Honest opinion here:
Its the best overall Prince album since Sign of the Times. Gives me a similar feeling as when I first heard that one. Not saying its on the same level as SOTT, but it has a similar vibe to it. And I'm happy as I never thought he'd ever get back to doing pop. Full disclosure...I'm an old Prince fan who loved everything he did up through SOTT. From that point on, it has been hit and miss with him for me, mostly miss (although there have always been a few great songs on every album). So, I don't know if that means I'm not enough of a fan...maybe I'm a casual fan, but damn, I've been following him since 1982, have all the major releases, so that's pretty long term casual. I think there are a whole bunch of old-timers in my situation, so to all of you...its time to get back on the boat. The girl must be a witch

Am I the only one that does not like 3121
I was hoping for more - i dig the lyrics and the experimental nature of it but the sounds and Camillie type voice make me cringe... Good news is its the only track on this phenom CD that I dont like - everything else including Satisfied (a real grower) is some of the most fun I've heard in Prince music in a while Very interested to hear what the critics have to say... The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Whatever reviews 3121 gets, I can't trust the Rolling Stone one.
They gave Musicology four stars. Four stars! Come on, it's a decent album, but it in no way deserves the same rating they gave Purple Rain. [Edited 3/14/06 8:44am] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

HAHAHAHAHA! Totally. I don't understand it. How does somebody go from writing songs like "Lady Cab Driver","Let's Pretend We're Married", When Doves Cry, and Sign O' The Times to writing shit like "My Name is Prince" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in The World"???? Please, I mean it would pretty hard to make Purple Rain look like shit, but you gotta wonder....? Who the fuck wrote, produced and arranged Purple Rain??? I thought it was Prince, but by the looks of his recordings since SOTT I have to think we are talking about two entirely different people. The only other explanation is that he had a 10 year deal with the devil and the contract ran out and he didn't renew. Jeeeesch!!!

I agree folks that have praised 3121 as an album that ranks amongst his best are riding the "hype wagon" as you say and may be in need of some clinical help (LOL)...But I also believe that saying 3121 is a good album (I myself give it a 3.5 out of 5 or a B+) does not mean you are not giving an "honest" review It's interesting to me that within all these reviews being posted on the Org no one wants to come to the obvious conclusion that maybe, just maybe, some of the dissapointment over this album may have more to do with hearing 3 tracks off an already short project (by Prince's standards) early on before the release of 3121; Add the fact that diehard Prince fans who wanted to hear some screaming guitar were spoiled with a rocking performance of "Fury." To me, this has a lot to do with the "I expected more" statements...If you take the album as is, there's no way you can say it's worst than Musicology and Rainbow Children...Just my opinion... 'Fury' reminds me of hearing 'Endorphin' live and then hearing the Gold studio track. Is there any Prince ablum worse than the two you mentioned except maybe New Power Soul? I'll take a good 'B' rated cd. 'Gold' had its highlights, with funk spots and ballads and oddities. ---------------------------------

3121 is an awesome album in my opinion. It's the first Prince album I've heard in a long time that I actually want to listen to all the way through. Sure, it has it's low points, but I think that it's fun! Everyone who wants better music, stop whining and listen to something else.

Respectfully speaking, people need to truly touch an instrument and know that it is not just the instrument playing (even being recorded) that really makes that song come through in the music but that the energy the person is feeling deep down into their bones and spirit that allows us to contemplate and arise out of a slumber of daily life to feel something good or bad about it that awakens our senses even for a split second to realise that potentially for that fracture and fragment within that moment there is a shot of energy running through your veins and mind to your spirit to make that opinion good or bad. With that being said, Prince Rogers Nelson has within this cd compiled songs that are being shared to simply "awaken your senses" out of what might be a better day for you to simply enjoy what he is sharing. They both hated it, and agreed Black Sweat was pretty much the only thing on it they liked (though they liked that a lot). It was hard to argue. The more I listen, the more I feel like it's his weakest since Rave, and only a little better. There's just something so absent sounding in this album. We put on One Night Alone and they were both like, what the hell is this, this is great!
What's interesting (kinda lol) is that the overwhelming majority of people either really love practically all the songs on the CD, or hate pretty much every song on the CD...and the ones who love the CD and play it for their friends always report back that their friends dig it, too..and the ones who hate the CD and play it for their friends always report back that their friends hate it, too... I'm waiting for the one Orger who hates the CD yet reports back that they played it for their friend and they all loved it...lol (or vise versa) Prince is an artist that unfamiliar listeners do not love out of the box. Especially his best stuff. His songs seem strange at first listen compared to all the other pablum that people are used to listening to. The brilliance of Prince requires a committment of repeated listens and always has. I can remember seeing Purple Rain for the first time and hating the music so much I almost walked out. My senses were just assaulted with something very different and the original response was negative.

In Love...at about 4:37 there'a a drum fill that sounds as if it was lifted off of Uncle Sam...anyone else hear that....also...the phrasing in Love"love is like the sky U know..it never stops" sounds similar in style to The Glamorous life...the "love is heaven sent...it's glamorous" part.
Lolit, Love, The Word, Satisfied(short and sweet),3121, and the end of the Dace are my faves....Fury is an unfortunate letdown...wish I hadn't heard the track live first... It has a lot of potential.

another thing I've found about Price's albums...most of them atleast. Most of the other records out on the market have a vibe to them...a vibe that goes through the whole album and dulls it down...same sound from beggining to end...like all the songs are twins with dfferent clothes on. Prince albums are usually not like that. Most trax are starkly different than the one before it. It makes it hard for people to sit down and listen to. They're hard to listen to in social setting(game of dominoes, cards or whatnot, just kickin it).

I agree. Most of my friends don't like prince records, because they feel they are..stressful.
But they like some of the album tracks. Btw, this is one of the reasons, why prince won't ever be "on top" of the charts again. Even if people like one or two tracks of the album, they hear the whole album and believe: "jesus, i can't stand this weird synth sound...it makes me nervous" Plus, a lot of people don't idntify with him, cause he's a strange guy..

OK, i caved in and downloaded it. Having read all the spoilers Ive had to revise some of my expectations. People should not be saying things like Camille because that gets a poor soul like me salivating at the mouth for that funky sound. I wasn't expecting another Black album, he could never match that one, but I had to get over that expectation.
3121 is cool. Nice groove, some weird touches, nice vocals (Not Camille though), a cool album opener. Would like it to have gone off a bit more, but our man is a little more conservative now than he was in '86. Lolita is not half as bad as some have made out. The synth riff is not that dated, although the solo later on is out of 1978 no question. Not the pure pop i was expecting, and the chorus is a bit....clunky.., but this makes a really cool song. The Time references are a little too obvious, and as with 3121, had this been the 80's, he'd probably been brave enough to keep this groove going for a good 7 mins. I like it though. Te Amo Corazon. Grown on me considerably. A classy song, if not a little bland. Black Sweat. Prince gets his funk on again, but that horrible synth is sinister and overpowering. Some funk guitar is needed to drive it on a bit more, and yet again its too short. I love the New World beats though. Incense and Candles sent me to sleep, but is memorable for his first use of the vocoder. I dont hate this tool as much as others so i found this quite nice, but the songs aint up to scratch. Love is great. At first i thought it was going to venture into ill advised areas (remember Loose anyone....yuk), but then the lovely chorus hits and all those bad memories are gone. Satisfied is definitely On The Couch pt II, but not as good IMO. Doesnt have the same climax that that had. Is pretty much 100% faithful to the live version performed last year, would have like to see a bit more pushing of the arrangement. I think he pissed this one out one morning. Fury.....brilliant.....but lack of guitars kill it. It sounds li,e Cinamon Gilr part II without him ripping his guitar up. His vocals are ok, but i think its the one song that really needed Tamars vocals on. She adds so much to the live version. Its still a highlight of the album, and it follows a long tradition of prince guitar tracks never sounding as good on record: Bambi, The Cross, Dolphin, Endorphinmachine, all sound better live. I think the only song that has escaped this trend is Peach which I love the studio take of. The Word is deceptive. Starts off with such a dull beat, but then the acoustic guitar hits in, and the song begins proper. This is a highlight of the album without question. Very cool delivery from the man, and it grooves along nicely. Beautiful Loved & Blessed. Could probably have done without this. Its a Tamar song really, and it sounds like it should be. Nu-Soul isnt princes strength, although I do like stuff like U Make My Sunshine, and this is as pleasant, but it doesnt grab me. He probably put it in to tie the two releases together. If only he'd had the sense to do that with A Love Bizare in 1985. The Dance. I was anticipating this because I have the Chocolate invasion version, which I like, but people ahve talked this up, and while its much better production (the original sounds like an Emancipation outtake), its missing a keyboard riff that i really liked. Im sure itll grow on me, and i do quite like the screaming at the end, but i wouldnt exactly call this a highlight. Get on The Boat is great. A souped up Pretty Man, and a band sound sadly lacking form much of the album. Nice way to close the album. I think i like anything he does with Maceo on solo, so this one cant lose. Overall its definitely Musicology part II. While i feel the slow songs on that were better (On The Couch, Call My Name, & Reflection), I think he nails down the grooves much better on this record. Its a good record, more consistent than its predecessor, but its not going to blow the airwaves away. I love the Rainbow Children so im not going to say its the best album since this or that, but its certainly his most focused effort at a pop album since the Gold Experience. My main hope is that he explores the songs more in concert. Musicology was ignored on his last tour, but these songs have a lot of potential to sound amazing live, and i hope he does it justice. We want a proper 3121 tour, No more greatest hits shows.

Fauxie said: Not that we need one, but here's my review all the same:
3121 - Feels more like a groove, an intro, than a full-fledged song. Has a little head-bobbing effect and a bit of idiosyncracy about it (quirky guitar, voices), which sets it apart from some of the other tracks. Had potential for being something a little better, but all in all it's alright. Could've done without those synth horns. Doesn't quite satisfy. Lolita - Goes straight in with a keyboard riff that reminds me of 'IWBYL', but the actual keyboard sound could've been better. It's straight up fun pop, kinda catchy but ultimately not my thing. A little too fluffy and Emancipation-eque. Wouldn't have made my 1 disc CDR of that 3 disc album. Te Amo Corazon - Sweet track, beautiful production and instrumentation, but doesn't conjure up any more exciting adjectives than 'nice' or 'pleasant'. I wouldn't skip it, I'd enjoy it, but it could pass me right by if I weren't sitting there specifically to listen to it. Black Sweat - Sparse, electronic funk track that is too short and for me never really hits stride. Another that doesn't quite satisfy. Some funky rhythm guitar would've improved it in IMHO, but even with that addition wouldn't feel like a good song. Incense and Candles - Sexy, without a doubt, with some nice touches, but again just not that good a song. Production is good, some nice sounds and a smoothness to it that in this case I don't think detracts, but in conclusion only an average track. Love - A kinda funky track which combines electronic elements with some nice rhythm guitar licks. The hook is nice, but the verses are pretty poor. The ending is where the track gets funkiest the more the guitar is prominent. Satisfied - As many have said, very similar to 'On The Couch' but lacking something interesting like the vocal horns on the aforementioned track. Nice instrumentation, pleasing loose feel to the structure and playing, but passes by without really registering. Pleasant enough, but hardly taxing for ol' boy. He could write 3 of these a day and I'm beginning to think perhaps he does. Fury - As suspected, and often feared, disappoints compared to the SNL performance. Sounds pretty soft, keyboards too prominent, guitar not prominent enough, vocals just so-so and a little quiet in the mix. Even the scream towards the end has a perfunctory feel about it. A cool song that I do quite like, but having seen the SNL performance it's hard not to feel a little disappointed. Knew it was coming though, unfortunately. The Word - Acoustic guitar is a nice touch and there's quite a nice feel about this track. Lyrics aren't the best, but it's not a big issue. An enjoyable track without being that catchy or interesting. The usual nice touches here and there, some cool guitar work and a good vibe about it, but certainly not a great song. Beautiful, Loved and Blessed - A decent pop Rnb track, some nice vocals from both Tamar and Prince. Good structure and quite catchy and a funky coda at the conclusion. All in all quite a well put together track with decent instrumentation. Quite good, will probably work well on Tamar's album. Doesn't break any molds but is a pleasant listen. The Dance - Greatly improves on the other version. Has a nice mood about it and some subtly emotive singing. Piano work is good and fits well. I think this is one of the stronger tracks on the album. It feels more fully thought out. Again, it doesn't really jump out at you but there is some beauty in the subtlety. Ends with passionate pleading, emotion that is very welcome and sadly missing from much of the rest of the album. Get On The Boat - Fun and funky with some nice solos in there. A very weak hook though, and verses almost identical in rhythmic delivery to 'Pretty Man'. The backbone to the song is chugging and funky though and the overall effect is a nice groove. Could've been a little grittier, but the playing is pretty tight. Not bad. So, hardly the most positive review on here. In fact, I've not been exclusively positive about a single track on the album. The problem for me is that while it's quite consistent and I wouldn't have a problem with putting the disc in and letting it play all the way through, there's nothing really great on here. A few nice tracks, some cool music, a handful of good ideas, some wasted opportunities, some pretty weak songwriting, some questionable choices of instrumentation and production, and an overall pleasantness that ends up disappointing more than enthusing due to the man's obvious talent and our expectations of what should be capable of. 2.5/3 out of 5. kbb

I think you will enjoy this story. I went to Best Buy to get the Ultimate Prince release today....they were out...and I was told that all Best Buys are sold out. I don't know if I believe that. The more intersting part is this: when I asked if they had it the guy said sure and took me to a new section where they had 3121 out....but, no Ultimate Prince. i think 3121 is a very consistant album and i liked every track on it. i imagine that i will like it even more after a few listens. satisfied, fury, and 3121 were my favorite tracks after the first listen. i agree with the satisfied sounding like on the couch comment, but nothing wrong with that, on the couch is a great song.
i love the rawness of 3121 and its fun to hear camille again. fury's guitar tracks are too low in the mix, but like many prince songs, i like the live version better, but i do like both tracks.

Apparently there's a review of 3121 in Friday's Guardian and it has already been posted on their website:http://arts.guardian.co.u...18,00.html
The review is very positive, at least about the first 8 tracks.... the rest of the album is according to the review "a hail of dribbly mid-tempo R&B and central-casting James Brown pastiches, and the lyrics take a sudden detour to Kingdom Hall". ehm..... OK?

The lyrics are vague enough though that they can be applied to any religious belief. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I don't recall them off hand, but I thought the religious message was pretty obvious. Maybe they can be applied to any religion, though the "Let's get saved," part is certainly more central to some religions than others, but knowing Prince is a JW, I don't think it's a stretch to say he takes you to the Kingdom Hall at the end of the record. I'd wager if you asked him the meaning of those songs he wouldn't say "All religions and understanding are one." No hard feelings.

The lyrics are direct in their spirituality, but there's nothing in them that's direct JW dogma. No talk of any theocratic order, Armageddon, etc. And come on, all religions believe that finding God means being saved. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Maybe they can be applied to any religion, though the "Let's get saved," part is certainly more central to some religions than others, but knowing Prince is a JW, I don't think it's a stretch to say he takes you to the Kingdom Hall at the end of the record. I'd wager if you asked him the meaning of those songs he wouldn't say "All religions and understanding are one." The lyrics are direct in their spirituality, but there's nothing in them that's direct JW dogma. No talk of any theocratic order, Armageddon, etc. And come on, all religions believe that finding God means being saved. Well, if you think they are just a universal message, that's your own interpreation and as valid as any, but I'll still hold that Prince is preaching a JW message, being that he is, a JW. No hard feelings.
