It's a really cool record that people shouldnt take so seriously. It's mostly just for fun, but with some serious moments aswell. Great album!

I agree. I think he was just trying to make a little noise in the clubs and black radio. Too bad that both venues were closed to him by that point. The art/cover is hideous though. How can an "artist" to the level of Prince put out something so tacky, cheesy and ugly as the artwork he was using during this period. Real cutting edge artists would've been lining up to put work on his album cover.

You ain't lying.

I look at it as more of a groove record. Something to play in the background, and not to be taken at face value. Either way, "Come On" is the gem from this bad boy.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I like NewPowerSoul
Definitely some underrated gems on there, but most
importantly, it contains Prince's best ever ballad
The One!

Yeah, I said it!
Adore in nice, but The One is amazing cloud9
If you will, so will I

I really liked this album a lot--until I heard Prince's earlier stuff. biggrin NPS is okay, but after hearing all of Prince's other output, it definitely goes down a few notches. But I'll gladly take it over Emancipation anyday...
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

the alblum had weird production ... some songs have a psuedo-live sound to it (which worked on purple rain and It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night and several others, but on this alblum it just sounds slapped together) . the crowd clips made the songs seem a little disjointed.

though i didn't care for them on the CD:
push it up,
freaks on this side,
& funky music

all sounded better live (though i guess that goes for most of his music). At least that was my delusion from the NPS tour. then again the Larry set did set the bar low, so perhaps i would need to see these tracks live again.

I dont care for it much.
Very Substandard.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

NPS is great. It's like a truncated Emancipation.

The worst thing about the album is Doug E Fresh. I mean he's gotta be up there on on the crap-o-meter of shockingly wrong related artists.

Here's how I see it:

1. New Power Soul
2. Mad Sex
3. When U Love Somebody
4. Shoo-Bed-Ooh
5. Come On
6. Wasted Kisses
7. The One
8. Until U're In My Arms Again

And there you have a rather listenable mini album, a la the short n sweet days of Dirty Mind. I removed possibly the worst three songs of Prince's career, just for you.

you have one side of a GREAT album!

and "Come On" is one of the best things I've heard him do! It's completely Camille and has a similar vocal quality as "If I Was Your Girlfriend".

Unfortunately, the bad songs on the album are excruciatingly bad. "Shoo-be-doo" is awful, "When U Love Somebody" is like something I stepped in and "Push It Up" is craptacular. "eye Like Funky Music" COULD have been good, if it had just had a decent drum beat behind it (Kirky J's tepid drum program ruins the track for me). "New Power Soul" needs to be remixed into a funkier form, but the song has potential. "Mad Sex" is ALMOST there, and if it just had a wicked guitar lick or two added I could see it beeing a real gem.

Unfortunately, only "The One", "Wasted Kisses" and "Come On" really live up to their potential at all. The album has three decent tracks, a couple of half-baked ones and a whole lot of crap. If only he'd saved the good tracks and combined them with the few decent tracks from Rave, he mighta had something.

You...you..you think "I Like Funky Music" is a track that "could have been good, if it just had a decent drum beat " eek eek eek ? ? ????

I kinda like that album for what it is, see my post above, BUT I LIKE FUNKY MUSIC ? Of all the other songs ? Aaaarrrgh ! That song is unlistenable....aural poison...a contradiction by itself...shockingly wrong...nothing...nothing..absolutely NOTHING...nuttin´ can save that song...not a decent drum beat, no guitars, nothing, nada...just like Jughead,Get Off (the 1990 version) and 1999 TNM....the rest has at least some substance..but this song ?

I can´t even force myself to listen to it...

I´m seriously surprised that you mention this one as a song with potential...why did you choose this one over , say, ShoBedOoh ?

Really a nice album tainted by the less than stellar , ahem...albumcover "art"work...but I really like the music on it...the only songs I DON ´T like on it are Push It Up and I Like Funky Music.

I love the rest for what it is...stuff like this wouldn´t have been possible with WBs.
Really, how can you diss songs like :
Come On ( the maxi was one of the last great maxis)
The One
Wasted Kisses
ShooBedOoh

These songs are great, and if they were bootlegs/outtakes people would be praising them nonstop....

The rest is decent.

And talking about Musicology...I can´t stand the title track itself but A Million Days and If I was The Man In Your Life and Reflection and so on were nice Prince songs....only unlistenable track in my opinion was On The Couch ( unbearably boring) and myabe Dear Mr.Man and Life O the Party for their cheesy lyrics....other than that it was ok ...the lyrics are getting a bit too cryptical these days, so not everybody can relate to them but he´s still releasing tight music.

Well, I find "Shoo-Be-Doo" to be a steaming pile of shoobedoodoo. It has no potential to speak of, other than the potential to make me wretch.

ILFM has potential: It has a great guitar lick, the funky Camille voice and a party vibe running throughout (live, this song was great). If he'd put a Mike B or John Blackwell powered drum sound behind it, and had a better recording of the audience callback, it might have actually been a kickin' track. As it is, it's a boring, watered-down number that doesn't really do much of anything.

It's the best Prince album of the 90s.

It reminds me a lot of the Controversy album. I have no idea why people would listen to Graffiti Dirge, Diamonds & Turds, Bum, Cacka & Dysentry, Constipation or The Cold Experience, over this.

And it's Newpower Soul - not New Power Soul.

And it is a Prince album - not an NPG album. It's more of a Prince album than Graffiti Dirge ever was.
