i've always been quite partial to this one. i just love the way that prince is off to the side and out of focus. it looks more like a painting than a photograph to me.

I like that one too. It looks like there's a big ole party going on. It took me a while to figure out where P was though falloff

Its a toss up from 1980-87 albums. 1999 and PR are classic, but then again so are DM and Controversy..... too close to call.

No one has mentioned the obvoius winner

DIRTY MIND
Prince in his punkfunk finery, black and white against some bed springs and the "Rude Boy" Badge, it was beyond clever, simple yet blunt. Also the inside photos of the band with Andre and his unzipped jeans, Doctor fink with the mask on his face, and the other photo of Prince doing something on the bed with the track titles sprayed on the wall.
Those early covers had essence, 2nd are Controversy and Prince, then For You
1999 and The Rainbow children were horrendous and the worst, Haitian Zombie art I ask you. Emancipation and The Vault are 90s Printshop technology gone wrong, death to airbrushing!!!!
Musicology is not too bad

Too difficult to choose an absolute best! But i really like the covers for NPS, sign 'O' the times, C-note and the vault.
[Edited 3/6/06 10:03am]

Not only is NPS the WORST Prince cover, it might qualify among the worst covers by ANYONE, ever.

Best Prince cover is Sign O The Times.

The best Prince albums covers? easily, the ones from his artistic 'golden age'... 1985 - 1988...

The Best...Sign of the Times.....perfectly reflecting the eclectism of the songmaterial, and the chaotic times around 1987

Second best... Parade, a narcistic record, that isnt egoistic, but playfull... Prince doing the 'vogue' on the sleeve in black and white.. this might even be a nihilistic record (one russian reviewer called it that), but it perfectly captures that postmodern times (everything is relative...)

Third... Around the world in a day, again, some postmodern sleeve, Princes take on the utopians of the sixties, still not clear wether it was meant serious, or ironic....indeed, postmodern

Last...Lovesexy..Prince made it clear to us....this is what i am, a music-addict, combining rock-soul-psychedelica-funk-and-hip-hop on a record that is like a cubistic painting - but, hey the guy is naked, too much for (fake) puritan americans - europeans laugh about it.... wink
