There's no denying that it is a pop masterpiece that hit the public at exactly the right time in his career. It's one of those rare moments in popular culture where all the elements click in a perfect way.
But, I still would have to rank SOTT as his best album. It is so complex, clever, dark, hopeful, beautiful, musically adventurous, ahead of it's time and uncompromised. The wealth, breadth, and diversity of material is astonshing. The complex gospel organ and vocal arrangement of Adore, the gender mindf@ck and brilliant bassline of IIWYG, the visual poetry of Dorothy Parker, and the greatest funk song ever made in Housequake are just the beginning of the landscape. The bottom line is what other artist has a four album roster like PR, SOTT, 1999 and Parade? No to the Beatles, RS, Marvin Gaye, JB, Sly, Stevie, etc. are you saying not even stevie? or that these are the exceptions? Space for sale...

I'm pretty sure I'd place albums by Mr. Stevie Wonder on the same scale as Prince's best stuff.
You can't deny the total genius of Talking Book, Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life, and Hotter Than July. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I love Stevie as well, but for a four album quartet I would still say Prince has every contemporary beat. Hotter Than July was very good but not on par with his 70's brilliance. I would throw his Fulfillingness First Finale (Boogie on Reggae Women, You Haven't Done A Thing, Creepin) in that group. Hey by the way, a good analogy could be made comparing the pop masterpieces Talking Book and Purple Rain and the expansive SITKOL and SOTT. Well maybe a reach.

None of them have as deep a catalog as Prince and none of them can boast to having four better albums.
