Well... she did say that "it might end up being cool." Lot's of cool things start from a black background, just look at all of those wonderful Caravaggio paintings!

Thank you Ice, but I know Caravaggio works, I've even seen some of them all up close 'n stuff. I just couldn't quite remember if he was a Baroque artist or not...
We had to study the "Conversion On the Way To Damascus" in History and Appreciation of Visual and Performing Arts.

You are quite welcome smile

I love spreading the word about Caravaggio! The guy is overlooked by most people who are not art historians or students of art, but he was one of the Masters.

Only because he used lights and darks which was, as I recall, characteristic of the time period. Rembrandt, Caravaggio, the masters of the time, as I remember.

In that case...

A lot of the great painters in history have worked from a black background...

Just check out Bruegel!

This is one of my favorite paintings by that guy:

Very interesting, Ice..

My favorite painting is called "The Halberdier" by Simon Vouet. I can't find any online copies of it, but it hangs in the Dayton Art Institute. (www.daytonartinstitute.org) I could spend all day there just staring at it, and I'm not really sure WHY.

I also like this one, by April Gornik...

Do you like Hieronymus Bosch?

Here is the central panel from his GREAT painting, "The Temptation of St. Anthony:"

Here's a good question...What do you think of this:

Makes me mad every time I see it. A monkey could do that...

That painting did nothing for me... call me silly, but I just didn't like it.

It reminded me of a tacky, knit sweater... unless that was the name of the painting, at which point it was good.

Well, the title was "Nightwood." But it's not the worst one there. There's one that's simply a white canvas with a blue line painted around it...WTF...That's not art rolleyes

It was actually the overall surrealist, long-legged animal thing that got me... I like that crap.

By the way, try this amazing painting of Napolean by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres:
