The REAL skinny on P Here's why I do not like his new direction: This is a guy who took adventure as a given course in how great art was created. You listen to the older songs and the adventure and fire just ignite your ears and soul. There is innovation up the ass and a marvelous sense that anything was possible, because it was. This is a guy who has the ability and equipment to do almost anything musically, but decides to do the kind of radio friendly stuff you here all the time. Why? He has already proven that you can be both adventurous and have hits, doesn't he realize that? I know he has little more to prove, but at least he could try to keep himself happy.
I say this thinking of the original Beautiful Strange song and how innovative and amazing that thing was, but what does he do? He re-records it and puts a lesser version of the song on the Music club. Why the fuck did he do that? Like he doesn't want his great stuff to exist--like he has some secret world he tries to keep private. With his access to keyboards and his strength as a musician, then why do such a minimal song such as Black Sweat? You have rappers who make hotter jams then this. In the old days this dude would kill everybody, now he barely beats Little Jon. Sure hoping he sees the light, or we are in for a world of hurting, and for many years to come. All you others say Hell Yea!!

y'know, you really ain't gotta stay stuck here, as if prince is forcing yo ass to listen to 'im. he's not. there's a shitload of other music and other artists to be listened to out there, if the brotha is "hurting" you this much. gotdayum...BPFS is a muthafucka. and a small reminder for those of you who will be tuning in who have similar feelings to the ones mentioned in the initial post: [Edited 2/20/06 18:24pm]

maybe those songs are to be released @ a certain time and now may not be it?
sure, i can say why doesen't prince release all those great tracks that i've never heard before (hence beautiful strange) but you know what? I WON'T. they're HIS tracks.i'm grateful for what's been put out there already. he already hinted at this with the C.B set and i trust his judgement when it comes to which songs come out now or later.(if at all that's ok with me too) i don't want my "Funk Palate" to be deadened.

I think Prince truly comes to life when he is performing his 80's hits. You watch him on the Rave video and just his whole aura comes to life with his more poppy numbers. Why does he continue to NOT want to be associated with "pop". I wish someone would tell him that THOSE songs are just as worthy as anything instrumental or more ROCK based, FUNK based, R&B based, PUNK based. He was GREAT when he was just being himself. Which is ironic seems as that was what most of his music was about in the first place. His music really used to have a "no frills" quality about it. Like if it wasn't needed then it wasn't going in. PRINCE had his own unique style yet now he seems to have gone as far away from it as possible. YET looks miserable and serious in the process. I wish someone would tell him how great he is and that he really should appreciate his own BACK CATALOGUE. It's like he wants to be disassociated from his more POPPY music. It annoys me because it's like he doesn't realise how great it is. Songs like Dirty Mind, Controversy or With You are about a million times better than songs that were more beautifully produced like Diamonds and Pearls or Cream. And now Black Sweat and Fury. What is HE singing about there exactly. I have no idea??? That's because these songs were about something REAL and they were songs with real feelings and emotion. It didn't matter that most of them sounded like demo recordings. People could truly relate to them. Someone should tell Prince this. It's like the guy is continually looking to prove that he is the master musician. When he already proved this years ago. Good music is music that comes from the heart, that people can relate to and people understand. It's not the polished music with everything sounding perfect and pretty. That has no heart. In the old days this dude would kill everybody, now he barely beats Little Jon. Sure hoping he sees the light, or we are in for a world of hurting, and for many years to come. There was plenty of experimental music from P from 2000-2002. Meaningful and urgent sounding...not made for the masses. He's back in a popular groove now, which is fine with me. If you're not into the sound of Musicology or 3121, there will surely be something different soon. Prince himself said that Musicology wasn't an album full of meaning or risk -- it was a pop album, no more and no less. I hear contradiction in a lot of what you're saying..."do something different," but then "he has all the musical equipment in the world and then puts out something minimalist like 'Black Sweat.'" Do you recall a song called "When Doves Cry"? I don't see 3121 as a real change of direction...more of a flushing out of ideas he started with Musicology. But hell, we haven't even heard the album yet, ya know? Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

i don't care for it, sure--but nonetheless, i'm still appreciative of the fact that he's still around, regardless of what i like and don't like. it's high time that you and others who suffer from the constant "he isn't doing what i want him to" jive-assery to at least do that, as opposed to constantly bitching.

"You don't have to be beautiful to turn me on..." Never a truer word been said! Refreshingly honest and when I hear most songs being about some sexy little 20 something...I think of this song . It's the sheer non-macho 13 year old school boy lyrics that I relate to ! Completely uninhibited and free. It makes me feel 16 again - I LOVE it ! BUT what I also want to say is that I couldn't care less if Prince never recorded another song again. How can even HE compete with his own classic ???!!!? Shut up already, damn.
