Why do people here dump on Musicology?

I am sitting here listening to the CD...and I really dig it. There is not a song on here I don't like. I see on here all the time people saying how if 3121 is like this they'll hate all over it. I don't get it...this is a great Prince album. I know its not "experimental" (whatever the hell that means), but its a fun, funky, nice flowing, album. I just want to know why people here don't like it.

I never got it either. I like musicology, most of my friends who are non fans like musicology. Every song is good. Maybe not GREAT but there are a few great songs. A Million DAys, Call my name to just name 2. It's a perfectly good album, and listenable form start to finish

I don't think it's that bad either! Though it took just some months and then I didn't really listen to it anymore, so I guess there is something...boring...about it. But I don't think it's really bad.

I've loved it since day one. It's a great pop album, and I think time will be kind to it. Even the weaker songs like Life of the Party and Cinammon Girl only sound weak in comparison to the other stuff. And that little jazz break down on Man in Your Life gets me every time.

Every album gets slated on here.
The only albums immune seem to be Purple Rain and Sign"O" the times.
So i wouldn't worry about it. Just like what you like. If i had to defend all the albums or songs I like that get slated on here, I wouldn't have time to eat.

If purple rain was released now, prince"fans" would most probably slate the "boring" title track and bemoan the backwards talking stuff. If SOTT were released today, what do you think people would say about Starfish and Coffee?

Me, I love them all.

I love Musicology and had it on heavy rotation for months after I first bought it.I love the fact that it has a few different musical styles on it and I love to hear the live versions of these tracks. Also,Musicology properly introduced me to Renato.
Time is a trick....

I for one was disappointed. After I heard the title track, my presumption was that Prince was going to explore all kinds of styles of music. Nope -- the dryest, most sterile album I ever heard. It only tops New Power Soul. Prince getting old really sucks ass . . . . no more Pheromone, Tambourine, Temptation, Joy In Repetition, Crucial etc. etc. No more urging, horniness, yearning, lust, guilt . . . none. Just a spoiled old fart resting on his laurels and through with taking risks.

I actually enjoy NEWS better than Musicology.

His Vegas horn fills signals just what I fear . . . how long will it be before he becomes a Vegas act?

hihi
you must be kidding, he still is the hardest working man in showbusiness... Prince fans are spoiled, i mean, how many discs should a Prince best of cd have?
About 5? Nuff said
He did his thing and he keeps doin it, i still dig his new stuff... He he would make music 'the people' wanted 2 hear he never would've made all those 80's classics neither... Then he would've jumped on the bandwagon of whatever what was hot that era

The problem is, i think, many rock orientated fans just don't feel the funk n soul in the music... How can u hate on The Work, Prettyman, On The Couch, Musicology, Dear Mr. Man, The One, etc etc all wich are recent bomb ass tracks...

And guess what this man is getting older and had its share of problems too, I guess... Hard 2 believe sometimes but he IS human after all! biggrin

I hear ya...but see thats what I like about Prince fans...we are as different from each other as he is with his albums. I have been a fan since 1983 when I 1st heard Little Red Corvette and have had my ups and downs with his stuff too. To me? his dryest most steril period has to be 1991-1994. Stuff like My Name is Prince, The Flow, Jughead, and the whole Tony M thing was the most steril, forced, and boring stuff he has done in his entire career. There are some good songs during this period but this wasn't the Prince I grew to love in the 80s. I even like New Power Soul and Rave 10 times more than that stuff. But now I am hearing the energy, and JOY that he had back then...but it still sounds NEW. Musicology is FUN imo, and even though he is not on the cutting edge like he was back then, it has that energy that was missing for awhile. Again, tho, to each their own.

It must be said that fans like me who grew up on that early 90's Prince still dig and understand that. I loved it back then and still do, i also love his (pre)80's stuff a lot but not all ('For U', 'Lovesexy', 'Batman' and 'Around The World', 'Controversy' 2 me are no better as 'NPS' or 'Rave' or 'Come')

My point is: he always had his ups n downs, and I like 2 see all his stuff as a 'body of work' razz

The only song I can´t stand on that album is On The Couch, which is simply , IMO, one of his most boring songs ever.

Musicology, the title track, is also a song I always skip because the music is boring and the lyrics are corny and make me cringe.

Life Of The Party gets a lot of criticism here, which is justified, but it´s still much better than the two songs I mentioned above.

A Million Days, Cinnamon Girl, Reflection, If I Was The Man In Your Life and What Do You Want Me To Do are nice songs, albeit the lyrics are not always something everybody can relate to...some of his old stuff like Beautiful Ones, Adore, Insatiable and If I Was Your Girlfriend were also higly personal lyricwise, but the Average Joe could still relate to them, which is not that easy with cryptic lyrics such as in If I Was The Man In Your Life...good music , nevertheless.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Musicology marked Prince's Return to the Popculutre Album Machine. He was again getting help from outside NPG camp to suport his album. Prince went a little generic "safe" with the Musicology cd. That is why. Many long time listeners felt Prince neglected their suport in turn of an attempt to get more record sales and listeners.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

Very consistent and average Prince album. Not too many highs or lows. It is Prince on psych meds. What's missing is a little (alot) of the beautiful Prince weirdness and ability to pervert the musical landscape.

I do love "On The Couch" though. Classic P arrangement and vocals. A blues standard that utilizes space and tension. It somehow manages to come across erotic without obvious sex references.

Dude, your tail will be right in the front of the line when he hits Caesars Palace so stop playing.

Musicology was a very good album. Was it one of his best: No but he had a goal with this CD, to remind people that he was still around and he succeeded. He was coming back to the mainstream and I firmly believe that he couldn't be super wild because he wanted the old fans back and they would noot have been ready for a song like Black Sweat in 2004. I played the CD for a few people (non-fans) and they liked it. It was the right CD for the right time. Besides, Musicology, Call My Name and A Million Days definitely deserve to be remembered as great Prince songs.

To sum it all up, Musicology was for the non fans but 3121 will be for us.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I like Musicology a lot myself. Sometimes fans just like to live in the past because it reminds them of things they did when younger. I'm also a Radiohead fan and hear a lot of people that only like their first 2 CD's and hate a lot of their "newer" stuff. Which is crazy because it's still the same artists just taking a different direction.

Some people literally want their artists to sound very similiar every song and CD they put out. Like Aerosmith did 85' to 97'.

I don't think Musicology is a 'return to form', as they say, but all in all it's a way better effort than eg Rave Un2...

Musicology, along with TRC, marks Prince's return to him being himself, with some nice grooves (Dear Mr Man) and a nice collection of songs.

Some are going to criticize me for this, but the only song I tend to skip is Call My Name. I like the 3rd verse and the bridge, but the instrumentation is nothing spectactular and the chorus is ear-cringing!

Musicology is pretty nice CD for the general public.
3121 looks like it will be Musicology pt 2.
Maybe when Prince converts to Islam or some other new gimmick, he will make some real music like TRC, or unless he has to wait for the next Dangelo album to come out, so he can stop pulling stuff out of his vault.
