Paul Weller on Prince

This should really be on the backstage at the brits thread but I can't find a link to post a reply but did anyone see the bit where Kate thornton spoke to Paul Weller? She mentioned Prince being there and he looked like he had a bad
smell under his nose and said 'which one?' Evidently not a fan then!

Probably jealous of Prince's ability to grow old gracefully (physically and artistically). Weller, much as I love The Jam, is looking increasingly like a joke and turning out moribund nonsense masquerading as "elder statesman" rock.

And Kate won neither of the awards she was nominated for. A crime.

Poor Paul. It's got to hurt to be upstaged on every account when it's supposed to be your night as the "legend" on display.

If anyone wants a real laugh, check out Mr Weller's attempts at sounding 'soulful' with the Style Council. The man's as funky as Billy Ray Cyrus on heroin. As for his performance at the Brits, even ardent Jam fans needed smelling salts to revive them by the time he'd finished his self-indulgent and meandering noodlings.

It was a disgrace that Kate Bush won neither Best Female nor Album. Both should have been hers for the taking. I am ashamed to come from the same country as Coldplay. Sad, whinging music for sad, whinging people.

Well, Paul Weller is very working class, probably feels offended by Prince's diva-esque goings on!

Paul Weller is an asshole, he put David Bowie down in the music magazine NME and said he's only ever written 3 good songs, so it's no suprise he doesn't like Prince as well, as it's obvious Paul Weller doesn't like genius because he's not one.

I agree totally. He was just pissed at Prince because when he received his lifetime achievement award, he was supposed to bring the house down with a finale of his 'hits'. His utterly amateurish performance, in which he tried to play loud to hide the shite songwriting paled in significance compared to Prince's opening....And he Knew it!!!!

Weller slams music legends
From World Entertainment News Network
February 04, 2006

Veteran rocker PAUL WELLER has lashed out at past winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Brit Awards - just two weeks before he receives the prestigious honour.

THE JAM star - who has already launched a scathing attack on singer/songwriter JAMES BLUNT - questions the merit of previously presenting the award to SIR BOB GELDOF, because the former BOOMTOWN RAT achieved international fame for his charity work.

He says, "Bob Geldof. What did he win it for? Can't be for his music, man. I mean, if it's for his charity work in Africa then you can't knock it, but Boomtown Rats, f**k off."

And the 47-year-old has little time for ex-THE POLICE singer STING either: "F**king horrible man. Not my cup of tea at all. F**king rubbish. No edge, no attitude, no nothing."

Late QUEEN frontman FREDDIE MERCURY, who died of AIDS in 1991, fares little better: "He said he wanted to bring ballet to the working classes. What a c**t."

Weller is scheduled to perform a selection of his hits at the 15 February (06) British music industry ceremony in London.

The more I hear about the guy the more i want to burn his greatest hits album that i bought out of desperation for new music (stupid i know). He is nothing more that a bitter old talentless musician. He doesn't deserve to breath in the direction of all the greats he has slated.

i can't speak for weller but i have had mixes with brit pop, simplistic rock types with their basic rhythms and chords who think they have the monolopy on pop/rock public opinion-leanings at grass root level (there you go weller fans - us prince fans living on glamour rock/funk - FUCK x 17 YOU!!!!)

ive heard all weller albums since going solo, one step above chas'n'dave but lets forget he's cool - posing with Gallagher. Easy way to write Weller songs. use root note to minor third and in a random way (lyrics are urban abstract - youll get the feel.....be on the dole, labour forgeting their roots.. blah blah) with slight distortion on guitar, and have Ocean Colour Scenes guitarist in background, and no reverb on anything. There you go.... another album - really cutting edge.

To weller, any guitar phrase that has 4 semiquavers in it is a rock god and is out of touch with the people.

His stuff with the style council shows he is diverse and soulful (which most of it i like), but stanley road onwards - pleasing the brit pop/rock crowd.

I mean, I see his point about Geldof, who obviously wins for his charity work and not the music. I also think James Blunt is barf Also not a fan of Sting, as he's so played out IMO. lol

But Freddie! disbelief How can he speak ill of Freddie? mad

Just watched MTV Backstage at the Brits and the presenter was asking all the nominees whether they would be having the beef or the nut cutlets to eat. Then she said that Paul Weller would be having beef cos he seemed to have beef with most people LOL lol
