There's WAY too many good songs on GB for it to deserve the hate it often receives here.
To me, Batman was a big letdown, but GB was an excellent return to form.

// [Edited 3/5/06 14:47pm] except not everyone will agree with you that UTCM was a bad movie. I have a few friends who aren't big Prince fans who love that movie. Lots of less Princey people think it's really funny and the closest thing to a "film" Prince ever made. Don't sling it in the trash pile with the GB movie! I kinda deserved that..... When I called UTCM a bad movie, I was going along with the general accepted view - I myself love it. It is a poorly executed movie in *many* ways, but it comes out the other end an endearing piece of work, like one might might be endeared to La Toya Jackson's country and western album. Graffiti Bridge is a mess, but I can't help but like it too in my weaker moments.

I can listen to the songs individually, but it's really diificult to listen thru as an album. Incredibly innconsistent. This is how I feel.I can never listen to it all the way through. It just doesn't hold together as an album.A really great song ("Can't Stop This Feeling I Got",for example) will be followed by a crappy song (in this case, the bland "New Power Generation").The whole album is like that.

wasn't it his best rated album by rolling stones? like 5 out of 5 stars?

There are few great songs.
WE CAN FUNK - that´s one of the hottest tracks EVER! Especially the ending part after "we can blow the candle off, baby....ahhhhh" NEW POWER GENERATION - both versions JOY IN REPETITION QUESTION OF U and I also like THE LATEST FASHION "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

I cant understand how alot of people say they hate it when it includes songs like joy in repetition, the question of u and thieves in the temple! [Edited 3/6/06 9:52am] "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee

I only like half of this album. The Non-Prince songs suck. Most of Prince songs are classics. The only songs that I play are:
1.New Power Generation 2.The Question Of U 3.Elephants & Flowers 4.Round & Round 5. We Can Funk 6.Joy In Repetition 7.Thieves In The Temple 8.New Power Generation (pt II) The rest of the album I can do without.

I think what it was, was that this album is extremely patchy, had too many guest tracks on it and was disjointed. Diamonds mixed in amongst the dust.
Timing was bad too, as someone else suggested it did come out just as he had started to wane. Lovesexy and Batman were a definite slide downwards from the peak of Sign of the Times and the still deeply satisfying Black album. The tracks Cant Stop this feeling I got, Joy in Repetition, Still Would stand all time were amongst three of the best hes made and Release It and Shake are amongst the finest the Time has made, but the rest with the exception of Round and Round and Thieves in the Temple which are alright, the rest was scrappy misproduced filler. Never had an album been like this either all the songs were universally good (eg 1999, SOT) or less good(ATWIAD). Grafitti Bridge on the other hand was a start of the period of patchy albuums with songs ranging from best to the very worst (A good example is Emancipation Holy River versus Mr Happy). But to add to the timing, we had the ultra wack movie and I think to any hardcore Prince fan of the time (it was a year off for me), seeing the movie and hearing crap like New Power Generation, would have been a major let down. But it meant he had come of age. So to conclude, I lost this CD a few years ago and have not lamented it loss at all 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

Anx said: i agree. i LOATHE the title song and 'round and round' gets old fast, but there are songs on most prince albums i don't like, so that shouldn't detract. i've gotten a lot of enjoyment from GB over the years. it made me wish i could like the movie more.
You have to give his props- though- for the production work on Round & Round. This song was perfect for Tevin Campbell's voice... Elephants and Flowers is masterful. On Thieves In The Temple- I love the no bass, but extra kick drum
The Question Of You Joy In Repetition New Power Generation Come on guys, The Prince songs were good..... and it was a soundtrack, remember? The road you choose to walk in this life, is a road that leads to the next.....

Rolling Stone gave it 4 and a half stars for fucks sake! This is a great album and the last purely 80's sounding Prince album. Haters and warped eared ones can step into the shadows. All you others say Hell Yea!!

To me, Batman was a big letdown, but GB was an excellent return to form. Funny,I think 'Batman' is a masterpiece compared to 'Graffiti Bridge' I was still stuck on the Lovesexy vibe, I guess... and wanted more. GB came closer to that for me than Batman. "Can't Stop," "New Power Generation," "Question of U," "Elephants & Flowers," "Joy in Repetition," "Thieves in the Temple," and "Still Would Stand All Time." I also love "We Can Funk" and "Tick Tick Bang." [Edited 3/6/06 19:39pm]

Listening to Graffiti Bridge today, it dawned on me that this is not a bad album in any way, shape, or form. Infact, it has a pretty jaw-dropping amount of incredible gems. Can't Stop This Feeling I Got is a really fun rock opener, New Power Generation works well as a pop song with consistent energy, The Question Of U is hauntingly powerful and has an amazing guitar solo, Joy In Repetition is a poetic work of art with beautiful lyrics and a wonderfully somber guitar solo, Elephants and Flowers has a unique, uplifting sound and is full of life, We Can Funk is a fun funk song, Thieves in the Temple is an incredibly unique pop song with a great Middle Eastern sound and multi-layered vocals, and Still Would Stand All Time is an incredibly powerful ballad with a rousing climax. Yeah, there's some filler, but that doesn't make the album bad. It just makes it less than great. The non-Prince songs are pretty "blah", and Graffiti Bridge is pure corny shit, but how can you call this album bad when there are so many good-classic songs from it to put on your iPOD? The album itself also flows pretty well and has a cohesiveness to it that was missing from the film. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

On a side note, am I the only one who didn't like the way he splitted "We Can Funk" with "Joy In Repetition"?
I knew the original uncut version of "JIR" with the lone intro and I was expecting for it: but when I listened to the released "butchered" version I simply couldn't believe it! What was so wrong to fade "WCF" and to let "JIR" start from the beginning?
