Thank God. I've wished for years that he wouldn't give a damn about the current music charts and just put out music that his fan base wants to hear. The radio if full of tired music for them but there's nothing for those of us that can't stand that kind of music. As far as making money, Prince has a big enough fan base buying his music to live comfortable. The current music buying public will only be with him while he's hot. His fan base has been with him through everything. When he loses his fan base, he will be nothing.

Fury doesn't sound like an a-side single at all to me. A Hendrix-ian funk/rock song doesn't seem like it'd do much on Top 40 nowadays. Maybe the rock charts, but would Universal want to aim a Prince single at the Rock charts?

Don't be sure about that, there are a LOT of people who r utterly sick to death of all the tired-ass, synthetic, b-grade bullshit hiphop/funk that is polluting the airwaves.

Exactly!

Rockability (hahahahaha) - must of been takin' the piss when he/SHE said:
LOL,
A-side single? This isn't the 80s any more. Its all about content and you need to move on and in. "Fury" is the answer to "Lets go Crazy."

Remember the chart to "Erotic City" or "She's Always in My Hair".

So even the 80s B-sides didn't make sense. But, thankfully 2000 has moved on. The masses want quality and they were served. Check the net for the response "Fury" has invoked.

Put down the crack-pipe buddy! Have no idea wot u were saying with the second paragraph pal (does anybody??? they were maybe the best B-sides of the last 30 years...), but let me address the 1st paragraph: What is wrong with Let's Go Crazy?? Can '50("i've been shot 9 times, give me credibility!") Cent' (or is that "fiddy" in ass-lickin' homey slang? WOTEVA!!) play ANYTHING with his sad bitch ass, musically speaking, or with his "group"/"posse"? (ahhhhh, NO!) dope sad c@*t! OK now lets go deeper: It may not be the 80's anymore, but stop and think about this - do u really believe everybody on the planet wants 2nd-rate, tired, played out bullshit: "grab my dick and the ho's love me cos my [rented] car looks good in a video (that my label OWNS me for)" 4gotten 2morrow imitation rap bruthas??? i think not - many/most laugh at those pathetic posers! Lennon/McCartney they NOT!!! And u DEAR to speak about content???? Nigga pa-lease!!! current hiphop/pop has WOT CONTENT????!!!!! pfffff - Joke u must!!!

The "masses want quality and they were served".... ah, OK, tell me please, how? and with who?? u make me piss my pants, u sad BOY from a very small hood.!

paragraph 3: "Check the net for the response "Fury" has invoked"
ok, have done - the response is maybe the BEST response Prince has recieved in 5, 10, maybe 15 years!!! OK, And this is bad why?? Rock was his biggest EVER moment - he's improved infinately since then, and he shouldnt repeat this style of music that he hasn't touchecd in 20 years, why??.....

You're right -- it has the same familiar riff (might I even say "hook"?).

somebody explain to me why it is so important to discuss marketing and how well we hope a song does on the charts? why is that so important? I just want to hear the album and I hope I dig the tunes. I wish him much success but if the album flops that has nothing to do with my opinion and how my ears hear the album. look at all the great albums that didn't do all that great in their initial run that are now considered classics.

Does anything at all that we discuss in the freaking Prince:Music & More forum really qualify as "important"?

Is P shooting himself in the foot again (a la Rave and Gold)? Why omit to perform the current single?

I'm wondering the same thing. As great as Fury is, why perform something that isn't your single if you aren't performing your single? That's Prince being Prince as usual.

I think the response to the SNL performance that we witnessed all across the net answers the question. Prince must have felt that the show's demographic audience would positively respond to a guitar-driven track. Clearly, he was right. If he had performed on MadTV, I'll bet "BS" would have been the choice.

I don't think performing Black Sweat would have had anywhere near the impact Fury has had on people. Guitar players who watched it are all talking about it. I'm in LA and the last two studios I was at, people had either seen it or others told them about it. He's started quite a buzz. Prince isn't just promoting a single, but a forthcoming album. There will be other opportunities to showcase Black Sweat, such as today's adds to MTV and VH1 and soon BET.

First time I heard Fury, I thought the exact same thing! cool

But this Fury is really an amazing track, love the vocals, the solos,... I think Contest Song is all in all more poppy.

I'm not so sure that BS would play as well live. It's more on the side of studio effects and I don't think it would showcase a live band as much as Fury did.
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

Thank you livewire and MarcelJ. I didn't even think about it like that. You have to play the songs that cater to a certain audience. In that case, Prince is a very smart man biggrin .

I'll have to say that I have been digging Fury nod
I found it very exciting watching it on SNL &
I am loving seeing him play so much guitar lately.
He played guitar through the whole Tamar club show & then tore
shit up on SNL woot! what fun!

This song has hit written all over it. With that serious, hard-ass guitar playing, P would generate sales and support among those who were awe-struck by his guitar solo at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but were disappointed by the lack of any Fender candy from Musicology.

Yeah, good thinking. Makes a lot of sense. He knows who watches it and look who responded mostly: sci-fi sites, springsteen sites, prog-rock sites. The ratings on SNL aren't what they used to be, so I bet he figured: grab who is watching right where it counts.
