3121 Marketing Campaign What's up with Universal? I would have expected a bigger hype for Prince's new record "3121". Yes, there has been some chatter with the release of Black Sweat, but where is the heavy rotation on radio staions and Mtv, Vh1, etc.? The new record is supposed to be the bomb, but I'm pretty much only hearing that from people on this site and a few scattered articles here and there. C'mon Universal!! We can do better than this. We should be seeing and hearing Prince all over the place. It even seems that there isn't any new information on this site anymore either. Where are the leaks? Where are the slick teaser posters at bus stops and building faces downtown? I want more promotion! Black Sweat is the new Kiss and it's not getting the lips it deserves.

why are you so concerned about it? the only people who honestly should be worried about whatever exposure the album/singles get are those who are responsible for doing so at universal.

the album's not even out yet. hold yer horses and, in a couple of weeks, fasten yer seat belt.

we've done this already .see my comments here:
http://www.prince.org/msg/7/178771 This is the mostly heavily promoted Prince album in ages. Its not Universals fault radio isnt playing it. Blame program directors and the culture of American radio. Whats the deal with everyone wanting posters at bus stops around here ?

Me. working in radio, it is Universals fault radio isn't playing it!
Also its the PD who is to choose the singles to add to the rotation and alot of these PD's are young and stupid, or old and afraid to break new music by Prince and probably are more excited about the Ultimate collection more than 3121. If I were a PD, Prince's single BS AND TE AMO, would have had heavy rotation, but since I'm just a DJ, thats not good enough (HA) I love Prince and his new music. The Video for Black Sweat is on MTV daily! Its also on Vh1 periodically! hmmmm VH1 Soul plays it! Mtv Hits, I havent seen it yet nor the Mtv Jamz station. Either way Prince will score his first number 1 album in years. He will promote soon on some tv shows. I betcha! Universal pumps Nelly's Grillz which shouldve been off the play list by now but thats how the business works.

. Ok , me not being in radio , educate me . What is the record company's role in getting a song played on the radio (besides payola ) . When a record company heavily promotes a record to radio , what are some things they do?

Call me stupid, but what's PD stand for? Prince sung about this situation on Jukebox (With A Heartbeat) saying that you have to pay to get your songs played these days, which is a ridiculous situation, since independent record companies with little money don't have a chance of promoting their acts: Who got the brand new hip in Los Angeles? Guess what? (Yeah) Guess what? (Yeah) It ain't me, (uh) Uhn-uh Who tried 2 make me pay big money 4 the frequency? Guess what? (Yeah) Uh, I ain't giving up fees Not me, 2 know Saying all that, there's not much point, say, having tv spots until the album is available, in 2 weeks or so, so that they can add the taglne 'out now!'.
