I tried to warn you guys. The current format is not friendly to Prince anymore, whether it's because he's not good at writing hits or he's just not being given a fair shot to chart anymore, or both.

Don't get your hopes up again, regardless of whether or not you think the song is great and sounds like hit material.

The Hot 100's top debut belongs to Prince's "Black Sweat" at No. 60. Also new are Madonna's "Sorry" (No. 70), 50 Cent and Olivia's "Best Friend" (No. 72), Nick Lachey's "What's Left of Me" (No. 89), LL Cool J's "Control Myself" featuring Jennifer Lopez (No. 93) and HIM's "Wings of a Butterfly" (No. 97).

yep you were likely right...but I always felt while he may be old news people could not deny his talent. I also thought Universal would be able to push it...regardless of if people wanted to hear it or not. I thought it would be a paper hit so to speak..but the airplay just isn't materializing

Black Sweat & BLB is #37 on almun downloads

shocked ...thats too bad...I'm fairly convinced now that the door may be official closed on P as far as charting goes. Radio just simply ignores him

I've seen the kind of crap that populates the 'charts' nowadays, and i'd rather not see P in the company of it.

Don’t close the door on him yet. He’ll chart. It’s just that it will probably be with a slow song, such as was the case with Call My Name. Slower songs work well with the Urban AC market, which should still be open to him. Just imagine the chart position of Call My Name if he had download sales anywhere near to Black Sweat (or if they counted then). Also, Black Sweat could stay on the charts if he releases the CD to stores now. Lots of Prince’s fans are of an “older” demographic group, which may mean that many don’t do the download thing. I guess we’ll see.

Prince indeed falls off the hot 100 this week, so #60 was the peak and then vanish.

It's not the charts so much as the record industry in general. I think including download sales though is a good way to take away Clear Channel's complete dominance of the charts the last few years.

And the British charts are just as messed up. If a song doesn't debut in the top ten, then it's never going to get there.

But even with downloads etc "factored in" the weight is far too much with radio play. Therefore, there is too much power with the radio conglomerates who dictate what you listen to and consequently what charts.

The music industry in Canada isn't as catered towards kids as it is in the States. Radio doesn't necessarily cater to a youth driven audience here.

We have MuchMusic which is the crappy Canadian equivelant to MTV, but the artists featured on the channel never sell a lot of records in Canada anyways.

Yeah, MuchMusic is SHIT. It used to be pretty good, but it's tried to emulate MTV so much now that they barely even play any music. They're every bit as annoying and phony now, and it's sad.

MuchMoreMusic is pretty good though.

Well, like it or not, the charts are much more accurate now than they were before. Remember, the week after Billboard started using Soundscan, instead of just relying on record store reports, NWA's Efil4zaggin debuted at no.2. There's no way in hell that would've happened before. And remember, the charts are designed for people in the industry; chart-watching can be fun sometimes but they aren't meant for fans, they're meant for industry-folks.

And besides, no matter how the charts are/were compiled...people just weren't buying "Black Sweat." It didn't catch on. Once all the fans got their chance at a purple ticket, that song was done.
