Okay I was trying to research this and compile of list of examples geek

Phrases that just don't quite sound right coming from the mouth of Prince. And before you purple-bible beaters come at me with ... "he can say whatever he wants blah, blah, blah" this post is all in good fun...

Things Prince has said for "street credibility" that just sound plain awkward

Example # 1:
"Let's make a toast, yo!" - Now © 1994 Controversy Music

"Is that my song playing on the radio? It could be G, I can't remember I wrote back in '84"" - Undisputed (The Moneyapolis Mix)

not quite colliquial, but irritating nonetheless...

Chips and Whips etc.

the reason it sounds wrong Prince using urban slang is simply his age. He's not in his teens or twenties.

At 48 he isn't in the queue @ McDonalds picking that shit up off of his peers.

it makes him sound faintly ridiculous and slightly desperate at times IMHO.

I couldn't agree more that Prince should leave the Urban slang to the kids.

His poetic way of writing other worldly lyrics, on the other hand, could never grow old. Between love, sex and psychedelic it would seem he's got a lot to say that will always be relevant.

"Circles of flowers or pyramids of sand, violet colored diamonds you got 2 understand" Incense And Candles

"Take your pick from the Japanese robes and sandles. Drink champagne from a glass with chocolate handles." 3121

This is stuff that could have come right out of the Prince Show skits. It's classic timeless Prince. I cringe whenever he sings about "jams, rims, hip U 2 that".

Prince using urban colloquialisms is sometimes weird because of your preconceived notions about him and who "prince" is.

This is the guy who, in the 80's, would sometimes use a pseudo british accent when speaking.

That being said, my preconceived notions of Prince come from the late 80's early 90's when he was spitting terms like:

"...Slammin...'"- U got the Look

"...my funk will leave ya dead cause it's good and plenty dope
all in all I'm still the king and all y'all the court.." - The Latest Fashion

".. here we are in my paisley crib..."

"..Honey them hips is gone That's alright, I clock 'em that way.." -Gett Off

So I am not bothered by Prince using "hip" slang. He does it naturally, and if it was Dr. Dre (who is 41) doing it you wouldn't care, but it's Prince and that bothers some.

Don't get me wrong. Certain slang is fine. Hell, the guy had me calling people Grace and Stella for a minute. Certain slang from Prince sounds natural. You should be able to admit that some of it sounds awkward as hell coming from Prince.

Your examples are good ones that prove it is natural...Sometimes

But c'mon. You know there are instances where he says certain things to appear hip for "street credibility" Whatever that line is in "Incense and Candles" about 'rims'... that's ridiculous. disbelief

And I wouldn't care if Dr. Dre said it because Dr. Dre has always been concerned with street credibility. Otherwise, he and DJ Yella would own up to those pre-N.W.A years where they were dressing up in lace gloves and paisley outfits like Prince.

Sometimes it comes off naturally and sometimes not. Let's face it, Prince is an old skool funkster. When he writes "aww, shake that thing come on, ahh bust it baby" from Love, it works very well because of the old skool flava. But, the stuff about cribs etc... Come on, it never sounds right. I ignore those lyrics most of the time, but I can't say I don't wish he'd leave it to the Dre's of the world.

Having said that, I'd LOVE to hear some tracks from Dre and Prince together. THEN he could say all the street shit in the world, because he'd have the right urban tracks and it would be in context.

right on the money. the thing with ol' boy is that he's been able to come up with his own brand of slang that's worked great, but still:

You know there are instances where he says certain things to appear hip for "street credibility" Whatever that line is in "Incense and Candles" about 'rims'... that's ridiculous. disbelief

it's not so much ridiculous as it is...it's just...him donning The Coat Of Street Cred™ is pretty much the equivalent of 'im putting on a dead kennedys t-shirt and bondage pants or something like that. just doesn't quite work out. prince excels more at doing (and saying) his own thing than someone else's.

And I wouldn't care if Dr. Dre said it because Dr. Dre has always been concerned with street credibility. Otherwise, he and DJ Yella would own up to those pre-N.W.A years where they were dressing up in lace gloves and paisley outfits like Prince.

I feel like we need a Public Service Announcement against musicians who Don The Coat Of Street Cred™ kinda like those Poser Mobile commercials. We can add Ron Isley and Charlie Wilson to the list too. falloff

I can tolerate that because I don't know what the fuck "chips and whips" are unless he's in an SM&M dungeon somewhere eating Lays or something and still I wouldn't know what the fuck he was talking about and "bump bump bump" is right out a B2K song. Remember that episode of "Cribs" when they had that big ass pic of Jimi, Prince, Michael, and James Brown right over that piano and dude was like "I'm gonna be just like my idol.." and was pointing DIRECTLY at P? That shit had me on the floor. I want Prince to stop. He's fucking 50. That shit is not cute.
