Diamond is 10 million + in sales. None of prince albums has been considered "Diamond" because it was just established in the 90's when Mariah Cary was at her peak. Purple Rain sold somewhere around 15 million but back than it was just platinum status.

Diamond means that an album has shipped 10 million units (albums) or more. "Purple Rain" released in 1984, was on May 6, 1996 certified 13x's platinum according to the RIAA. Purple Rain has 1 diamond certification.

"Purple Rain" is also the 35th biggest selling U.S. album in history.

"Purple Rain" is a pop icon that will be remembered as Prince's most celebrated album, much like Michael Jackson will be forever know for "Thriller"

Furthermore,

You may be correct in your assertions that "Purple Rain" has since 1996 sold more than 2-3 million more copies and should be certified at 14 or 15 times. However, it is solely up to the record company that released and still owns the rights to that album to request such a certification.
