Alica Keys career development as compared to Prince Fellow orger's
We all have talked about Alica Keys and the way she being hyped and pushed to the general public. Alica has had a phenomenal year although I think it is to early in her career for that kind of success also her album is good but not great!!! The point is where does she goes from here? Could she suffer a terrible backlash from all this publicity? Prince started off with "For You" but with each album the material became stronger. The concepts and message conveyed with each album became more interesting and along the way Prince was slowly building his core audience. Prince was a major cult artist during this period of his career. Then of course all of this culminated with Purple Rain but as the fickle follow the latest hot act fans went by the wayside Prince still had his core audience which allowed him to be completely and totally artistic, creative and daring with his music which is also why we all are still here browsing prince.org. I have been in the Prince world for 20 years now, he may misstep sometimes along the way but at least his heart is in it and it is something he truly believes in so he will always have my support. Will Alica have this same career path I do not know. I just hope she realize that she needs to back off!!! Peace and be Wild Y'all!!! "Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud!!!" - Brother James Brown

Prince's debut wasn't nearly as developed or commercially successful. He was "underground", and for some, "punk" right up until "1999" dropped. Alicia's Grammy Awards sealed her fate, I'm afraid. It looks like another Tracy Chapman phenomoenon all over again. The best thing for AK to do is lay low, stay out of the spotlight, AVOID SOUNDTRACKS and longterm contracts, shun movie offers (which you know will come) and perhaps seek out the advice of someone like Prince on how to avoid being played out. Focus on her music and development as an artist, then 2 or 3 years down the road, unleash a killer follow up LP. Also, NO COMMERCIALS! Just MOHO. I think she's good and would hate to see her fade. She's very young, very talented and, too quickly, very popular.

And what does she need to "back off " from. This woman has integrity, and at such a young age. she could have been in the industry long before now, but she "chose" not to go the bootie shakin' "exploitive" route. I recently attended the essence awards at the Universal Ampitheatre in Hollywood where Alicia was honored by Roberta Flack and Stevie Wonder...now when legendary artists give u props, then that means there is "respect" there, and she is very blessed...:0) And the fact that she is a "fellow" Aquarius had no bearing on my comment...LOL

She is a very refreshing change of pace from all the other younger act who are nothing more than pretty faces cooing the camera. She's not faking her shit in the studio, the girl can play and sing. I agree she runs the risk of being overexposed with someone like Clive Davis pushing her in everyones face. But I think her talent will win people over. Lets not forget she's still pretty young.

Sad to say, at the Essence Festival in New Orleans,
July 4, Alicia bombed! She worked very hard, but the crowd was not there for her. People chatted while she performed. Many left the huge arena to visit other performers in the superlounges (5 concerts running at the same time in the SUPERDOME). Some made the comment,"Thank God!'...or "There is a God" They were so happy for her to finish. Alicia asked the crowd to scream when she counted to three because she had never heard 40,000 people scream at one time...Huge mistake. She might have heard 5000 scream. Indie Arie, on the other hand was well received and part of her performance was aired live from the Superdome on national TV. - So...how's everybody doing?

I don't get it. Why was Alicia Keys being honored by Roberta Flack and Stevie Wonder? She has released exactly one (1) album and she's already being honored by legendary musicians?
Are music audiences really so hungry for new performers who actually have some kind of talent that someone like Alicia Keys can come along and everybody showers her with awards and praise just because she plays piano? Right now I think Alicia is okay. She has excellent potential, but I'm not one of those people who have jumped on the "AK" bandwagon.

The difference is that Prince's debut album sold 450,000 copies and didn't win any awards. Alicia Keys debut album has sold millions and won every kind of music award you can imagine.

Artists back in the day had a 3-5 Album lay out plan.nowadays you gotta hit with your 3rd-5th song or you are done.mistermaxxx
