I really, really, really don't get all the hate for this DVD, aside from the spastic editing (and Cynthia's horrible off-key vocals on "Everyday People"). But whatta' ya' gonna' do?

One thing I've learned since joining this site is that none of us ever agree on ANYTHING (except maybe 'Joy in Repetition').

yeah, that's the cool thing about prince's work - it's like a big rorschach test. we all see something different in it.

One of the reasons why I can't stand this dvd is that it has such a contrived and forced feel to it. Prince is not in the mood one bit and it shows. No inspiration, no vibe, just shallow and totally staged. Definitely the lowest point in his career and I think he realised luckily and hence got back to basics with the ONA tour. I've been a fan since 83 and watching live concerts and after shows since 86. Compare this to the raw and real experience of the Syracuse show, Parade or SOTT or Lovesexy shows and Rave comes no where close. One thing that pisses me off though - the aladdin performance, though far better than Rave, did not do the tour justice at all!! Why does one of the greatest live performers ever insist on releasing poor live material??? Will some please explain this to me??!! Man, just let someone record one of your entire shows and release it as is - with no editing!!!

The Concert DVD (Rave) had a more uptempo feel than the Live at the ALaddin DVD concert.

Aladdin sounds very Vegas and Rave sounds more spontaneous (although the preachiness of Purple Rain can become annoying on some listens).

That describes the whole "Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic" era. Why was he even bothering, that year? His whole attitude about the music biz was bitter, the whole release of "Rave" lacked heart and passion, and just seemed a calculated aim at scoring a "hit" without the goods to make a hit album- most obiviously, using the "guest stars" on the cd sticker, then making their contributions almost unaudiable. I can't believe his judgement: a cover of "Everyday's a Winding Road"? You're Prince, dammit!!

The album cover for "Rave" and the dvd cover for "Rave 2000" were embarassing;those photos and the blue suit were almost a cry for help.

It's hard to believe that the man responsible for the "Sign 0' the Times" concert film also created "Rave 2000".

Maybe his child's death and failing marriage were very much responsiblefor his mindset and output. It's years like 1999 where he would have been better off releasing a vault album like "Roadhouse Garden". In any event, I agree with that person that said it's a crummy video from a crummy era. Unlistenable. Unwatchable. It's okay to be negative about Rave; he recovered for "Rainbow Children" and afterward. He's back on track.

He looks SO MISERABLE in the interviews. I wanted to put my hands through the screen and give him a hug. Most of the way through the entire concert he looked like he was really emotional but holding it all in.

Plus I din't feel comfortable watching him perform with Lenny K. IT was like he was idolising him. And I just kept thinking -- BUT YOUR PRINCE..LENNY USED TO IDOLISE YOU !!!

One of the only bits when he seems to genuinely smile is when he is being carried through the crowd, and ALL I keep thinking is this bloke seems to longing for some genuine affection. Someone who he can relate to.

It's like he is continually putting on an act with those guys he's performing with. "Hey, I'm Prince...I'm cool!"
Shut up already, damn.

That's the saddest statement I've ever read. Ever.

Rave Un2 the Year 2000 is my absolute least favorite Prince performance ever. And this is coming from a 20+ year fan. Horrible. Horrible. Godawful. Horrible.

Well keep in mind i have only seen a few live shows. Rave un2, live at the aladdin and lovesexy dortmund. The aladdin show is an absolute pile of crap! And lovesexy is good, but it's pretty borin to watch and alot better to listen to. And im sure there are much better shows than rave, but it's a cool show to watch!!

Of ANY career, to be honest. Someone who mentioned ripping the audio for the music; that is the only way to enjoy the concert. Watching it is like having your pubes waxed.

at least with getting your pubes waxed, you feel kinda sexy when the pain wears off.

My butt itches right after Morris swings onto the stage in that video...does that count?

I'm enough of a fan to generally be jazzed about any chance to see him perform live. But I agree that the energy, passion and immediacy that's usually evident in Prince performances was somewhat lacking for me here.

I like Purple House Medley, SAIMH and the afore-mentioned bass duet and a few other cool moments, but I mostly have to keep the remote handy to fast forward. The end is totally unwatchable with the bad edit of TGRES and 1999 was horrible considering it was to be the last time he performed it. Just like preferring a closed casket to a bad makeup job by the undertaker I'd rather keep better memories in mind than have that travesty as the last taste in my mouth.

Maybe part of what makes it bad is that, having heard accounts from those who were there, I realize how much was edited out. I know the crowd was in somewhat of a bad mood because they had nigh frozen to death waiting to get in, there were more industry types there by invite than fans there for the love of the music, and the whole thing was taped in advance. Damn internet! mad lol
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

It's brilliant. I think the Muppets are Prince's spiritual home.

When they sing Delrious to him my heart swells.

Prince seems to love it !

I turned several people OFF from Prince permanently by showing this shitty performance to them. I hadn't watched it yet myself, which was where it all went wrong. Morris swinging in? The tiny, ambivalent crowd? The shitty editing? The fake banter between Prince and the Time? Those fucking children on stage at the end? I'd rather have Kirky J. step on my nuts than watch it again...

Well, he does have a very valid point! The Lovesexy tour is really rather popular with Prince fans, especially those of us who were there, and the Aladdin show was for me the best tour since then. It is in fact the exact antithesis to Rave, as in it he is mature, humorous, cool, with a great band, concentrating on his musicianship. In Rave he was a sad, try-hard, with a naff band desperate to still be a pop star instead of acting his age. Horrible, really, really horrible.

Unfortunately some of my non-Prince fan friends/bandmates saw this on TV, and never again believed anthing I said about how great he is live.

This is exactly how I feel. With the Lovesexy concert you CAN'T take your eyes off Prince. Everything is right. The band, the clothes, Cat, Sheila E, The message, the music...

Yet Rave everything felt disjointed and like they all wanted to be taken as "serious musicians". There's still some good bits but you get the feeling Prince isn't quite sure who he is or who he wants to be.
Shut up already, damn.

also, the aladdin video is utter crap on a technical level, but the actual performance sweeps the floor with the RAVE show.
