I first heard this song when I was 16, and it was one of the first songs that I recall ever getting to me on an emotional level.
A lot of my reaction to the song is likely due to circumstances in my life at that time, but also I think Prince so successfully captured such an empty, sad quality to ALC -- he really gave it FEELING.

I also love this song...the lyrics sound so genuine and credible even though it´s just a ficitonal story.I love the lyrics, the music and the imagery he´s using, like her sister skating on the lake, the banana daiquiris, playing pokeno, swimming in her dad´s pool etc. etc.
Reminds me of youth, of my teenage years in a good way. I love this song, and I´m not even a Christian or into Christmas really. Great song. When a friend of mine recorded this on a tape for me, ages ago, he knew exactly that I´d like it, and he was right. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I heard this song around Christmas 1984 (Nimrod's birthday - long story), and what struck me more than anything was that this was just "out there" enough. I think since this was also written during the time of ATWIAD, it might actually signal the start of his psychedelic period. It's very "oozy", if that makes sense.

I just listened to this track about a week ago. First time since probably 1987 -88. I was surprised to find myself choking up while listening to it. It has this incredibly melancholy, depresessing quality to it, but it doesn't make you want to go out and slit your wrists. If anything, it gives you hope and courage.
I have no idea why/how that's possible, but there it is. Listening to it again after all this time it was like confirmation of that albatross of "genius" that Prince wears around his neck. I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

Same here. I remember spinning this on my record player. Those were the good 'ol days. • Did you first think Prince was gay? •
Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

It's so weird that I was listening closely to the songs lyrics yesterday, and wondering who Prince was writing about...the parents say pneumonia, her sister said strep....I wondering who the song is about. It's beautiful

the first time i heard it (sad but true) was in 1987. it was actually played on the radio one day and the dj was joking about it after it was over, and i thought it was a new prince single just for christmas, but as you guessed, i couldnt find it in any stores.
finally found it a few years later (found all the b-sides over a 5 year period and several hundred dollars only to have them released on the hits/the b-sides about 1 year later) noituloveR lautiripS weN a fo gninwaD eht si sihT
