Clearly they sent a reporter to cover Prince's arrival - so that at the very least shows that THEY think he's still important, even though they deny it. You can tell they were simply annoyed that Prince diffused the situation and avoided the paparazzi.

Absolutely, he is famous and interesting enough for the Sun to devote an entire artical to it!

As stated already if the show tomorrow is good, the Sun will be all over him.
Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

They dont even have any right 2 call themselves NEWSpapers, cos all they do is print lies and made-up, bizaar, far-fetched stories that defies any intelligence!!!!

How come its always The Sun that picks up on this type of crap and not The Daily Mail, The Daily Express, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Times, etc.????? biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

Basically The Sun, etc. just shows up the mindset of the British people!!! biggrin biggrin biggrin
[Edited 2/14/06 2:15am]

The Daily Express and the Daily Mail are as big a rags as the Sun et al, if not more so as they do it under the guise of being "serious papers". The Sun may print articles that bend the truth to fit their spin, and a lot of what they print is shit, but at least they have no pretentions. I really wouldnt even bother getting worked up about what the sun prints - like you say they consider Robbie Williams a talent. The Express has a Princess Diana story on its front pages every day, how can you even consider that a remotely serious paper. Both the Mail and the Express appeal to middle England house wives.

That said, the suns journalists are actually very well connected (and well educated) people, they just have to appeal to a certain type of person and their stories are taylored to suit that. You think some fat white van man appreciates or cares about Prince musically??? At the end of the day, where's the news in "Prince is brilliant, prince is a genius, prince has flown into England. They want an angle, abit of edge to a story, and that is the easiest way they do it.

I think it is clear some newspapers typecast celebrities in a certain role, and report news written in a way that supports that stereotype. For Prince, the typecasting (rightly or wrongly!) is that of a faded popstar who is as primadonna-ish and difficult to keep happy as Mariah Carey supposedly is. These sort of papers will only ever report news that reinforces this view, they will not go out of their way to report how talented someone is.

It's already been said several times but if the performance is great, they'll soon be licking P's ass. lick

And you can guarantee that - had he granted them an exclusive 'Prince speaks' interview - they'd be fawning all over his 'genius' and 'charisma'. It's just the way some newspapers work. They don't get The Big Story = you suck; they get The Big Story = you're amazing.

It's only The Sun, people. shrug

Things to remember about Victoria Newton:

1. she thought that Coldplay's X & Y was one of the best albums last year - yeah really!!

2. She thinks that Robbie Williams is something close to a superstar - not sure if he's cracked the U.S. yet lol

3. and finally she does a good imperonation of a chav in her picture lol

I wouldnt even bother to worry about her views, for all we know Prince may have turned her down for an interview or something - sounds like sour grapes to me.

He wouldn't give a shit if they forgave him or not because bottom line, if he's such the has-been that the newspaper say he is then why are they wasting their time and newspaper article on him. For somebody that's yesteday's news they sure had alot to say and plus he's there to make his cheese ain't nothin' wrong with that. They may not care, but I'm sure P has plenty of fans there just like he does here in the US. Even during the Purple Rain era, they talked about him like a dog when he attended the Brit awards.

wow! That article was harsh!! And it's not like it's an album review where, you know...people's tastes differ but damn it's about an arrival into the country! Seems very odd this person is sooo annoyed over his mere arrival. She goes on and on about how unimportant he is as she tells us how the brits awards are jumping through hoops and some hotel pulled out all the stops for him?!?!?

someone's pissed she didn't get sent to cover the red carpet.

heres mine

why the pissy article regarding Prince?

what did he not grant an interview for your paper or something? How small!

One note the reason the Brits want Prince to perform is because he is one of the most talented musician/performers on the face of the earth. Thats what he does...how about writing something relating to that? Ask Elton John how talented the Prince is.

If you want an interview dial up that other 80s icon Madonna. Heard she doing arobic routines these days to 00s disco music. Yeah thats a musician alright

yeah people here are freaking out and the info is hard to argue with. he is not as popular as he was in his hay day. some people can not accept that his best (well most popular) day are about 25 years <---- that way. which is great because i can get good seats to his shows!

and you know prince sings about that very fact... maybe some orgers need to Letitgo...

As a few others have pointed out and most of you have ignored , the facts in this article are pretty much spot on.Prince really hasnt had much of a chart presence in the UK for a decade and he does surround himself with over the top security which he doesnt really need to bother with as the majority of his fans are well past the age where we're gonna flock to an airport or to his hotel screaming for him . The opinions she gives are irrelevant , she's expressed similar opinions on other stars who act like theyre something special in the past and will in the future .
Also lest we forget her column was the 1st to actually give any clue that Prince would be at the brits , every other newspaper was just following The Sun's lead .Forget her opinions and focus on the fact that her column actually got the scoop that Prince is making what the Brits organisers really wanted to be a SURPRISE APPEARANCE , which still hasnt been mentioned on the brits website and the NPGMC wouldn't have confirmed if not for pressure from people wanting to go . Imagine how pissed you all would be if Prince did appear at the brits and none of us had the first clue and missed it , especially those people who are travelling to go and see him .
Chances are next week that same column will be bashing Britney Spears dress sense or Usher's ego or something else that just maybe you guys agree on ,
Prince is just todays topic of choice.....

And that's the kind of irony that goes right over the head of the average Sun reader. Tabloids are the same all over -- they exploit the lower middle class by validating their ideals and resentments, giving them celebrities to love and to hate. In this case, they play "look at the difficult star and marvel at how much he lacks the common sense you yourself exude".

Honestly, you folks, this is all just a bit of hype whipped up by Prince's publicists to generate interest in his performance.

Of course he will play, but you want to make a story out of the whole thing to get people paying attention - building on the pre-existent narrative of Prince as "Eccentric" and "Demanding".

The Sun is just spinning the spin that the publicists are putting out to hype up his UK shows.

Expect a pre-Brits warm up show attended by Journalists from around the UK that will be written up the day of the Brits, to generate even more interest.

There is a story in the national press for the first time in an age and there will be more.

We should be glad.
