The rainbow children is not one of my favorite cd's by prince. But it's growing on me more. Great tracks like she loves me 4 me, last december, and the work. Will always hate the darth vader voice popping up through out the album. It worked on bob george but not here.

It is so funny how different things are so different to different people. After the NPS album, I gave up on Prince. One day in Wal-Mart, I saw the cover of "TRC." After looking at the date on the CD, I relized that the album was 2 yrs old(this was in 2003) but the cover intrigued me so I bought it. I was floored and became a Prince fan again. I think the CD is EXCELLENT and is in the top 5 of my favorite Prince songs of all times!

Btw, I agree with THIS review of "TRC" biggrin

The album really flows, and the engineering was brilliant also. The instruments sound great.

I don´t see where critics see so much smooth jazz on this album (mostly because people associate Najee´s sax with Kenny G, but smooth jazz artists don´t use that kind of ring modulator on the guitar in the middle). Only the first track has some parts of it. ´Everywhere´ is pure Parade, ´1+1+1=3´ is a cousin of Erotic City, Everlasting Now, The Work and Family Name are funk/rock. Even ´Sensual Ever after´ is a rock ballad anthem much closer to Steve Vai than Kenny G.

Ok, we got ´Mellow´ and ´Muse 2 the pharaoh´ which are ballads, but they at least escape from the ´Do me baby/Scandalous/Insatiable´ formula (that I like a lot, don´t get me wrong)

Now that's an intelligent review.

TRC is a magnificent album. It sounds so different from anything u hear 2day from mainstream artists.
edgy. brave. it seems as he "had" 2 do it.

i wonder what true musicians think about it

There are plenty of honest reviews of TRC - whether one agrees with them or not is an entirely different matter. wink

The lyrics are the album, that's the problem. The music is just there to ensnare us into falling for the bullshit that Prince is trying to pull. The same way a bad product is pitched with a clever commercial.

Someone like you who likes Iron Maiden & Scorpions should have no right to discuss music in the first place ! falloff
TRC is a masterpiece. You're probably more into NPS or rave. Sorry TRC is the most mature album Prince has released musically.

(GASP!)

Iron Maiden Rules!!!! And so does Uli John Roth Era Scorpions. Infact, I would argue that Uli John Roth and Prince are very similiar people.

Anyway... it's not a war between Scorps/Maiden and Prince. Never was.

Yep. I think it's a pretentious, schizophrenic mess with only a few highlights, but I won't pretend my opinion is the one and only "truth." That kind of arrogance is for religious people.

Everyone should be appalled by The Rainbow Children.

I mean, fucking Osama Bin Laden could've written these lyrics:
But let me tell u how it's gonna b

There's a theocratic order.
There's a theocratic order now

This is how it's gonna b
If u wanna b with me
Ain't no room 4 disagree

Fair enough. IMO prince is at his best when he's pretentious and schizophrenic.

- So, I wasn´t the only one. I must say I was almost giving up on Prince, after all those years of plastic Kirky J production, average guitar playing, R&B-ish songs...NPS, High album, RaveUn2 concert...everything was sounding ´tired´ back then and below Prince´s quality standards...

Then, some orger (Goldnigga 2000) here said that I would LOVE TRC, and that the ´new drummer´ and production were amazing. He wasn´t wrong. TRC is musically brilliant. After that, he gave us a wonderful tour (ONA) and I was happy to be a fan again. smile

It really is the most contentious album of his, isn't it? It was one of the first Prince albums I ever heard, right after Lovesexy. So I came into it pretty blind, only really hearing his popular singles before. And I think coming into TRC blind is the best thing to do - I devoured it! I knew very little of his religious beliefs back then, so I took most of the lyrics on the chin. But musically, it really is an amazing album. "Aimless smooth jazz?" WTF? And he thinks She Loves Me 4 Me is the best song on there? Wow. I guess I'm still surprised how different we all are.

The more I learn about The Man in Purple, the more he reminds me of 1980s Zappa - in his own world, pretty much making albums for himself, sometimes branching off into the world of chart music for cash purposes. TRC is not an album for the fans. And as long as you keep that in mind when you listen to it, I think you can enjoy it. You can enjoy it a buttload.

Lyrically speaking, TRC sums up every religious and/ "spiritual" thought he's ever had beforehand. I don't know why people get so shocked or surprised. There's really nothing new here. (Maybe the Father/son references? There's undertones of that elsewhere, however).

Chaos & Disorder was a big warm-up for TRC. But its lyrical origins are in Controversy, and its original theme is found in Dirty Mind...

I'm not even hardcore, and I've figured this out. lol Come on, people!

edited for overuse of "lyrically-speaking" lol

What makes this review (which I happen to mostly agree with) any more honest than a review that praises the album? rolleyes

It's all fucking opinions at the end of the day.
