Beautiful, Loved And Blessed - Discuss the *SONG* here

[Discuss Beautiful, Loved and Blessed here. All other threads will be locked and redirected here]

Aight folks....The other threads were full of requests to hear the new song. Due to legal concerns we have had to lock those threads up and start anew.

Please, we can not publically ask for boots on this website. This thread should only be used for discussion of the song:
Do you like it? Hate it? In the middle?

heres my take:

aight..both songs are nice. but once again prince fails to deliver a memorable melody or chorus...

these songs are great to listen to the first five to ten times but without a melody or catching chorus to hook you in this stuff will become a bore to our ears...

Beautiful, Loved And Blessed has a nice melody..but then prince rushes the same sounding (chorus is it?) that he has resorted to for the last decade. confused .where asking you from the darkness i must confesss part..whatever that is..

thus far Beautiful, Loved And Blessed is better sounding to my ears. buy watch, live Musicology people will love this stuff and then after six months have no desire to listen to any of this again..i hope these songs dont reflect the entire album...

I haven't heard "Beautiful" yet...But that "Black Sweat" is pretty damn funky...in a '80s "Kiss" meets 2006 swagger...very suprising to say the least...

It's not a song that's going to change the world, but I think it's very nice. A pretty song; I really like it. It will probably be very nice to drive around to this spring.

Tamar has a good voice, I can't wait to hear more from her!

I think its a cut above anything on musicology. Not brilliant but OK, I kinda like it. Parts of it sound a little like a laid back version of "Acknowledge Me".

Nice.

It has an attractive melody. I think there is a hook line.

I enjoyed it.

Really? I think it's a step down. Very forumulaic and I can't say I'm sold on Tamar's talent yet.

I like BLB better than BS. It's a very memerable song in my opinion. that's what love about this site, sooooo many different musicle tastes. I use 2 let the abundance of negitive reviews bother me. don't know why i was trippin. I do think that the vast majority of the fans will feel positive about this more recent output by Prince. Both songs are better than most if not all the songs on musicology. even TAC is starting to make more sense now.

It's a nice song with a cool groove. There's nothing to really dislike about the song (unless the religious references turn you off). But I don't love it.

BS is easily the better song, imo.

I actually think they push this song towards the gospel market. I know that sounds odd BUT I think they should let it catch fire there and then push the cross-over to R&B radio (Like MaryMary) I know Tamar isn't a gospel artist BUT.....I think they need to be creative in the promotion of this song.

I think its cute and I like how prince and tamar sound together.

I think Prince believes his latter will be greater than the former...

you never know smile

I could care less about Tamar too - singers are a dime a dozen and they all sound more or less the same these days, just another one off the production line.

Yes, the song is formulaic alright. I just think it works, for what it is, better than the Musicology stuff. Personally, I'd rather see Prince continue in the direction he starting moving in with TRC but it doesn't seem like that's gonna happen anytime soon. In the meantime he's playing it safe and drawing upon some of the sounds and compositional techniques the he knows worked in the past and giving them a contemporary twist in the hope of scoring a hit or two. As far as that goes, he's done OK.

BEAUTIFUL, LOVED & BLESSED:
A nice soulful mid tempo tune...not diggin the beat too much sounds like an update of a familiar drum loop in fact its pretty much the beat from COME ON off of New Power Soul...the verses kinda make me yawn...tamar sings the first verse...prince sings the 2nd verse..and they both do add libs as the tune continues...theres a "SORTA" rap in the middle section by Tamar...

Highlights:
at 4:30 we get some prince funk...the guitars are nasty !!! think the end of illusion coma pimp circumstance....but better !!! funky ass guitar and popping bass !!! this saves the song for me...
not exactly my kinda thing but for the groove at the end its worth it !!!

The song is OK. If it was on Prince's album I'd be a bit more disappointed, but since its not - its on Tamar's - I'm a bit more open to it. The first 3 mins of the song are kinda boring, but around the 3:20 mark, it starts to pickup. Too bad the whole song doesn't have this kind of energy.

Here in the Bay Area, it sounds like something that could easily be played on 98.1 or 102.9.

I conclude from your post that you are suggesting that the 'Musicology' album did not have any memorable choruses or hooks.

'Call My Name' probably has the strongest chorus I have heard on any song for years.

'If I Was The Man In Ure Life' and 'Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance' also possess solid, memorable choruses.

'A Million Days' and 'Cinnamon Girl' both have very powerful hooks and melodies.

I can understand that you may not appreciate the commercial sound of the 'Musicology' album and the recent songs, and perhaps prefer more musical complexity (same here in many respects) but I'm not sure where you are coming from with the 'melodies' and 'choruses' comment.

Peace

I assume you are speaking in generalities, right? biggrin As in, can the general public hum these songs?

I'm sure there are many people on this site (myself included) who could hum anything off of Musicology that even remotely resembles a hook.

Edit: Oh, and my two cents: I like both new songs quite a bit. At the moment, I seem to prefer "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed" more than "Black Sweat." The ending is, like prettymansson said, a lot like "ICP&C" with a bit of "What Do U Want Me 2 Do?" in it. I still have to listen to them quite a bit more, though, to fully internalize them.

I am beginning to really like this song. I love the guitar at the end and of course I love Prince's vocals.

I can imagine this being played on the radio. Its got nice lyrics and a pretty
melody.

But right now I gotta lisstn to Black Sweat again lol
If you will, so will I

I can see what sos is saying -- but more than half of Prince's songs are built around a funky beat with a simple harmony (if that) and a very short chorus -- check out most of the songs on SOTT. "Black Sweat" is classic Prince -- just him being himself, at last!

Now, on the other hand, there are those lushious compositions that Prince is also known for (and yeah, many of them were written through input (if not along with help from) Wendy & Lisa, and sometimes other professional instrumentalists (Eric Leeds, Clare Fischer, etc)). As a songwriter, I have a GREAT appreciation for the amount of work and intelligence these type of songs require. To me, "Te Amo Corazon" is a half-hearted (excuse the pun) attempt at doing something like this, and I don't feel "Beautiful/Blessed" even has the intention of being one of those compositions (though it is a real nice song). But I really don't think we'll see THOSE types of songs (at least not in abundance) until Prince reaches that point of musical renaissance (as Anx had said in a previous post) where he just decides to sit down, figure it all out for himself, and completely indulge all aspects of his vast expertise as a musician, songwriter (lyricist too), producer, and performer.
