Your honest thoughts on the 0(+> So what do ya'll think of the
No, I dont mean the 'separate persona' that people often assign to this design. & Prince are the same person. I mean what do you think of the design itself. Ive always thought it represents Prince & many of things about him quite well. Combination of the male & female symbols but also resembles the Cross. I always looked at it as man (male sign) + woman (female sign)=unified by music (the horn in the middle)
Or you could look at it as the unification of Prince's male and female side through his gift of music. The years were full of a lot of wasted time and energy but I love the symbol. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

is a great logo symbol. He shouldn't drop it. Now that everyone knows it, he doesn't have to use it as his name, but he should use as a merchandising logo. It works great on mugs and keychains. It works much better as a logo than the NPG design.
If you notice, when merchandise like pendants and coffee mugs of NPG and are for sale, the items will sell out long before the NPG ones will.

High,
Eye also used 2 make that design, well something very very very similar 2 this design at the end of my name and as my signature 4 drawings in the late 80's and early 90's. Eye actually never new what it meant and had never seen it b4. When Prince started 2 use it that really blew my mind! Liquid [This message was edited Wed Jul 10 16:54:37 PDT 2002 by Liquid]

I love the symbol, but the original one (without the horn) is my favorite. I don't know why . . maybe it's because it was around since the 1999 album? I don't know . . . but they're both cool!
I remember drawing a guitar based on the original symbol . . way before the guitar in 1994. It was the same - round body, cross section, and pointed head (just no horn part)!!!

I think it's a nice image. I bought the metal symbol key ring at the One Night Alone Concert. It's always with me.
But, beware! I was actually pulled out of line at the airport. They dug the key ring out of my purse and a big burly guy told me it was better to leave it at home while he tapped on the pointy end. He was holding the thing upside down as if he were about to gouge my eyes out! They actually considered it a dangerous weapon. It is a really heavy hunk of metal, but come on! My kids teased me the entire flight. ___________________________________________

I just thought it was the male and female signs like you said, and I found it very interesting when I read somewhere or I think read around here, that it meant something about him and Mayte, about him finding his soul mate, the union of male and female. Is that what you were talking about when you mentioned the male and female? Well, guess that's what I knew. It's still very intersting for someone to have this symbol as a 'name' though. I think it's cool. It hangs around my neck as a matter of fact. It's been fun watching it evolve over the years, and yes, it IS the combination of the male and female symbols. Asked about it once in one of its earlier forms, Prince said it stood for "man and woman united under God".

The symbol is actually a blatant ripoff of an alchemical sign for Soapstone. A web site posted this several years ago complete with scans of the original book it was taken from. Prince tacked on the "O" shape on top of it and tried to copyright it as his own.
look up the book "Symbols, Signs and Signets by Ernst Lehner" you will find it there [This message was edited Wed Jul 10 21:09:14 PDT 2002 by Tom]

Great symbol, great logo, I hope he continues to utilize it.
I really liked the early more simplified version of it and had it painted on my bedroom door in highschool (along with "make love, not war- erotic city come alive, lol) I did like the addition of the "horn" to show his unity with music. I'm a horrible artisit, though, so whenever I doodle it now, it always looks silly.

Love that symbol! I agree with NikkiDarling. He should still have it on his merchandise.
I'm probably in the minority, but I still wish he would've just kept it as his name. I believe that he went back to using "Prince" simply because people weren't accepting of the symbol name. Ah, screw'em!

I've always really liked the symbol.
Here's a brief history of it... The original 0+> symbol first appeared on Prince's records in 1982 on the cover of the 1999 album. It's more than likely Prince had been doodling the symbol on his own notes for a long time previous to it's public appearance. It became far more prominent in 1984 when he used it extensively in Purple Rain, on his bike and records etc. Prince didn't really use the 0+> symbol much again until 1990, when Graffiti Bridge came out. It's reappearance seems linked to the return of 'The Kid', so at that point Prince saw the 0+> symbol as part of that character's baggage. It was through this period that Prince really latched on to the 0+> symbol again, he even replaced the cross he always used to wear around his neck with the 0+> symbol. Initially, I expect, he only did this as part of the 'look' for the character of 'The Kid', but the symbol had obviously struck a chord with Prince again in a big way, and he never went back. The 0+> symbol was used extensively on the accompaning Nude tour. In the following year, when Diamonds And Pearls was in full swing, he even created an enormous version of the 0+> symbol as part of the lighting rig for the tour. On that tour he also ran adverts for his forthcoming album on the video screens before the concerts. At first, it was advertised as being called 0+>, but shortly into the tour the album's title had been subtly altered to . This was the first time the new symbol had been used. The reason for the addition of the 'musical horn' to his existing male/female symbol is unclear, but when it happened, Prince really identified with it and used it almost obsessively. After the release of the album the relationship between Prince and Warner Bros had passed the point of no return (I won't go into details here about exactly why). It was a combination of many factors that eventually led to the infamous name change. The name 'Prince' was being used on some lollipops without his permission. He also found out that the name 'Prince' was in a way 'owned' by WB, through the excusivity clause in his contract. He was also feeling the 'Prince' name and accompaning back-catalogue was becoming a millstone around his neck. He had so many hits that he felt obliged to play live, that there was hardly any room left for new material. 9 years of playing Purple Rain at every single concert was taking it's toll. As Prince put it, he needed to free himself from the 'Prince' persona. So in 1993 he killed off 'Prince' and changed his name to . Now he was free from all the baggage accociated with the name 'Prince'. Even though he wasn't yet free from his record contract, his name change gave him the mindset and personal freedom to do what he wanted. Free from the expectations of the Prince name, he experienced the most prolific period of writing since 1986. is now an integral part of Prince, and even though he has now reclaimed his name 'Prince', the symbol still plays an important role as Prince's 'logo'. I guess the question that everyone wanted to know the answer to in 1993 has been answered; "How do you pronounce ?"... Easy..."Prince".
