Fauxie said: Payt said: Nice review.. the album did have a more positive effect on me though. My main concern was with incense and candles, which sounds like an attempt to sound 'current', and which actually succeeds in doing so, and in doing so kinda feels like a cop-out. My general feeling is that there are some real growers on this album though.. love being a good example. I've already esteemed 'the dance' as an instant classic.. i really think it;s that good.. another grower for other people perhaps. You're right abut fury.. we're too spoiled with the SNL version, which makes the album version pale in comparison. As for the rest of the tunes, i think BLAB and BS are the weakest tracks, and i really do enjoy al the others quite a lot already That's the thing. I may have come across as pretty much disliking almost all of the album, but for me many of the songs have some nice qualities without really hitting the mark. As a whole I don't think the album is bad, but when I look at each track individually I find it hard to be inspired to write glowing praise. I wanted to point out the qualities but still view the tracks in light of Prince's best work and judge them accordingly. I feel similarly to you in that I think 'Love' and 'The Dance' are strong tracks on this album. Oh, and thanks again. Good review, Fauxie. I actually was a little more excited about the potential success of this album than you obviously are. But you made some very intelligent critiques on the album that I hadn't considered. I'll let father time increase my intelligence on the album as it grows on me. P.S. I think critiques should be banned until a month has passed on the release of an album. I can't tell you how many times I've heard critics bash an album only to lighten up on their negativities 4 weeks later. Greg

Do you always follow our posts??... No, but I noticed when I dared to speak against 3121 that I was debating virtually the same person, but it turned out to be two people and not one and now just noticed whenever one posts the other is soon to follow. Good to have friends, though. No hard feelings.

Well Wall, I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that you continuously quote our posts to remind us that you think 3121 sucks. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I tend to not agree with that, save for my calling out whichever of you two called 'Love' already a classic Prince song and the debate that followed. Can't say I've even noticed you two outside of that until everywhere I looked I saw you two posted in pairs. But like I said, good to have friends, helps reinforce our 'points' don't it? I tell you what. This album aint as bad as I thought it was gonna be after reading all the reviews on here. Im quite impressed with it barring two songs which I could do without.
However, I cant help but feel that what we are listening to isn’t actually the finished product. Some of the tracks sound a bit demo-ish. The vocals in places sound a bit “untreated” and not up to scratch and musically I thought some of the songs were unfinished with snares sounding too dull or synths too high in the mix etc etc… I dunno, maybe that’s just the way its supposed to be. But maybe this is just the listening party demo and there are final versions on the official release. I also think that some of the lyrics are extremely poor. Im not knocking the content of any of the songs or what Prince is singing about, but some of the lyrics structurally are terrible. Stringing single syllables over four bars for example where another word could have done a much better job. I cant stand the lyric “from her head down to her pumps”! Piss poor lyrics just to rhyme with “bump bump bump”… which it doesn’t very well anyway… Lolita is a great tune. I love it. Not as cheesy as has been mentioned before. But lyrically it sounds juvenile. Prince, you certainly weren’t dead on it there! Best song by far is 3121. Absolutely digging that groove. Its different and technically something we haven’t heard from Prince before. It aint the camille voice by any means. The deeper voice actually sounds scratched and spun by a dj. I think the production of this tune is very different. Dig it totally. Does have a Beck, Guerro sound to the rhythm of it all… Really don’t like the voice on incense and candles. The song itself isn’t too bad. Very rnb which aint my thing but it does have a catchy tune and some good orchestra going on, especially towards the end. But the whole vocoder sound is really terrible. It changes the whole mood of the song to something that sounds old. It sounds like Prince is jumping on a bandwagon that has already passed. The song that follows, is it Love? Not too bothered about that one either. Its only salvation comes at the end where it gets a bit dirty-funkified. Other than that its just gloss. Rest of the songs are cool. A million times better than Musicology. No where near his best. But overall, the best thing Prince has done since he became Prince again I reckon. A good pop album that isn’t trying to be anything more… Touch wood there is still a surprise or two when we get the official release. Maybe some of those terrible lyrics are rejigged and maybe 3121 (the song) is double the length because it should be!

Fauxie said: Not that we need one, but here's my review all the same:
3121 - Feels more like a groove, an intro, than a full-fledged song. Has a little head-bobbing effect and a bit of idiosyncracy about it (quirky guitar, voices), which sets it apart from some of the other tracks. Had potential for being something a little better, but all in all it's alright. Could've done without those synth horns. Doesn't quite satisfy. Lolita - Goes straight in with a keyboard riff that reminds me of 'IWBYL', but the actual keyboard sound could've been better. It's straight up fun pop, kinda catchy but ultimately not my thing. A little too fluffy and Emancipation-eque. Wouldn't have made my 1 disc CDR of that 3 disc album. Te Amo Corazon - Sweet track, beautiful production and instrumentation, but doesn't conjure up any more exciting adjectives than 'nice' or 'pleasant'. I wouldn't skip it, I'd enjoy it, but it could pass me right by if I weren't sitting there specifically to listen to it. Black Sweat - Sparse, electronic funk track that is too short and for me never really hits stride. Another that doesn't quite satisfy. Some funky rhythm guitar would've improved it in IMHO, but even with that addition wouldn't feel like a good song. Incense and Candles - Sexy, without a doubt, with some nice touches, but again just not that good a song. Production is good, some nice sounds and a smoothness to it that in this case I don't think detracts, but in conclusion only an average track. Love - A kinda funky track which combines electronic elements with some nice rhythm guitar licks. The hook is nice, but the verses are pretty poor. The ending is where the track gets funkiest the more the guitar is prominent. Satisfied - As many have said, very similar to 'On The Couch' but lacking something interesting like the vocal horns on the aforementioned track. Nice instrumentation, pleasing loose feel to the structure and playing, but passes by without really registering. Pleasant enough, but hardly taxing for ol' boy. He could write 3 of these a day and I'm beginning to think perhaps he does. Fury - As suspected, and often feared, disappoints compared to the SNL performance. Sounds pretty soft, keyboards too prominent, guitar not prominent enough, vocals just so-so and a little quiet in the mix. Even the scream towards the end has a perfunctory feel about it. A cool song that I do quite like, but having seen the SNL performance it's hard not to feel a little disappointed. Knew it was coming though, unfortunately. The Word - Acoustic guitar is a nice touch and there's quite a nice feel about this track. Lyrics aren't the best, but it's not a big issue. An enjoyable track without being that catchy or interesting. The usual nice touches here and there, some cool guitar work and a good vibe about it, but certainly not a great song. Beautiful, Loved and Blessed - A decent pop Rnb track, some nice vocals from both Tamar and Prince. Good structure and quite catchy and a funky coda at the conclusion. All in all quite a well put together track with decent instrumentation. Quite good, will probably work well on Tamar's album. Doesn't break any molds but is a pleasant listen. The Dance - Greatly improves on the other version. Has a nice mood about it and some subtly emotive singing. Piano work is good and fits well. I think this is one of the stronger tracks on the album. It feels more fully thought out. Again, it doesn't really jump out at you but there is some beauty in the subtlety. Ends with passionate pleading, emotion that is very welcome and sadly missing from much of the rest of the album. Get On The Boat - Fun and funky with some nice solos in there. A very weak hook though, and verses almost identical in rhythmic delivery to 'Pretty Man'. The backbone to the song is chugging and funky though and the overall effect is a nice groove. Could've been a little grittier, but the playing is pretty tight. Not bad. So, hardly the most positive review on here. In fact, I've not been exclusively positive about a single track on the album. The problem for me is that while it's quite consistent and I wouldn't have a problem with putting the disc in and letting it play all the way through, there's nothing really great on here. A few nice tracks, some cool music, a handful of good ideas, some wasted opportunities, some pretty weak songwriting, some questionable choices of instrumentation and production, and an overall pleasantness that ends up disappointing more than enthusing due to the man's obvious talent and our expectations of what should be capable of. 2.5/3 out of 5. nice 'honest' review. Seems to be like every cd released since Emancipation, a couple stand out tracks but nothing to write home about. Seems to be more of the hype wagon. Take the good tracks, leave the rest ---------------------------------

Take the good tracks, leave the rest I agree folks that have praised 3121 as an album that ranks amongst his best are riding the "hype wagon" as you say and may be in need of some clinical help (LOL)...But I also believe that saying 3121 is a good album (I myself give it a 3.5 out of 5 or a B+) does not mean you are not giving an "honest" review It's interesting to me that within all these reviews being posted on the Org no one wants to come to the obvious conclusion that maybe, just maybe, some of the dissapointment over this album may have more to do with hearing 3 tracks off an already short project (by Prince's standards) early on before the release of 3121; Add the fact that diehard Prince fans who wanted to hear some screaming guitar were spoiled with a rocking performance of "Fury." To me, this has a lot to do with the "I expected more" statements...If you take the album as is, there's no way you can say it's worst than Musicology and Rainbow Children...Just my opinion... Everyone simply needs 2 thank God and thank Prince 4 the song "3121". It doesn't need 2 compare 2 earlier "Camille stuff", 'cause this is now, and it exceeds even the greatness of the past... Every instrument, every detail, every voice... and the solo is straight outta and of some the greatest Lovesexy guitar. There can be no complaining on this, or on this album. "3121" is a pure Prince Funk masterpiece. Also check out the dark, low, windy swell sound that weaves in and out. This sound is straight outta the 1986-1988 sonic bucket. U all should be creaming over that alone... Again, this is new, fresh, and now...a perfect melding of the past and the present, with a futuristic guarantee of longevity.
"Love" is the BOMB. "The Word" (beautiful, with the breakdown at the end, and finishing with a primal scream) "Satisfied" (organic classic old school slow jam. comparable 2 some of the best) "The Dance" (2 beautiful). "Black Sweat" is infectious. I'm a sucker 4 a Black Album era Linn drumbeat, yeah, but the whole arrangement kicks, and it's length is perfect in context of the album. Speaking of which, the sequence of the tracks make each track make perfect sense. I already dug "Te Amo Corazon", but now I really dig it, again, with the context. U all should be elated at the synth sounds, background atmosheric sounds, etc. "Fury" shouldn't be compared 2 the live version... When listened 2 on it's own, it kicks. I dig the odd, distant sounding vocals. Don't tell anyone, but "Lolita" is growing on me... Thank U Prince. "He's a musician's musician..."

BIG BUMMER>>>>>
When I heard the initial reports about the new record "3121" I was super exited and thought that it sounded too good to be true. It seemed like there was hardly a bad thing said about "3121". The breakdown of each song from the listening parties seemed hopeful mind you there were a couple red flags, but for the most part it sounded like the world had a classic Prince record on it's hands that would define the 2006 pop culture scene. Then there was a calm. For a couple weeks not much was being said. The hype was stuck on "Black Sweat" Then there wasthe new video and much loved sound of the this new Prince song. By the sound of things, Prince just might up to his old tricks(good music). Then I started reading negative reviews that rang familiar to the same gripes people have had with him for the past 10 years. Thing like "You can see glimpses of his genius, but that's about it" really made me worry that the new record was hype and that Universal wouldn't be able to help the situation. So I broke down and started downloading stuff from Limewire.com. I couldn't believe what I heard. It's the same old lame unprogressive NPG sound that he's been sptting out for the past 10 years. The songs have a cheesy bad R&B quality. The synth is not even dated in a good way. It's like the bad kind of synth you would hear on songs like "The Nutron Dance" by the Pointer Sisters. Really bad. The lyrics are cheesy too. When is Prince going to wake up? He's not going to be able to pull the sucker punch marketing move he did with Musicology. The record won't sell. From a record buyers point of view. Trust me. It won't sell. It won't get much radio play. The music isn't up to par with today's sound. As far as "The Camille" sound. I'm in love with that sound and I didn't really pick up on that sound on this recored. Yes there is the sped up voice, but it doesn't have the mysterious dark quality to it. It's just a sped up voice. No Spooky Electric here. No Scarlet Pussy. No La, La, La, Hee, Hee, Hee. Maybe hearing the record in it's entirety will change my mind, but I doubt it. Prince has to prove himself to me at this point. He's let me down one too many times. It's a big bummer that he is so fogged up by the NPG. His sound I'm afraid is forever lost. I want PrInCe back.

People who haven't heard it yet need to hear it with their own ears and not vicariously through others as I've read on here with people saying I read the negative reviews and they were telling the truth or vice versa. I like The Word a lot too.
That line about spiders and webs is still some lame shit though. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

What I like about it is that he's just so happy about what he's found he just wants to share his view. The music totally matches his mood so that makes it even better. If there was ever a song in recent times where he was truely inspired, then it's this one. [Edited 3/13/06 14:56pm] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

That line about spiders and webs is still some lame shit though. It is kinda funny hearing him sing that but I understand where he's coming from. God knows I've been around some spiders in my life, I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

so were you expecting lyrics like:" your furry melting thing awaits me, and my six string.....".
this is the sound of a very happily married prince...(?) hell ain't got no fury.... "u know prince darling, you're spending far too much time in the studio, love" i think there is an utmost mastery of the chorus in this album: 'Love', 'the Word', 'Black Sweat', these are some of the most uplifting choruses i've heard in any song in a long while... Beautiful, Loved and Blessed is fantastic! Spiritually and maritally satisified.... i've had this album on repeat 4 the past 3 days! *Chris x

Fuck that, I want an album that makes Purple Rain look like shit. Goddamn, don't we all deserve that!! Prince has the skills, but not the heart. What the fuck does this guy think about when he is in the studio? Grrrr. All you others say Hell Yea!!

That's the funniest shit I've read all night! It will NEVER happen. Unless you're a glutton for punishment and I think you are, accept the truth or keep setting yourself up for disappointment at every Prince release. I think a lot of fans have had that over and over again. It just depends on what you like. I was never that fond of the PR album as a whole so it was not a high water mark for me.

I'm sorry but...we don't deserve anything! Prince doesn't have to record an album for his fans or for the general audience. The fact that you don't like 3121 is ok, but please don't think you deserve something...I think that it's Prince who could deserve respect from us for all he has recorded and shared with us during all these years! Skills and not the heart? Come on, didn't you listen to TRC, NEWS, Xpectations, One Nite Alone, C-Note etc...Perhaps these are not your taste but Heart is really there. The heart of u true musician. Peace P.S: and i didn't listen to 3121 so...

As someone who completely hated Musicology (the only P album I have never purchased) I was well worried about this one.
But I think its great! Favourites so far? 3121, the Dance, Get on the boat (much better than Prettyman!), te Amo…, Beautiful, Loved… Could do with less production and vocoder on Incense and Love is pretty dull. Perhaps they are the two that will grow on me last, or like many P songs throughout his career may not grow at all. But so what. 10 good songs out of 12 is pretty good going. I cant remember when I only had 2 songs to skip on a Prince album. The song 3121 is absolute brilliance. I would love to hear what other songs he made in the same ilk that probably got discarded… It may be too good to open the album as it gave me a taste of what I thought was to come – experimental and lofi sorta sound. It would have been a great opener to a concept album of strangeness and experimentation… Maybe next time. Anyway, like I said before – im still not entirely convinced we are listening to the final cut of the album. Maybe we are listening to a marketing tool. A deliberate leak for whatever reason. It has been leaked a little too easy for my liking and there has been no noise from Universal or Prince about it… Perhaps we have more in store come 21st…
