boat, but the album its self is really crap, starts with some nice funk, then turns into like Jlo's or ushers album, then back into some lovely funk at the end... Just sounds like prince is only here to make money, because he has totally forgot how to make tracks like he used to...and Im not asking for another purple rain, im asking for some good music. He has soo much talent but he just throwing it all alway.. For the few months this album is out, Im pretending i've never heard of him Just wish this was as good as musicology, because at the mojo it dont even touch it. Keenmeister

I still think if we got an album of what we saw on SNL or many other live preformances lately he would get us and them. Prince really is like a musical Rorschach Test. I think that is why I love him so much. We all get something totally different out of each song and we each, subsequently have very different expectations. That is what makes it so much fun coming here and chatting about the man. "What a lovely fat beat with a zompige baslijn"

After spending an evening with this album at a friend's who had a copy, I have to say, there's really nothing on this record that's worthy of Prince's best or even a recent highlight.
3121 -- The highlight and it goes downhill quick. But even this song isnt' anything Prince hasn't done before and better. It has a monotonous tempo, no time changes but it's saving grace is that it has some Prince trademarks such as the sped up (aka P-Funk) voices and some fun, throw away lyrics. As I said before, it would have made a good OUTTAKE from the Camille era. Lolita -- Nothing here to sink your teeth into, not even a snack. A pop sound with incredibly corny lyrics. No wit or naughty charm, just embarassing cliches. TAC -- It now, sadly, makes sense as to why this was picked as an early 'single.' It's one of the strongest tracks on the record. Prince does easy listening and he does it right. Black Sweat -- Like TAC, suddenly becomes a stronger song in the context of this album. Incense and Candles -- If you thought he was a follower of hip-hip in the 90's, wait until you listen to him chase Britney Spears and Cher's musical ideas. I imagine some forty year old woman who likes ponies and Jeff Foxworthy and boxwine will find this song 'romantic' and 'sweet.' Love -- MTV urban beats and synth. Funky but nothing more than a glorified throwaway. "Bounce!" Satisified -- Anything but. Fury -- See above. While Endorphinemachine may have lost something on record, it's still a great rock song with a great vocal performance by Prince and a driving guitar. This track is incredibly weak pop albeit with great Prince treble picking. The Word -- Arguably the best track on the album but if you wondered if he was still a JW or getting saucy with "Black Sweat," consider this his wink to Larry letting him know he's still one of the chosen. Preach it, P.! Let's hope the "Get Saved (Miami Mix)" finds it way onto a future CD single release. BLB - More preaching to a well constructed r/b song. A nice musical break down at the end, good and funky. The Dance -- This song truly left no impression on me. Get On The Boat -- Please, sail without me. Okay, I'm having some fun above, but really, I can't believe Prince made this record. I don't think major reviews will be kind to it or find it anything than average at best. I don't know if he's coasting, but he certainly needs to stop trying to make pop records and do his own thing. While I wasn't crazy about the religious overtones of TRC and One Night Alone, Live, he was doing what he really felt and it came across in the production of that era, by far the most exciting musically of Prince's post Gold career. Ultimately, if you like Musicology and Rave or like everything Prince has done, you'll enjoy this record. If you think the aforementioned studio albums have been lacking, it's going to be hit and miss, emphasis on the miss. No hard feelings.

I was really looking forward to this CD, but overall I was very dissapointed.
Both his lyrics, and more sadly his music, has become VERY bland, uninspired and forgettable. I wonder if he still knows what it takes to write a well-crafted song...if he does, he hasn't demonstrated it for a while now. 3121 - Bland droning music. The melody, the bassline, never changes. No progressions. Lolita - Horrible mix!! Those synths are in front far too much. Again, pretty boring songwriting. Uninspired Te Amo - Smooth Jazz with vocals Black Sweat - Unimaginative lyrics, unimaginative music. At least before when he did funk vamps they were good grooves. Incense and Candles - midtempo contemporary r&b track. Not terrible, but not memorable Love - What happened to his synth programming skills? If he's gonna use synths, he should at least try to use good sounds on them. Again, unimaginative and not memorable musically Satisfied - Finally, something I can sink my teeth into. Not the most original, but not a bad imitation of a Ray Charles ballad. Fury - Please Prince, when you use guitars, don't double them with synths...they loose all their "fury"! Not a bad song, though The Word - When you can play the melody of a song with three notes.....I don't know. Kind of boring again. Beautiful, Loved and Blessed - Not a bad pop song...not great, but not bad. The Dance - Mid tempo....not very memorable. Get On The Boat - The Sacrafice Of Victor II .... not bad for what it is. Overall, dissapointing. Come on Prince....you *know* how to write well crafted songs...why have you not done it lately? It wouldn't be so frustrating if we didn't all know that he had it in him at one time. Oh well. Oh, and not that it matters to me (Lovesexy was FAR from a hit, but still brilliant!), but anybody predicting this album will be a 'hit' I think will be sorely dissapointed as well.
