What the hell is going on with this thread?
Are you serious Jerky? I've watched it umpteen times now, and it's perfectly obvious that it's live. Prince is actually slightly under pitch when he sings the first line ("42 thousand feet above the sea"). Even if he was miming (which he isn't), there is no way in hell he would mime to an out of tune recording! Maybe there is an audio sync problem with your copy? I haven't seen this clip but from all that I've read IT IS possible that he lip synched Te Amo. Here are my reasons why:
1) If Wendy and Lisa were performing with Prince; IT IS possible that they just couldn't get the chords to "Te Amo" down packed in the short amount of time they had to rehearse. In other words MAYBE THE BAND DIDN"T KNOW THE SONG. 2) Perhaps Prince was "told" by the record company to perform "Te Amo" to promote the single. MAYBE THIS IS WHY IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR HIM TO PERFORM THIS SONG AS OPPOSED TO PICKING ONE OF MANY OTHERS. 3) It's said that while he was in London he went into a studio to do some recording. I noticed no one said if Wendy, Lisa, Sheila or anyone joined him. PERHAPS HE RECORDED THIS VERSION OF "TE AMO" PLAYING ALL INSTRUMENTS HIMSELF. (which would also explain why the song sounded a bit out of tune, or like it hadn't been rehearsed enough (kinda reminded me of some of the stuff from First Ave. 1986) 4) Yall need to stop acting like Prince is the God of live performances (although he is ). Let us not forget his performance of "Pussy Control" on the VH 1 Fashion awards, 100% Lip Synched, even the bands music was pre recorded. Sometimes Lip Synching happens, and it happens for good reason. We all know Prince can sing and play the hell outta any instrument.(Unlike Ashley Simpson who can only sing in a studio with her voice being run through a harmonizer Midi system). Maybe this was just something that HAD to be done. And we still have to give the man props anyway for NOT just turning on the CD. He still gave us a live "version" of the song. And the rest of the performance WAS all the way LIVE! My name is Prince and I want your money

Payt said: Jerky said: The first song was a pre-recorded 'Live' version that was recorded in London with the band. Prince lip-synched this, all the rest was live singing. It's very doubtful that any instrument apart from Sheila's drums and his guitar were live at all. His last Brits performance {7 years ago} was live singing but the band were pre-recorded. This is quite common with awards ceremonies. You obviously have no clue what you're talking about..lol.. Doing the drums live over a track sans rhytm? Well, it can be done ofcourse, but you'd need a clicktrack to play to for the drummer. Using of these requires the drummer to wear headphones so she can hear the clicktrack and drum to it's beat. Especially in this kind of song when there are many (live) guitar breaks etc. it would be too risky, if not possible. As for Prince's vocals.. the difference between a prerecorded vocal and a live one would be too obvious, and in Prince' case useless. In that respect it would make more sense to either do the whole thing either live or prerecorded.
Rest assured that this was all live Exactly!!!! BTW Payt, It was probably a hired man who controlled the separate Linn Drum tracks (and other taped material like backround voices etc.) in Lovesexy- tour(remember our discussion about Bob George). That's how the background tape could still leave room for improvisation. In that particular Dutch(?) gig you could see that happen in several songs and jams [Edited 2/18/06 6:47am] "Hypocrisy is the act of pretending to have morals or virtues that one does not truly possess or practice."

In other words MAYBE THE BAND DIDN"T KNOW THE SONG. But if that were so, it would also apply to Fury as well. Why lipsynch one but not the other? And if that were the problem, why would that mean Prince would need to lypsynch? It doesn't make any sense. 2) Perhaps Prince was "told" by the record company to perform "Te Amo" to promote the single. MAYBE THIS IS WHY IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR HIM TO PERFORM THIS SONG AS OPPOSED TO PICKING ONE OF MANY OTHERS.
Why? Firstly, I seriously doubt Universal 'tell' Prince to do anything, and secondly, Te Amo Corazon was never released as a single in the UK, so why promote something you can't buy and isn't on the radio. It looks more likely that Black Sweat will be the first single release from 3121 as far as the UK is concerned.
1986) Anything's possible. But again, this doesn't really add up. Why bother with that particular song? If backing tracks were recorded and used, then the vocals would be the ONE thing that would've been done live on the night. Having the vocals pre-recorded but guitar and drums live is just ludicrous (and virtually impossible to execute). 4) Yall need to stop acting like Prince is the God of live performances (although he is ). Let us not forget his performance of "Pussy Control" on the VH 1 Fashion awards, 100% Lip Synched, even the bands music was pre recorded.
No ones denying that Prince has lipsynched certain performances before, but in EVERY case, the entire song is pre-recorded or he sings live over a pre-recorded backing track. Plus, if you watch any of his lipsynched performances, it's quite obvious when he does it. He really is very bad at it!
Again, I and most people here are not denying that lipsynching happens for various reasons. But in this occasion it's a ridiculous assumption. There are only 2 possibilities when it comes to lipsynching practically speaking. 1. The entire track is pre-recorded and mimed to 2. A backing track is used, and the lead vocals (and maybe lead guitar) is sung/played live over the top. Any other option is too difficult and frought with technical problems to realistically be viable. If anything's gonna be live, it's gonna be the vocals. To play pre-recorded vocals along to an otherwise live performance is very very difficult, and would require the use of a click track to keep it all in synch. Cora is clearly not wearing headphones in this performance so this theory can be confidently dismissed.

I'm sorry, I laughed at that comment... I was able to work out the chords to "Te Amo" only minutes after listening to it. Surely professional musicians like Wendy & Lisa would have no trouble learning it. I'm not saying it does "sound that great", in fact, I think the performance of "Te Amo" was pretty lame - but that just adds more evidence to the fact that it's live. Why would he mime to a crap version? FanofDaFascist said: If anything "Fury" seems like a much simpler song to learn and play

Like I said, anyone with any knowledge of sound recording or live mixing will tell you this whole premise of Prince lipsynching his vocals over a live track is just stupid. It's 100's of times more difficult to do, and prone to way more serious problems than just singing it live... the whole idea is just nonsensical. [Edited 2/18/06 17:49pm]

2) Perhaps Prince was "told" by the record company to perform "Te Amo" to promote the single. MAYBE THIS IS WHY IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR HIM TO PERFORM THIS SONG AS OPPOSED TO PICKING ONE OF MANY OTHERS.
For the record, I've seen Prince lip-synch, it ain't pretty! What I witnessed the other day was absolutely beautiful. Therefore, no lip-synching involved! [Edited 2/18/06 18:57pm]

He was hardly lip syncing Sad that people cant tell he is actually singing Te Amo - very simple Come on!! I don't know man! Check the tape again. He seems to be mimimng (very well) to 'Te Amo Corazon' and then before he sings 'Fury' fixes the mic and the real vocal kicks in. For a medley of songs like this at a huge technical live programme with many bands and set-ups.... it would be very difficult to mix such a quiet song and then change everything for the rockers. I believe the first song is synched as it would have been too risky to have a sound fluff on such an important occasion. look again, he signals the sound guy before 'Fury' I don't see how you can think it was lip-synched. It sounded nothing like a studio recording. And as somone mentioned, he was some what under pitch at the start.
