oh, yeah, poor Bert, ever so easily forgotten as o+>. although, I do have to say, I would like to hear Bert's original version of TRC he had locked in the vault.

I think this could be true. Only because of the music he HAS released since being free. Definitely not the best of the vault IMO.

Just glancing over my stack of bootlegs, i could probabbly count a couple hundred unreleased songs. This includes outtakes, demos, remixes, etc.

In that respect im sure something akin to "The Vault" exists. I don't know how much else exists beyond what is available as bootlegs tho. Prince did drop a couple suprises on the Crystal Ball, and WB did as well on that "Old Friends 4 Sale" album. So who knows for sure.

Myths are delicious, they give us something to 'cling to'. If the grooves and grooves are up on the shelf, great! If not, Prince's head is probably full of them . I think it was The Duke or some other Jazz musician who wrote over 2000 songs, so it is entirely possible Prince is working on that.

I've been sayin this all along!
He is a lousy businessman
ONA is proof for me.
Although the tracks are beautiful
It's obvious half are unfinished!
He ment well but it's half hearted.
The "Truth" is a much more complete package.
But we still get more sounds from him than
any other fan get's from their Artist.
We all want a big hit again because
we want to relive the Hysteria & Pandemonium we experienced
when Purple Rain was Hot. Actually, he doesn't care if it happens again or not.

Here's my 2 cents. Now that Prince is free from Warner Brothers he is free to release any music or is he? Maybe there is still a problem with Warner Brothers! Otherwise Prince should definitely release this music. Also if he continues to not make any new fans by putting out stuff that is not Commercial what will become of him. Some older fans are lost and he may lose more fans . Older people don't spend money on music like younger people. He will just have Old Faces to look at when he performs because the younger ones won't be listening anymore. It's time to get wild! Bible Class is over unless he's going Gospel and then he'll really limit fans even more. I for one don't want to be with older people like at this Celebration that were Smelling and Farting. It is so Gross! And some woman next to me smelled like they had their period !!. It was So disgusting. This is America Bath for goodness Sake. What Gross Slobs. Ugh! I think these people had no idea how much they stunk up Prince's show while Maceo was on. Prince this is why I made some weird faces and I seriously hope you eliminate losers like this from your shows. Please make it more Private and Select. Don't make me have to Endure these Gross kind of people at your shows anymore. I love you and these people ruined my enjoyment a bit.

Hearsay, hearsay.

How do you all know whether or not some of the songs we're hearing now aren't "vault" tracks?

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic started off with a well known vault track. Whose to say that some of the other songs on that cd weren't also vault tracks that no one had heard before? You don't know, I don't know. We're mostly just speculating based on general comments that Prince has made and a lot of unauthorized information that's floating around.

Furthermore, just because Prince has a song doesn't mean he necessarily wants to release it. Haven't you all ever written something that you didn't want anyone else to see?

People on the "Uptown" staff do great work, but they aren't the final authority on everything that Prince has created. You all should keep that in mind when you're reading these various unauthorized sources of information.

It would be nice to know for further speculation wink

Well I asked Prince in a dream a while ago
why he doesn't release the vault tracks
and he said--" why should I ?" "I've got
so much newer stuff ".

This is a true dream--and my dreams ALWAYS
are reality based when it comes to him.

I hope we all get to hear the REALLY erotic Prince lp he mentioned to Kurt Loder...

I don't doubt that there is an actual "Vault" . . there has to be because so many people have seen it, and he has shown the picture of it many times!!

What I question is WHAT is in the Vault. I don't believe that there are 1000 songs . . I don't even believe that there are 500. Let me tell you why I feel this way:

1) Prince fought for his musical freedom, mainly to be able to release as much music as he could. If the Vault truly contained dozens of finished albums, he could've released ANY of them in the last 5 years!!! Instead we got NPS and Rave.

2) I myself have heard alternate (finished) versions of at least 100 Prince songs. Do these count as "unreleased"? Meaning, if there are 5 versions of "Dolphin", does that add to the infamous "500 songs" figure?

BUT . . please don't get me wrong. I DO hope that it exists, and is fully stocked with incredible unheard music!!! I just doubt that it is.

I'm sticking with him for the long haul anyway, so I'll just have to wait and see!!

There is a vault and it is vast. However, there's little in there that would be of interest to anyone other than diehard fans, and he's certainly not sitting on anything that would chart. We've all heard enough of it to know this. He's always known when he's had a great one and released it immediately. There's no proof to the contrary.

The overwhelming majority of what's in there is still there for a reason. It's either not good enough to release or it doesn't work on the record he's compiling. In my opinion he's actually doing the right thing by exercising this discretion on what gets officially released.

eye garuntee prince has a great number of songs in his "vault".. but most are so outdated sounding and unfinished, thats why most of that crap u heard in the first year was remade.. like Sadomasachistic Groove, Hypno Paradise, Van Gough, When Eye Lay My Hands on U..the only finished one that was considered old was splash.. and a few others..

Here's a riddle folks: what archival album was released by Prince with great fanfare, and subsequently bashed by "all the critics in NY?" I'll give you three guesses and the first two are wrong -- you got it Graffiti Bridge.

Why would Prince do another Graffiti Bridge, isn't one bomb enough? I was shocked to learn that most of the material released on this album was actually created over an approximate two decade time frame!

Prince really only has himself as competition, and in the larger scheme of things I believe that when he compiles a record and some of the 'children' are stillborn -- then those outtakes really don't have the strength of the songs that see the light of day... if possible take a listen to "Tick, Tick, Bang!" as it was originally recorded back in the time frame of Controversy and then listen to the final released version -- which was much better with whatever tweaks Prince did to the song.

So I don't believe there is any MOTIVATION for him to release an album or seven that is mainly comprised of outtakes and such.

the original version of tick tick bang would have been great as a dirtymind or controversy track or b-side.
i usually like the originals better as in "we can funk"
"old friend 4 sale"etc.

Not totally imho. He had to see fan activity on sites praising works as Anna Stesia, Dot Parker etc to realize when he has certain special songs. He would have let then rot away or be forgotten. I think because its coming from him that he doesnt realize the potential of certain songs that are greater than he thinks they are. Think of it as having someone else besides yourself editiing or proofreading your paperwork..another lookover by someone outside of yourself sometimes helps with perspectives etc.

The overwhelming majority of what's in there is still there for a reason. It's either not good enough to release or it doesn't work on the record he's compiling. In my opinion he's actually doing the right thing by exercising this discretion on what gets officially released.

Prince is stingy ...he keeps good songs to himself..its weird. He feels some songs are too good to just be released. He said so in an interview..instead of showing the world his greatnesss he keeps it to himself--go figure.

I think JonnyBoyRebel is a myth! lol.

Didn't Prince finance the Gold tour with a loan he procured from a bank with 250 unreleased songs as colateral? I seem to remember reading that in the Star Trib. I would think he would have to have those songs in order to use them as colateral. Right??

Interesting topic...

Although The Vault itself is by no means a myth I do wonder if the amazing depth of number and quality exists or if we haven't heard 99% of it on bootlegs by now?

Undoubtedly Crystal Ball didn't offer the total cream of the crop over three jampacked optimum value for money CDs and Warner Bros calling their release "The Vault" is surely a diss. Even though aside from "Little Pill" everything is with some merit.

Femi and Joe, Prince's engineers said at the celebration that the vault definetely exists. Furthermore he stated that Prince is working every day in the studio when he is not touring and even that he is often recording in other studios with Femi.

Femi also mentioned that he never gets more than 5 hours of sleep, during the celebration it was even less. His engineers seem to have a hard working schedule but both Femi and Joe said it was worth putting up with it, because they were able to be part of an amazing work process, listening to some great music.

Femi also said that there are many tapes existing with guest musicians and that there is some amazing stuff in the vault which might never hit the record stores.

During the listening sessions we were listening to two live cd's, ONA and It Ain't Over. Asked when and if they would be released Femi replied that he does not know because Prince might change his mind about a release any time.

In the work shop with Eric Leeds, Eric said that the first Madhouse album was written in 3 days solely by him and Prince.

Still one could argue that these informations handed out by his engineers and musicians are just part of building a myth I don't think so. Being at the celebration one could see that Prince is about music and that is what he seems to spent all his time with.

Finally Femi stated that Prince is rarely renting the studio out any more because he really enjoys working at the Park all by himself not being bothered by other musicians and having free access to the studios all the time.

Personally I think that producing music allmost every day one looses track about all the work you have done and secondly you just might not be interested in your old stuff any more.

Probably there's a lot more, but is it interesting material, Prince wrote damn good song, which he never released. Most of the unreleased outtakes are way better then he released officially over the last few years, but a lot of stuff ain't interesting at all. In my opinion did he lost the touch for good material after 1994/1995. The gold priod was the last real good show and the period with the real nice material he's wrote, but hey, it's only me saying this.

I agree and disagree. Emancipation had a lot of creative ideas on it. I wish he would've gone all out on disc three and just made it house all the way through, on the other hand the production was weak and it was obvious he was straining to be more "current". All those love songs for Mayte were as lame then as they are depressing now. In the long run I think the real prolific originality ended in 1988. Lovesexy was the end of Princes' real "genius" material, and I wouldn't mind owning every unreleased track up till that point. I think that what was left off the albums after that was probably for the best (with a few exceptions ie 200 Ballons).

I've always felt that Prince was so preoccupied with directing and starring in 'GB' that he didn't really have the time to make a truly great soundtrack album. So,he went into the vaults and pulled out a bunch of old songs ("Tick Tick Bang" was originally recorded in 1981..."We Can Funk","Can't Stop..." and "Joy In Repetition" were all from 1986...etc).As a result, the album feels a little scattered and less cohesive than his other movie soundtracks.

I don't get it people. You are speaking about the Vault but without mentioning the Turn it Up book where a whole lot of tracks are mentioned (some released on bootlegs, some never heard by anyone). The Vault excists! And to prove again that there's a lot going around on bootlegs, here's my tracklisting of 28 cd-r outtake collection, missing: only 15 tracks that are mentioned in the Turn it Up book.

I don't doubt that the vault actually exists. Just imagine what is in there: perfect versions of all the known bootleggs, definitely more songs we don't know of, recordings of almost any performance/concert (at least from the last couple of years), rehearsal recordings, etc...

Femi, Prince's engineer, verified the existence of the Vault and the tons of songs in it. I spoke with him at Xenophobia. He was a wealth of knowledge. Thatis good enough for me when I consider the loser groupies that post their unproven comments on this site.
