EMANCIPATION WARS 2002!

The year was 1996 and the Prince internet community had just started to flourish thanks to the much-cherished PPML and Steve Hammer's chat rooms. Another major event in world history had also just happened that year, The Artist Formerly Known As Prince had just released his career-defining 3CD opus, "Emancipation". And man, did that behemoth of an album have potential! Amidst the 36 sprawling tracks there was hidden a true masterpiece containing twelve excellent songs that were just waiting to be singled out. That is twelve and exactly twelve (12) songs - no more no less, because everybody agreed that there were exactly twelve excellent songs on the record and the rest should have been best left unreleased. Yet nobody agreed on which twelve songs they were! Thus the Emancipation wars had begun.

A lot of blood was shed, contradicting opinions flung and life-long friendships broken when trying to track down what kind of songlisting would have made the greatest ever Prince record - and of course, had Prince himself released the album as just a single album he without a doubt would have released exactly the same configuration as you. And furthermore, if he only would had released your version he definitely would have had a huge international hit saving his commercial career that since has started to wane ever so rapidly.

For good old times sake, and I am sure there is still a lot of frustrated blood inside of you all that is just seeking a way to get out even after all these years, I am inviting all of you to once more open the Emancipation Wars for a seasoned debate:

So, in your own divine opinion, which twelve (12) songs should have constituted Emancipation - the one CD release? (Note that you are not only encouraged just to list your picks but also if possible, in the true spirit of the original Emancipation Wars, disparage other people's choices as loudly as you can.)

THere is actually no merit to a listener's theory of what the tracklist of Emancipation should have been. The fact that Prince created the work and is the only true determining factor of what makes us admire his work in the first place renders any proposed alterations irrelevant.
The art is the vision of the artist. Everything we know and love or even dislike about Prince is a product of Prince as a musical entity. That can not be disputed or corrected. It just is. Certain things in the world simply are. The grass is green and the shy is blue and tha tis all there is to it. What true basis is there to assert that the grass should be orange? And if it was, there would be so many that thought green was the way it should have been anyway.

My classmates used to call the album EMASTURBATION, because of the famous sexual content of some (older) Prince songs.

Well a firend of mine... no, let's just call him "someone I know" retitled the album "Emasculation" because of the, you guessed it, falsetto singing.

can somebody tell me why they would put
"right back in my arms" on the list of 12 best songs?
That is one of the weakest crap songs he has ever released.
Same for mr. happy, same for almost the entire cd 1 except for Jam of the year and I cant make you love me.
Disc 2 and 3 rule!
Disc 1 sucks.

So this is my 12 best:

1 Jam of the year
2 I cant make you love me
3 Sex in the summer
4 Soul sanctuary
5 The Holy River
6 Friend, lover, sister, mother, wife (tho the title is a bit too long, the song is excellent)
7 Face down
8 Sleep around
10 My computer
11 One of us
12 The love we make
You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.

THANK YOU!!! I 'member the day I got Emancipation, Vi asked me what was "the cut." Without hesitation I answered "Joint 2 Joint." I still feel the same way. Other tracks my tug at my emotions more, but for pure sonic pleasure, it's all about Joint 2 Joint.

PS, Novabreaker...Get Yo Groove On AND Damned If I Do??? Ouch! I hope these are included in the "not necessarily your favorites" category! smile

Well, it wasn't released for only one reason and you know what it was. Let's not discuss that here.

Anyway, up yours. "Mr, Happy" is one of the worst Prince songs ever wink (just kidding dear friend, I'm just trying to keep up the genuine "Emancipation Wars" attitude. And man, am I getting really nostalgic rushes by reading these posts)

-On the other hand, this is really goood cover.

Prince hasnt made many cover songs, but i think than Everyday's a winding road (Sheryl Crow) on RaveUn2 is totally fabulous!!!

Actually, Emancipation was excellent in It's 3-cd format. I really can't understand why everyone complains about It's length. Would U all have complained If Prince had released Dream Factory or Crystal Ball as originaly planned??
But if I had 2 limit the creative body of work 2 just 12 trax, they would be:

Somebody's Somebody
Get Your Groove On
In This Bed I Scream
One Kiss At A Time
Soul Sanctuary
The Holy River
New World
Betcha By Golly Wow
Friend,Lover,Sister,Mother,Wife
Slave
Mr. Happy

For the record i think the triple set was fine , i love it. Yes it was Prince chasing trends to an extent but adding his own purple flavour to it. He was showing the young breed of neo- soulists that he could do this shit as well and make it better. Again , when you put it into the context of his back catalogue it adds more variety to the purple menu.

Why exactly do you want 12 songs? If you are all Prince fans you will be cool with as many ans he can release. 36 was great to have in one shot. Knocking it down to 12 for what? For commercial purposes? Please. The general public will not accept Prince anymore, and most likely never will... so give it a rest. It is like saying... should the npg music club cut down on the downloads, picking only the 10 best songs to download? Ridiculous. If Prince released only 12 songs in a condensed-Emancipation, and you heard there were 24 or more unreleased from that album... all of you fools would be dying for those tracks. Now that they are on the album, you want them off. Wack.

TRON

I like what a sprawling grab bag Emancipation is, but...if I were to change something about it, I'd divide it into 2 completely separate albums. My ideal followup to the Gold Experience and C&D would've been a balls out, uptempo type thing that would go something like this:

1. Jam of the Year
2. Right Back Here In My Arms
3. White Mansion
4. In This Bed I Scream
5. Sex in the Summer
6. Emale
7. Joint 2 Joint
8. Slave
9. New World
10. The Human Body
11. Face Down
12. Style
13. Sleep Around
14. My Computer
15. Emancipation (not crazy about this cut but it's gotta be on there)

and then...I would've rounded up the best ballads and made that its own creature in the vein of 'Kamasutra'- a gift to Mayte. All of those songs are so personal to their relationship that they have their own theme and sortof split the album up. I would've called it "The Wedding Album" and released it in '97 so he didn't have a missing year in there. The tracklist for that would go something like this:

1. Somebody's Somebody
2. Betcha By Golly Wow!
3. I Can't Make You Love Me
4. One Kiss At A Time
5. Soul Sanctuary
6. Curious Child
7. Dreamin' About U
8. The Holy River
9. Let's Have A Baby
10. Saviour
11. FLSM/W
12. La, La, La Means I Love You
13. One of Us
14. The Love We Make
15. 20/20

See, now doesn't that seem well-balanced and generous. I know I wasn't creative with the order or anything, but you get the idea. Maybe they're a little thematically too strict this way but they sound good to my ears. And without so much filler to sift through, they seem like top-notch 4 star albums. Try burning a copy and see whatcha think.
