I wish there was. Yes darth vader does ruin it. I also like the tracks she loves me 4 me, last December, and the work.

I love The Rainbow Children and to be honest the voice doesnt really irritate me.
All the reviews ive read seem to be annoyed by it.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I've often wondered what prevented me from really loving this album and I guess it was that annoying voice on the recordings. As side from "The Work," "Last December" and "Everlasting Now" the voice just ruined the experience for me. sad .

Does anyone know why Prince thought the Darth Vader voice was a "good idea" ?

Hey! omg

My english isn't bad at all. It is my spelling that is the issue. Sometimes I mispell things that are taken as other words or I have to work around my spelling issue to try to say what it is I feel I want to say.

However, you all keep it up. I am enjoying the extra attention I been getting the past couple of days thanks biggrin

The voice isn't that of a darth vader. It is slowed down to sound deep and resounding.

I find the 'Darth Vader' Voice spoils the album because it dominates over the music. I remember being particularily pissed off that the voice spoke over some great guitar work on the title track. Instead of ramming the message of the album down everyone's throats, he should have let the music talk!!!

The voice will grow on you eventually. I love the album myself (obviously, by my username) and a very personal album for Prince and a great concept album, and his best album, IMHO, since Lovesexy.

as far as "concept album" goes, I couldn't agree more with you.

The version on One Nite Alone...Live! doesn't have the slowed down narrator voice. But if you're looking for a studio version, there's not one circulating.

I'll also agree with rainbowchild and MickG with the statement that the Rainbow Children is Prince's best concept album since Lovesexy.

Agreed.
I'm all about the music and quality of songs so "the voice" doesn't bother me as much as it does others.
I think it's his most musically interesting album since Lovesexy. Having a "hit" isn't the objective here and it shows which may explain some of the divide from "fans".
Bottom line for me, Top 5 fave P releases.

The voice is definitely the hardest thing to get your head round, which is a shame because the music is some of the finest prince has ever produced. If you listen enough, you will barely notice the voice, and see the album to be as great as it is.

I dont know what possessed prince to do the voice, its such a distraction. However its as he wanted it and i can respect that. For me it was such a relief to have a record like that, when I thought we were just going to get a record like High (a shitty throw-together of studio doodles).

The Rainbow Children followed by One Night Alone was Princes true return to form, not Musicology or 3121.

....love the album, always love the use of his various voices. for all the credit P gets for his writing, producing, playing, performing, etc....
i dont think he gets enough props for all the experimentation he has done with the human voice.

from recording his when he had a cold...to multi-layering his own voice....to playing it backwards...to all the different speeds he has used. from Camille to The Rainbow-Narrator. i love how he has a great voice all by itself, but then still plays around with what else can be done with it.

by no means do i think he is the only one to ever experiment with vocals, many many have before him. i just see that he has put a focus on it since his first album and does so to this day, yet rarely gets the proper respect for what he has done with the human voice as an instrument.

so, yes. i truly love the Rainbow-Narration as well as the album as a whole. say what you will about it, but i think it is the "Ultimate Prince." i mean, who else could ever come up with such a project, let alone release such an album, but he?

****gotta love what i am hearing about '3121!' sounds like he is F'n with that voice again!!****

The music on TRC is far more complex and advanced than anything
Prince has ever released. A mixture of jazz, funk,& rock r&b all fused
together...It is a concept album and Im glad he did it...
Many will look back years later and realize how awesome it is
while those of us who "get it" will be saying...."told ya so.."

Everybody's arguing about it, aren't they?
You should have seen the threads in '01!!!

Great Album!

I think what makes it great for me is all the passion Prince put into it.

I think that's what was missing for a looooong time before 'The Rainbow Children.'
