So far Uni's team haven't had to be that aggresive...I can count the times I heard "Musicology" on the radio (and not in the AC R&B format, which is not really that important in the big scheme of things; BS is generating airplay on the bigger radio markets and categories)...So far I've heard BS six times since this past Sunday...I've heard it on "Hip Hop" radio stations like New York's Hot 97 and Power...

And i've already seen BS gain more video airplay than "Musicology" during it's initial run...

The bottom line: No one knows if BS will be a huge hit for Prince; but it seems like it may do more for actually promoting an album in ways Musicology never could...
[Edited 2/14/06 6:54am]

Wait a minute...U guy sthink Musicology was more radio-friedly? On what grounds do U based this on? Musicology received more spins only on the Urban AC format, but BS has a more commercial appeal and would appeal to younger listeners (with a remix and rapper) so overall I think BS is a stronger single. I don't remember Musicoly being targeted for spins on the rythmic/crossover format. I'm telling U guys, this a better song, it has more pop to it. Musicology was cool, nice JB influence, but this song has more edge to it.

He went down that very route with Diamonds & Pearls, and look what happened. The only difference now is we're older and wiser and won't lick up everything we get spoonfed.

One word y'all: Jughead. eek doh! hmph! disbelief

I don't think he has anything to worry about commerically just yet - the Musicology tour grossed over $90million - the most succesful tour of 2004. Prince was also the highest earning entertainer in America in 2004, netting himself a cool $53million - so I don't think he needs to pander to anything or anyone right now. He's not on the map, he is the map! (can I get an amen upinhah?) nod

Typical Prince fan's lack of understanding of hip-hop...There is a huge, overwheming, planetary difference between Tony M AND a Nas or Jay Z...If P were to make a remix for "Black Sweat" featuring Nas, I wouldn't be opposed to it...Because Nas (or Jay Z for the matter) are respected MC's in their genre..."Jughead" was horrible not because P made an attempt at tackling hip-hop..It was utter shit because it was a terrible, out-of-touch attempt at utilizing hip-hop...nothing more, nothing less...

And yet Diamonds & Pearls was Prince's second most successful album ever! Purists may say it was an appalling use of the hip-hop genre, (opinion) in retrospect, but the buying public loved the album Tony M and all (fact).

I dug the production on some of the D&P songs...and I dug Prince's rhymes on "Get Off..." But as a straight-no-chaser hip-hop fan from way back, I could have done without Tony M...My point was that people hating on any type of hip-hop influence on Prince are missing the point...Tony M, was a corny, lackluster MC at best, but that's not an indictment on hip-hop; that's just an indictment on Prince's understanding of the hip-hop genre...But if you were to tell me that Nas or Jay Z would be on a remix for "Black Sweat," I would have no problem with this...To me, that's like Michael Jackson recruiting Eddie Van Halen or Slash to play guitar on his albums...If you are going to collaborate with someone from a another genre, you should at least fuck with the best....

lol Jeez - excuse me for voicing my opinion (which I have to say was quoted out of context) Did I say I disliked D&P? No. It's common knowledge that D&P was crafted in a concious effort to reconnect with his black audience, as well as a massive promotional push to ensure it was a commerical success - exactly what was done with Musicology.

THAT was my point.

I understand what you are saying - though it seems to me if Prince had got some contemporary big name rapper to do the Tony M raps on D&P and the Symbol album, even if it was the same lyrics and sung in a very similar way, then nobody would be complaining. It always seems that the problem people have is that Tony M was one of Prince's mates with no street cred. What cred has to do with what the final song sounds like, I don't know, but it always seems to be very important to big fans of the hip-hop genre.

Besides, Prince could never have got big name rapper to be at his beck-and-call and go on tours with him, just like Van Halen and Slash don't tour with MJ, so he would always have been forced to hire a lesser known rapper to fill their places live anyway.

Also, I don't see why Prince has to have this in-depth understanding of hip-hop to utilize it in his music. Do hip-hop artists have in-depth knowledge of the rock or classical music they sample? I shouldn't think so, but that doesn't stop them coming up with interesting new music, which is all Prince tried to do.

I agree with your post for the most part....But I wasn't even thinking about the aspect of a tour....My whole point was that fans' anger over the "hip-hop" inspired D&P project was misplaced in my view...Instead of showing hatred for Prince utilizing "hip-hop" or "selling-out," they should have been more concerned with his lack of understanding the genre...all this to say, if there was a "Black Sweat" remix with Nas or a Jay-Z on it, I wouldn't be opposed to such a collaboration...It's not about street credibility; it's about talent, just like any other genre of music...Hip-hop is a different animal; Lyrical prowess is of more of an importance than knowing the inspiration behind a Bach composition....Well, at least it used to be (LOL)
