But I DO:( LOL and that what make it worse. My brotha used to do the same shit(PRINCE) wit me when I was young and I would ASK & ASK & ASK. They think that 'Do me,baby' is 'Kiss me baby' so they won't get into that whole MESSY MESSY MESS.

Music is good for children..i played alot of Prince when my Goddaughter was small, and she would say what does that mean and i would tell her something other than what the word actually meant...Anyway she is 12 now and has a friend that listens to Prince. Needless to say she knows what the words mean.

Don't feel too bad about it. No use sheltering them. And it's better they learn that sort of thing at home with guidance than what "jack u off" means somewhere from one of their little school friends. And Lord knows all that knowledge starts about the 3rd grade.

Question2002

Don't feel bad let them listen my son has been
listening since he was born and from all the music
he is a performer and i have to thank Prince for
that. So you never will know what will become of
this. I used to tell him when he grows up he is
going to have a good laugh at what Prince is really
singing. I wish you could have seen his face when
he found out what Jack U Off meant. 2 funny 8)

I totally understand where you are coming from. I was doing the same thing for years when my kids were younger (like 2 years through seven years of age). My husband didn't like it. I knew I had to stop when my daughter was four and would run around singing "Lady Cab Driver." So now I don't do it. I don't mind if they hear non-cussing, non-sexual songs of Prince's, but that is it. Sure they will know about sex some day, but I feel very uncomfortable listening to say something like "Pussy Control" with my nine year old in the room. I don't think it is right. I don't want my kids growing up too fast!

Such a good topic!

I have 3 kids, 14, 6 & 5. They have been listening 2 Prince since they were in the womb...(and probably during conception! wink ).

My daughter sort of "brags" 2 her friends that she's heard every Prince song ever written, then rolls her eyes when she thinks I'm not looking. Deep down I know she likes the majority of his stuff and she often questions me on some of the lyrics; mostly songs like "The Holy River" and "The Cross", etc...when there's a story attached.

I know she's heard them all, good & nasty...but it really doesn't faze her. She's an honor roll student, a blue belt in Tae Kwon Do, and respectful 2 her parents and others.

We have always lived under the rule, "do as I say, not as I do". Her mom and I often blurt out a "choice" word now and then, but the kids aren't even allowed 2 say "stupid", because we feel it's demeaning and hurtful...and u know what? They don't.

They know that ART is ART...MUSIC is an art, and is treated as such. I listen 2 Eminem 2, but not as much around them simply bcuz it's more in a spoken tone, not really "hidden" in song.

So...imo, go on Harlepolis, listen 2 ur heart's content. It's not what u play that will guide ur children...it's U.

Man:D of all the GOOD ppl around here you're the one who made it easier 4 me,,,THANK U SO MUCH!!

When my sistah see me playing Prince in front of my babies she would say:You're 2 young 4 yo own good,,,WHAT??? Even tho I don't know what that shit mean I GET MAD AS HELL. Thats why I posted this, of course you wouldn't catch me play Come/P control/Darling Nikki and all that shit LOL but the good thing is I won't have to worry about catching my kids listening 2 Bow wow or B2K Gawd I'd throw myself from the empire state bulding if that shit happend.

And they have a REAL TASTE of music(Curtis/Marvin/Stevie/Roberta/Anita/Billie/Ella) yeah a 5 yrs old 'IMAN' and a 2 yrs old 'Khalid' would listen to that type of music. Betta believe it,,,

Don't get me wrong, they still hear their share of Stevie, James Taylor, Parliament, George Clinton, Paul Simon, A LOT of 80's Compilations, Tracy Chapman, Sinatra, Anita Baker, Madonna, Streisand, etc...etc...and I do skip thru "orgasm" and other "2 sexy" songs when the kids are around! biggrin

I went out and bought the London Symphony Orchestra's "Music Of Prince" CD and played that for my children while they were in the womb (my wife & I feel that classical music is best for developing minds).

Now that my oldest son is turning 4, I am playing more Prince CD's for him, but I am DEFINITELY skipping the erotic & curse-ladden tracks. They'll learn all that stuff when they're in school, so there's no sense in rushing it. Besides, they absorb and repeat EVERYTHING, & it's not appropriate for a toddler to be walking around singing, "I am Violet, the organ grinder..."

As a parent, every action & decision that you make ultimately shapes and defines the adult that your child will grow into. Choose what they see and what they hear with great care. It'll mean the difference between having a grown-up son/daughter that can give you free legal counsel or one that can give you free fries with your burger.

speaking of "jack u off" ---funny story begins...

since i was a pretty sheltered kid, even though i had been a Prince fan for about 4 years, i really did NOT know what "ACCU-jack" or whatever, meant. so, you ask? so, i asked my English teacher. he looked at me and explained. i kinda blushed, and said "thanks, bye!"

Lord, I couldn't look him in the eye for the rest of the week. but he was cool about it. he already knew i was a big Prince fan, and he already knew about his lyrics...

Its all good to play his music in front of your children but at least you should either play the cleaner versions or don't play the so call nasty songs in front of them. They don't need to know about that stuff til their old enough to understand what they are singing about. Prince has alot of other songs you could play especially with positive messages in them. So in that case you don't have to feel bad if you just watch what you play. This is just my opinion. I have a 6 month old and I play Prince in front of her but not the nastier songs, because I don't want her first word to be a bad one, get my drift.lol

No way no how, should you feel bad. I have a 10 1/2 yr old daughter who has heard Prince's music for as long as I can remember. I have explained to her over and over that music is just that! MUSIC! It's there for entertainment purposes. Of course I am very open with my daughter and we talk about these kind of things, but I guess everyone has their own opinion on parenting ways, : )

PurpleJedi said it best. Kids will learn about all of that, but there is no sense rushing it. I play the cleaner stuff around my kids. When they're more mature, I'll play the more mature stuff. Is it sheltering them? Probably. I'm not denying that sex, drugs, violence or religion etc exist. I'm showing my children that I am here to stand by them and, hopefully guide them well, through these big issues.
I'm firmly planted in denial

My nephew and nieces be jammin to Prince music too. They don't even know what he's saying though, they just dance to, and like the music. It's just music anyway, so I don't think it really matters. You just can't shun children from everything, important thing is that you teach them about the era and a little something something about Prince.

Well she already know that;) U see history repeat itself. When I was young she would play P Funk/Boosty Collins/Rick James/G. Clinton/Millie Jackson and MOST OF ALL--->>>Prince.

My mother would spank her when she enter our room and catch us jammin on 'Sexy Dancer' instead of finishing our home work.

And now I'm doing the same stuff to my children(But in a safer way wink)
