Leeds.....

in terms of collaborations they equal wendy and lisa in synergy.

I think you're being too generous. Wendy and Lisa hold the top spot in that department. Sheila, Eric, and Dez were very important but not quite on that level. I don't know where Clare Fischer fits in either but the relationship with Wendy and Lisa was one of a kind-- I do know that.

I actually miss Atlanta Bliss more.

that'll be the trumpet though.

For me, the problem with the live horn sections over the last few years have been that the arrangements don't seem to be too well 'integrated' with the entire band sound, almost as if they were chosen at random from '101 funky horn licks'

Whereas with the Eric / Atlanta combo and even the Hornheads the lines were really an integral part of and complemented the arrangements as opposed to being 'sat on top' of them.

Just my 2p.

It's interesting as well that Eric didn't take part in the Small Club performance in '88. I wonder what it'd have been like with him there?

Anyone who can write crazy shit like the horn line in "Rockhard In A Funky Place" commands respect. Thy name is Eric Leeds lol

Maceo and Candy are great funk players, but Eric adds that "be-bop" sound that seems to fit Prince's music like a glove.

The same line that was also brilliantly used in ICNTTPOYM on the SOTT tour!

Yeah cool. Also used at breakneck speed in the "kick-some-ass" part of "Beautiful Night" on the SOTT tour razz

Novabreaker

Eric fit Prince's music perfectly in the 80s, however if some of you think PRINCE bottomed out after the mid-90s Eric Leeds for one certainly did! His saxophone contributions to "Emancipation" are very tired, unimaginative, waste of breathing air. And as far as "N.E.W.S" sucking it has a lot to do with Leeds' slow solos. Bleurgh.

But of course - fantastic stuff in the late 80s, all throughout.

I would have to go with Eric because of his tenure and sheer body of work with Prince, however, I must agree with someone's earlier post stating that in live performance, no one was as funky and sharp as Eddie M. (Maceo included) Eddie was the truth. GO back and revisit some of his contributions. They are formidible. thumbs up!
