Is the GUN microphone out?

I hope so. I think its kind of weak for Prince to use a microphone as if some gangsta he never was or will be.

There's much more to being gangsta than a microphone shaped like a pistol. I'm sure people weren't mistaking Prince as a hardcore rapper because he had that mic in his hand.

Obviously, because he isn't a rapper. So why the gun mic? are we going in circles here? eek

Weren't any of you around for "Diamonds and Pearls" and "prince"? It's not "gangsta" it's "Gangster Glam". Hence, the gun microphone. That gun/mic owes a lot more to Parliment/Funkadelic than it does to Gangsta Rap. It's more sci fi than street.

I don't care if he was trying to be "gangsta." I thought it was just a cool prop.

The gun microphone is long gone - Didn't he get rid of it around the time he got into JW - probably after the JOTY tour around 98/99.

It was definately borne from his desire to fit in with the Gangsta rap era, when he drafted in Big Fun (AKA The Gameboyz).

I get Skywalker's point though about the sci-fi element of P-Funk, I never thought of that before. nod

yup.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

I'm close to absolutely certain he used it on his tour of Australia in 2003.

And the musicology tour.

The gun-mic is all in how you look at it.

Could be Prince wantin to be "gangsta".

Could be a subtle message about using a gun for something other than violence.

Could be cause he thinks it looks cool.

I don't think he considers it a "gun" anymore - that's why he still uses it. For him it's just a microphone that he can use to point at the audience so they can sing along. And it's cool when he spins it cool

I never knew that. I thought he went off the idea in 98/99 because it was an image of violence or something.

In a soundcheck during the ONA tour in June, 2002, a girl asked Prince if he still had the gun mic. He repeated the words "The gun mic" and then laughed. He never said anything about it. We thought it was funny shit.

I love the gun microphone. He still uses it occassionally. I don't think he ever intended it to be interpreted as him being some kind of hard core thug.

He uses the gun mic to shoot his "verbal" and "lyrical bullets".

From what 3121 sounds like he'll have a full magazine for the first time in a while. Rave, NPS, a lot of the internet release stuff all shot out and unfurled that big red annoying "Bang" flag from the gun.

then shouldn't it have been in the shape of a key, because as we know -
music is the key to set ourselves free, from depression, drugs, and the increase of poverty.....

If they laughed at the name change...could you imagine if he went on tour pointed a key at the audience? "My name is Prince and I am FonKEY. He would have been locked up and the key given to Mayte.
