Emancipation: Alot of it sounded really generic. "The Holy River" is a standout though, and there were other songs as well that were good

NewPower Soul: CD sucked, but "The One", "Come On" and "Wasted Kisses" kick ass

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic: "So Far So Pleased", "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold" and "Man O War" were good pop songs, and I Love You But I Dont Trust You Anymore is just downright classic

1996-2000 there's a wealth of great material. It's the last five years or so which is lacking.

Give it up for CHAOS AND DISORDER, which is clearly the best collection from this period. Standout tracks are the title track, "I Like It There," and "The Same December." This CD rocks more than any of the others from the period.

NPS has really grown on me the last few years.
I'm still not fond of TGE.
Rave is a mixed bag.
Emancipation is my favorite of that era.

Disagree...the worst

Seconded!

Quite possibly his worst album ever in my opinion.

Exactly. Emancipation is three discs of steaming pooptoast
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Emancipation is great. It's 3x the pleasure. Sure there are a few weaker tracts like Courtin Time and We gets Up but even those have their charm. Disc 2 is nearly flawless.

I've never heard whining about "plastic production" and other nonsense outside of this website. You either like the songs or you don't. Production doesn't make or break a song unless it doesn't match the song, which is rarely the case with Prince.

You must have missed this one:

In all honesty I think C&D is a better album than Emancipation as it at least has an edge to it and isn't massively overproduced. It is also short, and crap that doesn't last long isn't as insufferable as interminable crap that goes on forever.

Agreed!

I like it a lot more than Emancipation.
It's punkier, rawer and not so yawn than disc 2 of Emancipation.
I know every record of him exactly, I could sing all records in real time (if I could sing), but this one (Emancipation)is a hard record to stand (and stay awake..)
Kinda lame..sorry

Wow! What can I say but thanks to you all for suggesting your faves. You all seem to have such a mix of different songs that you'll like. It just goes to show how openminded Prince fans can be to music.

I went missing in the 96 to 03 period because I was either into death/thrash metal, depressing rock or dance music and that too shows an eclectic mix!

Personally I'm now more of a fan of the 78-82 period plus the mad B-sides from 84-88 than the mid 80's stuff which I was lovin when I got into him first.

I asked this question because i was doing my own mega 5 or 6 hour compalation of P's best stuff, in release order, and it went from Sexy MF to The Everlasting now... Too much of a gap eh? (hadn't got round to ripping Come and C&D to puterat that point).

I've recently got TGE, Emancepation, Rave, The Truth and Karmasutra so loads of catching up to do! Up to now I really like Shhh.. and The Truth seems like an interesting listen.
