As for the SNL performance, AWESOME. He couldn't have done much better. Love the fact that the 'do rag was back in effect for the first song, too. He looked like he had an amazing amount of fun and was quite pleased with himself after the first song, too.

I agree. He couldn't have done better. Damn near flawless performance. I can't wait until they re-broadcast this thing. I think the first airing got buried after the Superbowl/Stones performance. The March rerun should remedy that!

One more related web site discussion. This one on JohnPetrucci.com (He is the guitarist for Prog Rock band DreamTheater - so the audience is mostly guitarists that really dig the technical side of the instrument).

Nothing but praise, and some hilarious comments as well (i.e. I thought he was just that "I wanna party like it's 1999 guy - but he rocks!).

lol Lots of great responses. I liked these...

"I never heard Prince before I saw that. I thought he was some wierd pop/funk guy. But wow. I think I have a new idol."

"That was awesome he is so confident on the guitar, man he is good I always thought he was just a mediocre guitar pop player."

"Every note, nuance and noise that he played on the guitar meant something...and he makes it look like reckless abandon at the same time...and also with that hint of arrogance...it's so damn cool
Now...that's what I call a show."

Very late to say this, but I'm kinda glad that Prince didn't do the Prince Show skit. Would've been yet another "So he was in the middle of impersonating (insert celebrity) and then the real (insert celebrity) showed up!"

Yeah, that's still funny....bored

Toward the end of the skit, when Fred moved to the mirror, I really thought it was going to be a fake mirror, with Fred impersonating Prince on one side, and the real Prince as the "reflection." There could have been some clever comedy in that, I think.

Regardless, it's completely cool that he performed twice on a show that poked good natured fun at him. It is good to know that he has a sense of humor about it. Hell, he should be thankful for the exposure...that skit has been going on for two years now. Not many SNL skits last long, and those that do are because their subject matter is entrenched in popular culture to a point where everyone "gets it."

I keep watching this thing, and I got to say MUCHO PROPS to whoever was directing when Prince performed "Fury" -- it had to have been rehearsed, because the director knew (most of the time) exactly what camera angles to use at certain spots during the song. I spent some time in a television studio last week, and it's hard enough hearing everything that goes on inside a control room when choosing what camera angles to take; much less, trying to predict what's going to happen next when your eyes and ears aren't solely focused on the performance but filled with a dozen other distractions as well. The director made this live performance look almost like a well-rehearsed music video. Definitely something to be proud of.

quotes from various internet posters:

The first song by Prince on SNL was probably the greatest singular rock performance on broadcast television since the Beatles premiered on the Ed Sullivan Show. I honestly don't know how Tina Fey and Amy Pohler were able to find it within themselves to go on stage and follow that with fart jokes about Bush.

Actually, I wondered the same thing. How could the whole entire crew of SNL come back after commercial and act like that performance never happened???

He is VERY HENDRIX in Movement.. especially when he "Makes his Mouth expressions, when he Hits a HIgh Note"..and the "Tilting Head shake" is all Hendrix.. What a small Tribute to the Master of the Stratocaster.. *Which Prince is also Playing*

Who alive today, besides Prince, could get away with a performance like that and gain total respect for doing just as good if not better than the one he is influenced by???

WTF did Prince do now? Change his name to the late Jimi Hendrix? I thought he be a Monopoly thimble by now.

lol

WHAT AN EXIT! I get chills on that one!

nod Quite the showman, he is.

Puts Clapton, even Jimmy Page to his knees.

guitar

Prince was hot shit on last night's Saturday Night Live. I've missed his ass, but didn't he go all Christian? I heard he won't do any of his past hits, because his morals don't agree with the lyrics. Holy Vanity!

This song kicks some serious ass.

Quit analyzing and get on the MP3 finding. I'm soooo stoked about this song.

Prince is one of the great guitar players this side of a dirt nap.
Excellent song. Please find the mp3.

All that time shut inside Paysley Park practicing his guitar has payed off!

that song owns everything death cab has ever done.

wow, that song is fucking sweet. post the MP3 if/when you get it!

That song was *excellent*. Had a lot of punch.

Couldn't find the mp3 anywhere... couldn't even find it on any Prince album on Amazon. Hmmm. lol

damn prince can SHRED guitar

that was pretty freakin awesome. always loved prince and this is a sweet
throwback sound too. could have been a hit single in several decades

Prince is a badass mothafucka and you all know it. HE MADE THE GUITAR PLAY
ITSELF!! Then he walks offstage like a pimp and shows all those whiney emo boys
and lame nu-metal posers how to tear it up. Follow that Fred Armisen! And he
doesn't even play any of his old songs even though he hasn't been on the show in 25 years. He owns my ass and yours too.
nod

It would have been cute if he made a cameo against his impersonation. I was
waiting for that and was disappointed.
But boy can he cook on the guitar...

PRINCE is a KING, is amazing!!.....

I was hoping that Prince would cameo in the Prince skit...but then I realized, hey, this is Prince. He takes himself wayyy too seriously.
I don't care though, b/c that man can sure play some mean guitar.

Prince rocks hard. Always has, always will.

Prince rocked it hard.

Prince's guitar playing is delightfully masturbatory

Prince is an amazing guitarist. i haven't heard him play like that since purple rain era. he proved he is still the greatest

Prince rules, and I was ecstatic to see him finally prove it to those who had forgotten. Great new song, too. Yes, he's a Hendrix fan. Always has been.

In regards to the song, I agree with Scott, that song was really likeable. I've never really been a Prince fan but that song has greatness written all over it. There's no denying, Prince is a great showman.

uh, yeah, anyone who doesn't recognize that Prince is one of the most amazing guitar players and all-around musicians ever to walk the earth is too damn stupid to breathe. the song is great, and every "indie" band or whoever should kiss his ring. Now, if someone can provide an mp3 of his performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame induction, I will <3 U 4 EVA!

wasnt so bad- so effin hendrix! i seriously thought that when he laid his guitar down he was going to set it on fire and get on his knees lol

I love it when the real musicians come out and play once in ahwile. For once a
artist on SNL, did not neeed a backing track to fulfill the night is a testamony to his grandour. You detractors need to smoke yourselves out and get a life.
