I can only duet 'Orgasm' with 'Vagina', because that's what I need to do that song.

Well sir, it just makes sense. "Get Yo Groove On" was played live throughout the Emancipation tour and it clearly was one of Prince's favourites as well as "Damned If I Do", which was lined up as one of the 6 single releases. Of course the whole campaign backfired because of the personal problems and all.

Actually, endorphin... those two are some of the most complex tracks on the album. What can't you handle little prog? biggrin

And furthermore, if you ask me "Get Yo Groove On" is one of the most important songs of his career. Not necessarily because of it's impact on anything, but because it showed a shift back to the earlier peppier sonwriting style of the classic Prince era - as opposed to the darker first half of the 90's period, where he kind of lost his featherlight touch on funk. It's just an incredibly delightful, positive track. Sort of the closest thing to "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" we got in the 90's. We didn't get that style of songwriting in who knows how many years... it just sort of disappeared.

Damned If I Do... Musically I do like this song, but there's something about his VOICE that just bothers me (is it too monotone? I STILL can't put my finger on it...)

Get Yo Groove On... Call it Cream '96. I'll admit, if your looking for pure commercial promise, Get Yo Groove On is right at the top of the list. Still, I think you can have commercial success without the song being so light it's may just float away. I think Sleep Around was the cross-over hit waiting to happen. It was the only track on that set that my non-prince friends actually responded to.

PS- I'll just pretend you didn't compare Get Yo Groove On to It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night smile

(woops, spelling problems again!)

I'll just pretend you didn't compare "Cream" to "Get Yo Groove On". smile

Though I do find it strange that you can't see the similarities between "Beautiful Night" and "Groove". Of course, "Beautiful Night" is far superior, but both are light sounding funk songs with horns and complex horn arrangements and come with similiar lyrical content. Odd.

I agree on "Sleep Around". That would have been the cross-over hit at least in UK and Europe. That kind of music was having a sort of momentum here back then (and still is).

Even though I could name 12 songs for a single album, I'm glad it was a triple CD.
These 12 songs are my favorite, but I couldn't name 2, that I don't like...only one: 'Da,da,da'.
Maybe he should have left 'One Of Us' of the album. Don't mess with a masterpiece, even if you're gonna do it 'New Power Generation Style'. Talking about Style, I think that is a VERY funny song.
Furtermore, imo the three discs all make an album on their own: The firts is a very poppy album, the second is more laid-back and the thirth is more up-tempo for most of the songs.
Many critics claimed that the album didn't have must experimentation on it and that's not true. They probably stopped after the first two discs (who can blaim them...) because some songs on the thirth disc are very different to anything he's done. And also is the heartbeat in 'Sex In The Summer' I still find that very bizar, especially because his kid died.

Well, if Prince had selected is a future single I don't think I have to rationalize it too much. It was also played to music journalists at the Emancipation preview press conferences. Plus it's his first real take on latin music styles. Not my personal favourites though, but it was one of the most important tracks on that album.

I really can't see how anyone could leave Let's Have A Baby, and, to a lesser degree, FLSM/W off their 12 songs.

The vocals on these two are incredible.

I say the vocals are incredible.

However, the fact remains it was NOT released, and I for one am VERY thankful that it wasn't! biggrin

I hardly think P choosing a song for a single is a good indication of the worthiness of a song or it being 'single-material' (at least in recent years) wink

Good point about the Latin influence, though!

(coffee, i need coffee...can't type/spell any more...)

Well, it wasn't released for only one reason and you know what it was. Let's not discuss that here.

Anyway, up yours. "Mr, Happy" is one of the worst Prince songs ever wink (just kidding dear friend, I'm just trying to keep up the genuine "Emancipation Wars" attitude. And man, am I getting really nostalgic rushes by reading these posts)

Sex in the Summer would've made my list were it not for the heart-beat. Just knowing that it's in there makes the song feel kinda sad/morbid to me.

I suppose I could look at it as a memorial, a celebration of a life that went away to quickly, though...

I guess I can let it slide, as "The Human Body" is practically my favorite on the whole thing but it won't most people's top 12!

My classmates used to call the album EMASTURBATION, because of the famous sexual content of some (older) Prince songs.

FACEDOWN1977

Face Down
White Mansion
Somebody's somebody
Curious Child
Dreamin About U
JOint to JOint

Slave
Human Body
Sleep Around
My Computer
Savior (or Holy River as a substitute)
The Love we Make

I know I'm gonna get killed for saying this, but Chaos & Disorder had a couple of songs (I like it There, title track) that could have made it on to Emancipation versus being WB filler.

Good list otherwise! 'My Computer' is a goofy song, I REALLY like it, but then I rio-lize what I'm singing and it seems a titch silly..it's in my top 18, though, just not my top 12!

Have any of your opinions about thé 12 songs changed. In the same discussion just after it was released, did you mention other songs the now? If so, any idea why?

Normally, the songs on an album you like most after the first listen, are the songs you like less and less after a few spins
