Joint 2 Joint is my jam. This is the song that made me go ahead and listen to the rest of the album. "I" shelved it for 2 yrs. before listening to it in '98. That was due to my hatin' on Mayte.

His speaking voice gets me every time. "Oh great! Now you think you're my soulmate. You don't even know what kind of cereal I like. Wrong Capt. Crunch w/ soy milk. Cause cows are for calves, you'd probly take me for half. You don't love me, you're a faker. You just want me for my acres."

How can anyone say this album "sucks?" Let's face it...in 36 songs, there is bound to be "filler" for somebody's ears. But as a whole, this is a defining statement in Prince's career. If ANYONE else had released this album, the world would have stood still. The consistency is amazing. We expect so much from him that even 36 solid tracks meet some type of ridicule.

Tastes will vary, and styles will change...but "Emancipation" cannot be classified as a 'sucky' album. I know the common argument..."killer 2 disc...absolutely stunning single disc," but no one will ever agree on what would be on those one or two discs.

Give it a fair chance...and be amazed that one artist could come up with 36 songs that are that sonically different.

Peace,

Matthew

its his 2nd best album of the 90s!

possibly , its defo in my top 4 of the 90s , theres so much excellent material
on there , with Prince you really do have to buy everything cos chances are if you listen to people saying "it sucks" too much it'll put you off buying what you might find is a thoroughly consistent and very enjoyable triple album .

I like the album. I think it's pretty good. When I first sat down and listened to it, I honestly thought it was a masterpiece. But now I just think it's a great reocord. I do think it's a whole lot of filler on here. But as a whole I think the album is great. Disc 2 has some lovely ballads.

Easily his patchiest and most frustrating album, crap for CDs and vinyl, great for Ipods, theres 16 good songs and 20 fillers. This is Prince's most self indulgent album ever, half of the wack jams like Style, Mr Happy and Da Da Da must have only been inspired by his intense love of himself. Scrap D was like very scrappy. But it does have the following gems

Sex in the Summer
Holy River
One of Us
One Kiss at a time
Betcha by golly wow
La la means I love u
In this bed eye scream
Right back here in my arms
Saviour
Eye cant make u love me

These are fairly good
Curious Child
My Computer
New World
Emancipation
Courtin Time
Emale
Get your groove on
Joint to Joint

Any song not mentioned is the self indulgent filler I harped on about. It was cheap too, the case fell apart after 2 weeks and the cheaply made CDs got scratched within weeks and all of them were skipping after a year. Thank god for the MP3

Didn't hate her, was hatin'. In some way or another I like most fans considered myself in love w/ Prince so when he finally married that hurt. So like in real life when the one you have so called feelings for chooses another (not like I was in the running or anything), you tend to strongly dislike the person in their life. Jealousy is all it was and it took me awhile to get over it. I know there's no chance of me and P gettin' together but you can't blame a girl for wanting to.

I've had my fair share of disappointments where Prince albums are concerned, but Emancipation was the letdown of letdowns. The album he was born to make sounds like 3 discs of barf to me unfortunately.

With you all the way there.

I loathe this album. There are exactly 3 songs on it that I like despite trying to listen to it numerous times. The rest of the 33 are pooptoast. It's 3 discs of sentimental garbage. barf I don't like sappy, lovey-dovey Prince. I like nasty, funky Prince, therefore I hate Emancipation. More like, "We should all kick Mayte's ass for inspiring that crap." boo Thankfully he hasn't done the same for Mani. razz

I loved the album at first, and still like a lot of the songs. However, you are right about the programming...I knew it was an album that was going to date almost immediately. The songs themselves were good! I wish it was re-released now as a remix album, only with live drums or something...Or even if Pharell produced it - that would be cool...Ha.

If you enjoy 90s R&B you love it if you don't well you don't. As with so much of Prince's output from 90s and beyond it comes down to whether you listen to and enjoy R&B/hip-hop.

So it's never really a valued judgement on the songs, it's just instant genre prejudice. If you are still pining for Wendy & Lisa you may as well jump off the purple train.

I think those people who really appreciate the artistry of his music will find many things to appreciate about "Emancipation". If your mindset is to compare it to other Prince material, you will miss the point completely. At some point, you have to stop looking for "Purple Rain".....

Emancipation is a great album - Even though many think 3 Discs is too much I always want more when it comes to Prince and his music.

Some interesting and pleasant cover tunes too, Betcha By Golly Wow is sweet, One of Us I love the intro and the song is pretty darn cool too.

Soul Sanctuary is one of my favourites along with Holy River.

There is something for everyone on this album, or at least that is how I see it.

wink

I have both versions !!! One is censored the other has Parental advisory ..... I am just a geek..... wink

I disagree. I loved 90s R&B/hip-hop. I just don't like sappy, sentimental love songs, with a few exceptions. cool

I just have one question. I didn't know Sheryl Crow's "One uf us" was a cover...ehm.. Well, in the booklet it says that Eric M. Bazilian wrote it. When I google it it seems as if Joan Osborne wrote it. now who did write it? And if Eric wrote it, did P compose the music or? May sound like silly questions but I wanna know. biggrin

Eric Bazilian wrote.

Joan Osbourne recorded.

Prince covered it.

.

I just wanna know if a version of Eric Bazilian (The singer of the Hooters, right?)
does exist?

Sappy sentimental lovesongs become that through their lyrics. I was referring to production techniques and genre stylings. For example it's been said Emancipation and Kirky J's productions recall R. Kelly at times. Irregardless of Prince's lyrics.

I don't know a lot about the production end of things--to me it all sounds similiar...but Emancipation has a lot of slow, lovey-dovey songs, which I don't like. If the lyrics were lovey-dovey & the songs were funky & fast, maybe I'd like them better. shrug For the record, I never liked R. Kelly, either. (And BTW irregardless isn't a word, it's just 'regardless'--not trying to be condescending, just letting ya know) smile

It's a very good albums. It has extreme highs (Soul Sanctaruy, The Love We Make, Sleep Around) and extreme lows (Mr Happy, Da Da Da) but there was some great songs on it. One of my favorite of his in the 90's.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
