On the other hand, what does radio usually play? The most popular stuff (that exactly is the problem imo).

There's no way the radio stations can impartially be playing the most popular stuff - if they are choosing what we get to hear before it is even popular! Radio managers are basically setting the trends of musical tastes by choosing what they consider will be popular - and then the song appears popular because it goes up the charts because of the radio play!! Talk about a self-fullfilling cycle!

As Prince says on Jukebox (With A Heartbeat): Do the people even know what they want/If they never hear what they need?

You definitely got a point here. On the other hand, there are examples of songs reaching high chart positions without any radio airplay. Radio controls a lot, but not all (yet). It really becomes a problem for artists whose fans are not the usual "single buyer", like Prince, The Rolling Stones and so on. They have problems appearing in the single charts, and missing radio airplay may be a part of that.

Big Fan of Prince's but Black Sweat is weak.. I've listened to it twice. If it wasn't for the updates on chart positions, etc I wouldn't of even remembered it existed..

Great entry based on lots of downloads...there was a time that radio would HAVE to play a song that is a Hot Shot Debut in what is almost the upper reaches of the chart. Sadly that time is gone.
All good things they say never last...

That's not what I meant.

First of all, I don't think that the original comment ruined the thread. Enough people posted afterwards.

All I meant is that we had numerous "Prince has lost it", "When did (whatever) go", "He's old" kind of threads within the last few months - not to mention those who exactly knew that "3121" was giong to be a disaster just by listening to the first sound snippet of TAC. Those who called for more "positivity" during that period were often overheard.

Now that things seem to take a different route, isn't it somehow understandable that some of those people tend to make some more "edgier" remarks on the negativity addicts? Btw, the post wasn't even directed to a specific person...

but note that one comment is directed at the art/product which is released to be critiqued (ie, enjoyed or not) ....while the other is directed at individual participants of this communities personal opinion....

you think thats fair?

and my ruin statement was not directed towards the thread..but moreso the mood of the thread.

cha know what i mean?

Your constant jabs at the "mood" of the thread appear to be snarking as you called it. So, its OK to come on here and continuously bash the song and its chart potential, but its not OK celebrate its slight success. Shit, please tell me when we are allowed to be sarcastic, negative, or celebritory. I just want to know when its cool.

yes but in that case Call My Name charted on radio airplay alone..if black sweat had that same kind of airplay it might be in the top 40

On a side note .... this is 2006 and the 2 Top debuts are #60 Prince , Black Sweat and #70 Madonna , Sorry ...how cool is that , lets hear it for the old timers ! wink

Hey and don't forget, Bon Jovi landed in the top 40 with their new country song (!!!).

Now where the heck are A Flock of Seagulls?

another thing i cant figure out is why they didnt for adds on Hot A/C stations with Black Sweat? that format should be Prince's new radio home along with Madonna,Bon Jovi and any other veteran acts..his is missing a lot of radio spins not going to that format

Let me get this straight about the US charts:

1. Prince has the number 1 "selling" single this week.

2. He's getting next to fuck-all airplay.

3. In the old rules where sales mattered this song would already be a big hit (i.e sales alone).

4. Because radio stations wont play the song it has probably peaked at 60.

5. Taking into account the fact that radio wont play a Prince song, even if it is the top seller, then he will NEVER have an US hit single again.

Is this correct?
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Black Sweat is ahead of the new Madonna song, the new LL Cool J song and the new 50 Cent song, so there is hope. But you know where I stand, this is his sellout move, since Black Sweat is such a shitty song.

What to you is not a sellout move? What should Prince be doing instead? I'm not trying to knock you, I'd really like to know where you are coming from.

I for one think that's not bad at all for a debut. I pray he goes higher on the chart.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

At radioandrecords.com, which is kind of like Billboard magazine but I think more of an radio industry magazine, Beautiful, loved and blessed by Tamar feautring Prince is #22 this week on the urban AC national airplay chart. It was #24 last week. Also, Black Sweat was 3rd on the Urban AC new and active list.
