Well, he could take his time and say, "Eric Leeds, do that one solo where the notes go all over the place, you know the one, oh yeah,....remember? That one we rehearsed over and over again about a month ago. Where you go all over the place? The end high and go mellow for about 16 counts?"

Or he could use a cue word like "Germany".

In fact, I was just being silly, but Prince being the bandleader that he is, uses cue words for his players. Like when he says "On the one!" He means for something to happen (usually ending) on the one count of a beat. Or when the music stops...all is quiet, then suddenly he says, "Good god!" - Usually this is follows on the next beat with the music beginning again. It's a cue to his band.

When he asks for "Germany" he asking for a certain type of flow from Eric. I think he's also called out "A Train" before.

Hope this helps! biggrin

Well, he could take his time and say, "Eric Leeds, do that one solo where the notes go crazy, you know the one, oh yeah,....remember? That one we rehearsed over and over again about a month ago in preparation for this live gig. Where you go all over the place, panemonium-style? Then you wind up ending high and go mellow for about 16 counts?"

Or he could use a cue word like "Germany".

Sorry, didn't mean to quote myself...but what' in this quote is an edited version of what I had previously posted. Damn, now I'm confused too! neutral

Eric DOES look a bit like German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder with that black hat, doesn´t he ? lol

Prince was in Germany before the concert to discuss and plan the German part of the Purple Rain tour, which was originally planned as a world tour. So he went to Germany and talked with this German guy from WDR (German TV station) who was in charge of the Rockpalast concert shows on German TV. ( I don´t remember his name but he´s a man in his 60´s now but already had silverish hair back then).

After it was clear that Prince would cancel the European ( or German ) leg of the Purple Rain tour they settled on broadcasting a Purple Rain concert via satellite, and that´s the Syracuse March 1985 concert we´re all familiar with ( officially released and broadcasted on German TV numerous times).

That´s also the reason why there are so many fans with " Hello Europe " signs in the crowd....this was like a substitute for the real deal.

And since Germany, or better yet WDR Rockpalast , was in charge of things it was sort of a German/American collaboration.

He later did something similar with the Lovesexy show in Dortmund, this time working with a Dutch TV team but playing in Germany and broadcasting in several European countries.

Hope this helps.

By the way, that Rick James live concert DVD that was released in the USA the other day was also part of the Rockpalast series....they did a lot of cool shows back then, still do. I have a couple of Bob Marley and Black Uhuru and Sade and Foo Fighters shows, they were all part of the WDR Rockpalast series, sometimes with small interviews before or after the show ( with British music journalist Alan Bangs). He also interviewed Carlos Santana in 2001.
