27 & 27 =54! I was 27 the first time that I heard Prince. Now 27 years have gone by. That makes me almost 54!
My friend played the "Prince" album at her party and I was hooked for life. So I can't say I go back to the very beginning which would have been the "For You" album, but damn near all the way back. Anyway I have now been a Prince person all of his career, and half of my own life now. But what fascinates me is how many of you are lifelong Prince "fans" that discovered him when you were itty bitty people. I was already a grown-ass women at 27, but most of you were just little guys. That must have been so cool, such an experience to hear Prince when you were just little kids. I am interested in your first impressions and how it shaped you to grow up with Prince?!! | |

Got you beat, but not by age, but by timeframe. But I am sure there are more out there that have listened to, or known of, Prince longer than I have.
I'm 35, almost 36, and in 1982 in seventh grade, when I was 11, almost 12, in elementary/middle school, we had a show-and-tell music day. Think of it has culture day. It was spring of 1982 I believe and my old grade school friend Brendan brought in "1999." That was the first time I knew and started listening to Prince. We were asked to play a track or two of the vinyl records. Oh, and mind you, this was catholic grade school and the school was teaming with nuns. So, that's roughly over 2/3 of my life I have listened to Prince and followed him through his musical journey. And what did I bring to show-and-tell that day? Jimmy Buffet, Volcano, released in 1979. It was my parents' record, not mine. The show-and-tell day was also an art class and we had to reproduce the album cover. Another friend got off easy. Greg brought in The White Album by The Beatles. This is so similar to my story, it's scary! I'm one year younger, and the person who brought the LP in was our music teacher, but all other info is the same! (Even the Catholic school part!) We performed 1999 (the song) for our 6th-grade talent show. The girls took one part, then the boys, then everyone together. After that I was hooked. |

Love your avatar. That's the poster I have on my wall. I'm mid 40s so I remember liking Prince all the way back to soft and wet. I became a die-hard with International Lover, so that's 24 Prince loving years. 
On topic, I certainly infected my 2 kids with the Prince bug, so I wonder how many of the youngsters first loved Prince because of their parents? As for how growing up with Prince has shaped my kids? They both love his music. My oldest wants to be a musician and my youngest wants to go into the ministry. My musician will tell you that Prince is one of his main influences, even though he's of the hip hop generation. My youngest is the one who asked questions about Prince's spiritual nature and religious views. Good topic. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. | |

Well, having the 1999 album throughout puberty was interesting, to say the least. In middle school, we could play whatever music we wanted during lunch time on the stereo they had in the cafeteria. "Darling Nikki" was played almost every day. And being that Prince has always been his own person doing his own thing, it gave me confidence to not give in to what everyone else was doing and stay true to myself.

juuust kiddding!! I love reading these story's i find them intresting. I'm such young fan. Only became a fan in 2004. I of course knew of his music, but i didnt really start checking it ALL out. now i'm hooked consider him fav. musicain and in those 2 years have got 29 different prince albums. LOL. | |

I was in my early twenties when I discovered Prince. No one else knew about him around me at the beginning, then the 1999/LRC videos became a staple on music video shows. By PR, it was wall to wall Prince and even I got a little sick of the whole act. But then there were those three great left-field records that washed away the excesses of the big Purple Rain hypefest. | |

I also discovered "Our Man" at the age of nine and I'm now 34. So, I've also grown up with Prince and the journey so far has been a great one to take. This journey has taken me through living in three different states, through a terrible marriage, through the birth of my son and all the other highs and lows that we've all experienced in our lives. Through it all, I could always put on "I Would Die 4 U," "Purple Rain," "When U Love Somebody," or "Do Me Baby" and know that the Prince music that I loved could somehow explain it all. His music is spiritual, unique and he makes it just for me and U.

I love hearing all the stories too, from young old and in between. We all have our own unique stories to tell. I am SO without friends who dig Prince and always have been.  But hey, that is their loss! I don't even worry about it. I am known as "the Prince Fan" by everyone that knows me and I like it just fine. | |

Tell us more about your experiences, CherryCherry. I seem to be the Grandmamma here. The elder spokeswoman perhaps. I have listened to Prince music almost everyday of my 27 years of fanship/famship. I have my MP3 player loaded up with Prince and take it to work with me everyday. It helps me keep the funk up in my head and ignore my boring job. This post was like a cold hard slap in the face. I too have been listening to Prince for 27 years the difference is I started when I was 24 so its more like 27 + 24 = 51. Thats a long time to be so loyal to a musician's output. Its bordering on obsession. I don't like to think of it in such a long strecth of time. Seems like just yesterday I was so embarrassed by some of the lyrics from Lets Pretend We're Married.

9 + 27 = 36!
I was at the wee age of 9 when I first heard Soft and Wet on the radio. Didn't know who it was, as it wasn't until I Wanna Be Your Lover came out that I knew who Prince was. Basically, Prince was for me what the Beatles and Elvis were to the previous generation. I've always felt lucky that I grew up listening to people like Santana, Earth Wind & Fire, Diana Ross, the Jackson 5, and countless other incredible artists, but Prince has been my most enjoyable addiction. | |
