People here dump on EVERYTHING. There's very little consensus among us, it seems.

I am sitting here listening to the CD...and I really dig it. There is not a song on here I don't like. I see on here all the time people saying how if 3121 is like this they'll hate all over it. I don't get it...this is a great Prince album. I know its not "experimental" (whatever the hell that means), but its a fun, funky, nice flowing, album. I just want to know why people here don't like it.

That's you're opinion..... Everyone is different.

If you read the board long enough you will see every single song, album or project praised and criticised by varying members.

If you're looking for any grand conspiracy as to why 'people on here dump Musicology', I think you already answered you're own question! razz

i think there's plenty of consensus. it's just really easy to see ONE comment you really disagree with, and in a fit of frustration think "everyone on the org likes to dump on everything!" when in fact, that's really not the case at all.

Musicology is a VERY good album...

I think that the problem is that there is not one standout song on it.
Some songs fall into the average range (Life O' The Party), some fall
into the good range (Dear Mr Man) and some fall into the very good
category (Musicology, Man in U're Life), but I couldn't say that any one
song is Jump-out-of-your seat OUTSTANDING (ala, When Doves Cry, Fury etc)
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

It's the definition of a lifeless album.

At least NPS is ambitious enough to be extraordinarily bad. Musicology is simply dull to the point of apathy.

Pretty much every song is either right at or barely above or below the level of average.

It's Prince at his absolute least imaginative and hungry. You can almost hear how scared he is all over the album of it being rejected by the mainstream audience.

He plays it safe to the point of sucking any kind of feeling of quirky fun, urgency, or musical vibrance right out of it.

It's Prince-by-numbers, taking as few artistic risks as humanly possible. Not a single real stand out song on it.

The problem is, is that Musicology is perfectly listenable and an OK album, but thats it. We were expecting 5 star and we really got 3 star. The album is not indulgent, but none of the tracks really ignite. Its very B- when we expect A+. Theres no real standout tracks, only good ones, and I have to say the same for 3121, the tracks are ok, but thats it. They are good for Prince, but its just a very c. 1995sound that hasnt moved on. They just do not make me pay attention.

I am not saying the albums are bad, but I am not saying they are excellent either.

I love it too. This is supposed to be a site pro-prince site, but to me I think there is more negative thing said about prince than positive things. I really don't get it at all.

that's why there's a message board on npgmc.com.
all positivity should be directed that way.

Well to each there own...while I feel Mucisology is nothingmore than solid there are some embarassing moments...those moments whre your like WTF!! and thats for most of us. After 4 listens now to 3121 other than the chorus during Lolita which is beyond corny those moments don't exists. 3121 does slow a bit towards the end...but Musicology has songs on it that I don't even listen to...in fact I don't listen to it at all

Musicology marked Prince's Return to the Popculutre Album Machine. He was again getting help from outside NPG camp to suport his album. Prince went a little generic "safe" with the Musicology cd. That is why. Many long time listeners felt Prince neglected their suport in turn of an attempt to get more record sales and listeners.

MickG you truly are the 'son of god' (as your avatar announces), how else could U explain the insight that U have in reference to the above statement. Do you really know all that there is and all that has been as well as all that is to come?

Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

Miles

Coming after 'Rainbow Children', 'Musicology' was easily the most crushingly disappointing album in my Prince listening career (I started digging him in late '80s).

I have tried to get into this album twice, and twice I have failed. Yes, I think it is very well played and put together (he's a master of music, so that's almost to be expected by now), but it has to be the most boring and unoriginal album in his whole mature career. There is not one spark of real Prince wierdness, we get yet another retread of 'Do Me, Baby' (can't ven remember whether it's 'On the Couch' or IIWTMIYL or both!). The title track is just plain lame - all that awful 'back in the day' stuff.

The songs (except for 'Reflection', which is 'back in the day' done better, with a more personal slant) are tedious and have no real soul to them. He actually sounds like he's going through the motions to me. It's a poor Prince album when songs like 'Life of the Party' and 'Dear Mr Man' are 'highlights.

But worst of all is that damn dull, plasticcy production. WHEN is he going to startle us with his production again?? Hopefully 3121. He has used the same or similar production sound on Emancipation, NPS, Rave, Slaughter House, Choc Invasion and other odd tracks. He got away from it in the 'Rainbow Children' era, but then came back to it for 'Musicology'! Aaargh!!

So, it can be safely said I don't really like 'Musicology' then. biggrin

Musicology is ok, but as I said b4, it's borring..there is no strong song on it. It's an album I whon't miss if I lost it somewhere.I even like NPS more than this & N.E.W.S. Sorry but that's my opinion. I hope 3121 is better. The songs I've heard so far Is mutch better than anything On Musicology demon
