cool!thanks for that list but i already have all of those joints!
i am digging deeper!
i want to know what happened to tracks like "Makeba","I Am 5","It Iz"
"At Long Last","Love & Sex","Miracles" and "Venus"?
i figured these should have made the album too, would have made it stronger!

i saw that interview w/ al magnoli on the Purple Rain dvd
and wondered why the album was only 9 tracks when Prince had over "100 tracks fully produced" for the project .

I think Magnoli exaggerated a bit when he said that. There was an interview with Bobby Z. in some fanzine a while ago, I think in ptown, and asked about outtakes other than Electric Intercourse and Wednesday he said that there weren´t really that many outtakes because they were very busy with shooting the film, so yes, there were a couple of outtakes, but not that many.

Are you sure you got those titles right ? Never heard about those songs before.
( Makeba ? Love and Sex ? It Iz ? )

WTF ??

I am 5 ??

In a word... No.

Purple Rain was always intended to be a single album from the start.
And there weren't really many outtakes either. The only ones I've heard of are..

Wednesday
Father's Song
Electric Intercourse (which was replaced by The Beautiful Ones)
G-Spot (which was replaced by Darling Nikki)

(and I don't know where you got those song titles from you mentioned,
but most of them are not real)

those titles come directly from Albert Magnoli!
I interviewed the guy back in 1997 (at his home in L.A)for my thesis.
when the discussion got around to Purple Rain I asked if he had any momentos
still around from that era,the only thing he had at home was a small framed picture of himself w/Prince and Steve Fargnoli on the set of the film and a tdk cassette tape which had these tracks on it.
I did not get the priviliage to hear the tape but I was allowed to copy what was written on the j-card,this is exactly what i transcribed from that j-card:
Prince/9-28-83/tdk SA 60
Beautiful Ones
Makeba
I Am 5
Land Of Milk & Honey
Love & Sex
Miracles
It Iz
At Long Last
G-Spot

I am going to try and contact A.Magnoli sometime this week and ask if he still remembers me.i will also go further into this cassette with him.
If i get the courage i may just come right out and ask if he will play me that tape!!!
i'll keep ya posted.

Now, that's pretty cool.
As there's a few tracks listed that are previously unheard of...
(hence my initial skepicism)

Beautiful Ones - released obviously
Makeba - unheard of
I Am 5 - recorded Sept '83, unreleased and not circulating
Land Of Milk & Honey - unheard of
Love & Sex - recorded Feb '84, unreleased and not circulating
Miracles - unheard of
It Iz - unheard of
At Long Last - unheard of
G-Spot - eventually released on Jill Jones' album

I don't presume that (most of) the tracks on that tape were ever intended for Purple Rain, the cassette in question was probably just something Prince gave to Magnoli to listen to in his car or something...lol
back then Prince gave tapes to just about any friend who asked for one!
sometimes there was never even a need to ask,he would just give someone a tape!
that is what Magnoli claimed when i asked how he aquired that tape.
Magnoli also told me that Prince used to give Apollonia tons of cassettes that he made especially for her to help get to sleep!
come to think of it,i have an old vhs somewhere with an interview that Apollonia gave to Entertainment Tonite or something back in 1985,if i am not mistaken ,she actually say's in the interview that Prince gave her a tape
with the song "Land Of Milk And Honey" on it during the filming of the movie!
she said that the song was an instrumental and that Prince claimed "it was better than a glass of milk and honey" and that the song would put her right to sleep!
i am going to investigate this further.

I remember that Apollonia quote. It was about Father´s Song.... she said that Prince had given her a tape with an instrumental song one night.I read a small and translated snippet of this interview in a small Prince biography published in Germany.(Prince- Vom Nobody zum Pop-Prinzen, page 173)

Apollonia had sleeping problems while filming Purple Rain and Prince gave her a tape, saying something like "..this is better than a glass of milk and honey."

Don´t know if that´s true, the book stole a lot from other (uncredited) sources.

Never heard about a song named like that though.

No. No source has ever indicated it was going to be a double album.

Plus it was to be a soundtrack album to a risky movie venture, AND it was to follow a double LP = Altogether makes the 2LP set a 'fan'-tasy.

If it turns out we're all wrong - FABULOUS! More info, more unheard music that could one day see the light, but as it stands - It was always going to be a single LP as Boris said.

I would venture to say that with having over 100 songs prepared for the project,at some point it surely would be feasible that a double lp set may have been proposed, albeit quite early on and ultimately dismissed entirely in the end.

I can say with 100% certainty that Purple Rain was always intended as a single
album right from the beginning, and at no point was it ever considered as a
potential double. Prince had a very clear idea about how the album would be
arranged from the start, and it pretty much stayed as nine tracks from day
one, with various tracks being replaced as better / more appropriate ones
were written.

Snap

I wonder how the album version of "Father's Song" sounds? It's not circulating, is it? I've only heard live versions (and the movie version, of course). "Father's Song" was one of the first songs I learned to play on the piano. I used the sheet music from the Purple Rain songbook.

Im not saying that it may have been a proposed double lp. I was just inquiring about that acetate of unreleased PR tracks
which I believe exists.

Right, I get you - You mean the one with all the fake track names on it.

AFAIK they were confirmed (as best as possible in the situation) as fakes a long, LONG time ago.

I'm sure this thread is a piss-take - Serves me right for opening my trap about it the other day in another thread. lol

Yeara ago, there was a rumor that 'Purple Rain' was originally planned as a 2-album set containing these 23 songs:

"Let's Go Crazy"
"Take Me With U"
"The Beautiful Ones"
"Computer Blue" (long version)
"Darling Nikki"
"2 Late Darling"
"G-Spot"
"Land Of Paradise"
"17 Days"
"When Doves Cry"
"Electric Intercourse"
"I Would Die 4 U"
"Baby I'm A Star"
"Take All 4 Granted"
"God"
"2 Many 2 Soon"
"Erotic City"
"The Loser In Life"
"Father's Song"
"My Special World"
an instrumental track (sometimes referred to as "Divinity")
"Jamming Til The Dawn"
"Purple Rain"

Of course, this information has turned out to be false and many of those songs don't even exist. For more info on this widespread rumor and fake tracklist,go here http://www.uptown.se/2005...o_22.shtml

oddly,"Possessed" wasn't listed in that fake tracklist, even though that song actually does exist, and an instrumental version can be heard in the movie.

I had heard that the song "Wednesday" never existed and was only a rumor. Even people who have access to the most hard-to-find stuff say it really doesn't exist and they're not sure when/where the rumor started. It is weird that a bootleg of it has never popped up but that probably doesn't mean anything b/c there does exist a 12" version of "Ballad of Dorothy Parker" that no one has heard either. It was going to be one of the Sign of the Times singles but was nixed for another song. Guess we'll never know.
~And even when I'm right, I'll be wrong...it's Automatic too.
