Actual released CDs , not counting concert CDs or downloads. If it's any use i am sure i read in the music press that it sold c400k in the UK alone and c2m worldwide excluding U.S. sales. I may have read this over at HQ?. Times like these we need Bart!!

The total I believe was 2.1 million total, 1 million sold and 1.1 million given with concert tickets.

I don't recall the numbers now, but folks were tracking the Soundscan figures on here weekly and I definitely remember the hoopla when "Musicology" passed the million mark in ACTUAL SALES.

I know it went 2x and 2 million people didn't show up for the concerts. I remember P sayingin a interview that Sony was upset that the CD's in the store hasn't sold a mill. yet but the way he said it made it seem that it wasn't far off. Like I said I know it did sell 2x.
PEACE PS If Emancipation sold 2x, I know Musicology did fine. Prime aka The Kid

It did... ...Don't have the exact figure, but actual sales (not concert giveaways) totalled over 1 million units...keep in mind that "units sold" usually means sold to stores, NOT sold to consumers.

I rember hearing somewhere (I think on BB.com) that the album in USA sold like less then 200k copies! It sold almost 170 K in actual sales the FIRST week so this is incorrect. All good things they say never last...

It sold about a million actual cds!! how we know?? hits daily double only counted actual sales and didnt consider the concert things at all!! althought the concert sold abit less then 1.5miol tickets about 400k were not counted becasue they were issues b4 the officcial release date!! also npgmc downloads werent included becasue they came b4 the official release date!! If all these r included then u r lookin at totaly sales in the range over 2.5million [Edited 2/14/06 23:40pm]

it didn't sell anywhere near 400k in the UK, that was just some random person on HQ saying it as if it was fact because they were pissed off at Bizarre in The Sun ragging on Prince. It got to number 3 on the back of 30k sales or something, then progressively dropped out of the charts. It will have sold less than 100k and I think it did go Gold for 100k shipped to stores.
It's a safe bet in the US just to say it did around a million, I personally thought it was like 900k sold but it probably leveled off around a million. Either way, it sold great numbers (for Prince) without the concert tie-in.

"Musicology" sold, in the USA, 934,000 copies through retail and an adittional 1,066,000 coming from concerts. In the UK it sold 97,000 and in Japan 60,000.

Just a thought to compare Ps sale in the UK to really big sellers - what are the sales figures of say, Coldplay or Robbie Williams in the UK?
My feeling is that Prince nowadays sell 85% to hard-core fans from "back in the day" who buy all his albums, 10% to casual fans and only 5% are first-time Prince buyers (if at all). What is your take on that

Edu,
Since you provided us Prince`s Soundscan sales, do you have more information regarding international sales? The info about musicology sales in uk and japan are quite interesting... Do you have more? Thanks Linus

according to todays UK paper , The Times, it said it sold 6million!, i only skim read it so forgive if its incorrect, but damn if it was 6million that would be amazing. Lets say c2m in the US and 4 million outside the US , i doubt he would've sold that many. Great if he did though.

It kills me that because he gave away CDs at his concert , people think he really didnt sell any and his chart success was purely fabricated. [Edited 2/15/06 7:39am]

The worldwide year end charts placed it in the top 30 albums of 2004 selling 3.01million!

3 Million worldwide sounds like a realistic number...

According to Wikipedia, the worldwide sales of Musicology are 6,300,000

This number is not correct, imho.
Would be nice, but in the states it sold like 2 million copies and it is highly unrealistic that it sold 4 million more copies outside of the us. We heard of japan 60 000 and uk 90 000. Germany is a big market too and the album was several weeks top ten, but it didn`t sell more than 100000-200000 copies. Just my 2 cents...

it sold more than 90 000 copies over here in the UK... it held a chart position at number 3.
Either way it's still a fantastic album, it was probably his best (if not his ONLY GOOD album) since COME.
