I didnt actually BUY my first Prince album - it sort of fell into my hands - my dad used to work in Saudi Arabia and used to bring LOADS of tapes (now how old does that make me look - TAPES??) home and when I was around 13 or 14 he gave me the Purple rain album which at first I nearly gave straight back to him but afeter one hit I was hooked - the only thing was - he caught me listening to Darling nikki I mean, how could I have explained THAT and what Nikki was actually doing with that magazine when I wasnt even sure what it meant myself????
Only when I look back, as Im now the grand old age of 32 do I cringe with embarassment on how it must have looked, me walking around the house singing that song..... Anyhoos, could I say a big hello to everyone - Im new to this site and am soooo happy I have found people as huge a fan as I am!!!! xx 'Ive never been 1 2 hide my feelings, Baby, u blow my mind I painted your face upon my ceiling, I stare at it all the time...' http://www.myspace.com/welshmess

"Dirty Mind".
I had the 45's "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" first. Then I had the 45 of "Uptown". When I heard "Head" all over the radio and it wasn't available on 45, then I knew it was time to get the album. I loved it from start to finish and went back and bought the "Prince" album about a month later. Andy is a four letter word.

As a collector, u might want to track it down some day. Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

Yaa, "the very best of prince," two weeks later i bought purple rain. I apologize personally for the Crusades, I personally apologize for televangelists, I personally apologize for neglecting the poor and the lonely, I ask you to forgive me, forgive us, for we have misrepresented Jesus.

"The Rainbow Children" (2001)
I listened to a short cut of "Last November" on amazon, and that convinced me, so I ordered it. The second was "Musicology", then "Purple Rain", then "Sign O' The Times", then "The Hits" (3CD), ... and so on.

My 1st was the double album 1999! I was in 7th grade and I remember thinking... Man I'm gonna be OLD when 1999 actually arrives! Shortly after I picked up Controvery LP. I remember the dark images of that video scared the heck out of me!!! So I HAD to buy it! Hey I was 11 years old...
Interestly it wasn't until after Purple Rain that I began to search out the 1st 3, then my eyes were OPENED and it was then that I knew good and bad! Ha!!! Never let me slip, cause if I slip, then I'm slippin

The first CD I bought was "The Very Best Of Prince" . The first official Prince album I bought was "Around The World In A Day. I was orginally going to buy "Purple Rain" but the record store didn't have that so I picked up ATWIAD.

My first Prince purchase was ATWIAD on cassette. INterestingly, that was also my first CD purchase. And (fam alert) I bought the CD on a super sale at Best Buy about a year before I even had a CD player
It was a fun CD though, it was in a fold-out type thing and the CD was just in a cardboard sleeve. That thing is BEAT-UP now, though! I believe my first vinyl was the 12" for Let's Pretend We're Married. But I may be wrong there...About 1 year after ATWIAD my purchasing exploded a bit...

First MC: Diamonds And Pearls (in 1991 - as I mentioned earlier) First LP: Sign O' The Times (in 1992) First 12": I Wish U Heaven (in 1992) First CD: The Hits/The B-Sides (in 1993)

The first P CD I brought would have to be Sign O The Times. I remember buying it from Circuit City and coming home, getting it out of the wrapper, and playing its brilliance from tracks 1 to 16. I think it was the second time I fully appreciated his music and the first time I listened to a masterpiece from beginning to end and loved every bit of it. Ur kidding right? U don't own anything from 4U thru 1999????? PR around the time of release (my bro bought it actuallyand kept it. I repurchased, still on vinyl, about 3 years ago at a 2nd-hand store). I bought ATWIAD about a month after it came out, Parade and SOTT on the day of release. Some time in those years ('84-'86), I picked up Prince, 4U, Controversy, DM and 1999 (possibly, though not definitely in that order. The reason 1999 was late was that for some reason it was REALLY hard to find the double-album version in Sydney back then, Most places would only sell a craply shortened single-album vers.). These were all on vinyl. As I said I got Lovesexy, first CD, for my 17th b'day, so that would b June 13, '88. Black album I "obtained" twice, once at Camdem Market Jan. 1990, and once from my brother who bought it some time during '89. I think my bro bought Batman late in '89. GB and D&P I probably bought the day they came out, and Symbol definitely. Don't own the Hits (at least never bought it!!!). Come bought day of release in New York, August '94. Gold at HMV in Sydney (Pitt St) months after its release (around September '95?). C&D bought week of release in Switzerland (Bern I think) and Emancipation on day of release (November 17, 1997?) in Israel at a store called SuperZeus. Rave was given to me by a very disappointed friend who didn't want it, soon after its release. Bought CB (incl. KS and Truth) and NPS for a song at the 2001 Celly. TRC was "sent" me by a fellow orger since it could not be bought in Israel. I got my own copy on a visit to Oz in Dec. 2002! My Mum bought me ONA Live on a visit from Oz to Iz (May 2003?) and also Musicology on my next visit to Oz (May 2004?) - I see a pattern forming here! Never "bought" NEWS or The Vault. I think that covers it. Oh, wait a minute. It was my bro bought D&P, and I left it with him. I no longer own a copy (could never get motivated enuff to fork out for it, got quite a few alt. vers's on a boot). One more: bought the PR DVD for next to nothing when the SuperZeus store (where I had bought Emancipation) was having a closing down sale - in 2004, appropriately. Purple Rain on vinyl two weeks before it was released.
My mother bought me 1999 right before we went to see the movie. Boy, was the love scene uncomfortable. [Edited 3/6/06 1:44am] • Did you first think Prince was gay? •
Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.
