Musicology - Was The buzz as pumped as 3121 buzz is on the org? So I joined the org as Musicology's buzz had died down, so I was just curious, was the excitement at the org this strong when Musicology's release was nearing? or was it stronger? or is 3121's hype on the org strongest? Details please!

yeah, the musicology build-up buzz/hype was pretty strong...but it always is, with each new project.

I have to disagree. Many around here were very vocal about they're displeasure with "Musicology". There seems to be far fewer posts about "hating" 3121, then there were for "hating" Musicology.

yeah, but i think the question was more about the pre-album release excitement, given that 3121 hasn't been released yet.

absolutely not...people were very voacal with their displeasure with the song Musicology and hoped the albumn was better. The buzz was nothing compared to what we have with Black Sweat, Fury and yes even BL&B...not even close What I have found is that this forumn tends to be very divided among P's RB, Rock, funk and slow jams fans In particular the rock fans are very critical of Princes RBs songs and that was definately the case with Musicology (which on its own was a very strong song). However with 3121 BW, and very predicatably Fury (because it is a rock record) are both being received well by just about everyone. I hope those Rock fans can see the difference between the weak A Millions days from Musicology and the power and energy of Fury. [Edited 2/5/06 16:45pm] Dance... Let me see you dance

I think the "buzz" is very similar to what happened before Musicology was released.
before Musicology: 1. Fillmore performances in February -- great buzz... very good 2. Grammy opener with Beyonce -- great buzz... mostly good 3. Rock N Roll Hall of Fame -- great buzz... almost all good 4. "Musicology" video & single -- great buzz... not all that good (more for video than song itself) before 3121: 1. "Te Amo" single -- great buzz... not all that good 2. Several live performances headlining Tamar -- great buzz... some good 3. "Black Sweat" single & video -- great buzz... almost all good 4. "Fury" SNL performance -- great buzz... almost all good This time around we have three songs (four if you count Tamar's) that most fans are raving about before the album has even been released. It's MUCH MORE promising and hopeful that this album (3121) will be one of the best things Prince has ever done.

I wasn't on the org prior to the release of Musicology, but from a public perception there seems to be a MUCH bigger buzz around 3121.
EVERYONE is talking about the SNL performance. Black Sweat is a surefire HIT, especially with the video. Fury alone is better than anything on Musicology album. 3121 is going to be awesome! |

There was tremendous buzz around the Musicology release but there is something different about this one...I mean, with all the promotion, the two singles, Black Sweat and Fury, it just seems like this is a return to form, perhaps his best CD since The Gold Experience...so the buzz is hot!!!
The big thing with Musicology was the tour, Prince basically promoted the album with the tour. This album is being promoted more like a mainstream artist.

I see it like this, Musicology was for the non-fans. There were also big events to reintroduce P to the mainstream (2004 Grammy's and RRHOF). Plus who can forget the tour. The fans were still divided and it got worse as the months went on.
3121 is for us. It feels like this is for all of those who've stuck with him. Look at the responses from the songs we've heard already. The fans are loving at least one song from what's been heard, There is just something different about this. We're all for the most part unified that we're excited about 3121 and I haven't seen that since the 90's. I hope Prince goes everywhere with this project. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The Musicology Hype Machine really kicked into gear when Prince rocked the Grammy Awards. The next day this website was swamped with newbies and really slow moving. Still, even then, you had a lot of nay sayers talking that it was "Prince resting on his laurels" and that he'd "never sell out USA arenas on the tour, blah blah blah..".
This time, it seems like people, in general, are more optimistic and upbeat about the new album. However, as I have said before, I can see alot of people flipping and fronting like they never were geeked for "3121". It has happened with many many many Prince albums. Hate when it says cannot find server after you press the post response button.
I came on the org just around the same time he released Musciology. At the time I didn't spend a lot of time on here like I do right now. But I noticed that the couple days I was reading the posts there were mixed reviews about Musicology, and I stressed the couple days. Anyway overall almost everyone on here is very excited about the album and that is a big contrast to two months ago. From my perspective, I haven't bought an album in ten years and also that I didn't purchased any Prince album since 1996 when he made Emanicpation (which was alright, not great). And this album is going to the first time I am going back to the record store in years. And let's hope this album won't be the last time.

Well, it seems like there was much less publicity period for Musicology. I think the difference being that we had to wait less time between albums. It has been almost two years since then, and there was a period of about 9 months with no new music at all, until SST. And somehow a buzz about what the meaning of 3121 is got loose, and has been percolating for many months.

5 reasons why there is more buzz surrounding 3121:
1) There are a lot of newer fans who jumped on the bandwagon in 2004 and have since become "real" fans and joined the org . Before Musicology, Prince was still somewhat a forgotten artist. In many ways, the buzz around 3121 can be solely put down to the success of Musicology. 2) In early 2004, a lot of us more experienced fans were skeptical about a "commercial comeback". He hadn't really produced a successfull radio friendly album in a long time (not that that was a bad thing). The hype around Musicology grew as more people jumped on board, whereas now everyone is already on board and waiting for the captains orders! 3) It will be almost 2 years since he last released an album. 2005 was his least productive year on record so everyone is keen to hear what he's been up to. 4) "Te Amo Corozon" was released well in advance of the album. This may have given more time for people to specuate and anticipate the album (similar to the way "Gett Off" was released well in advance of Diamonds & Pearls). From memory, the lead single "Musicology" was only released a few weeks before the album and tour kicked off. 5) Judging by the first four songs we've heard now ("Te Amo", "Black Sweat", "BLB" and "Fury") it's obvious that 3121 is going to be a real mixed bag of treats. Maybe everyone is excited because they know there will be something for everyone. Still, don't get too excited by "the buzz". No doubt in a few months/years from now people will be dissing the whole project - the way everyone is dissing Musicology at the moment. It happens every time. If my memory serves me correctly, most orgers were really happy with Musicology when it first came out. [Edited 2/5/06 23:02pm] Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

i retract my previous statements. 'musicology' was basically an underground release that went more or less unanticipated and ignored, with little to no advance publicity.

Universal seems to be pushing this release more than Sony pushed Musicology. The feeling I got with Musicology was that the label signed on just to be part of a succesful project, but wasn't really pushing it as a big release.
Universal seems to be more aggressive (especially if anything from the promotional wishlist happens). Of course this could all change at the drop of a hat if the label or Prince decides to move on.

The buzz was different. Much of the Buzz was around Grammys/Hall of Fame/Return to Form/Huge tour of the Hits...there was a different momentum. I think Musicology was sort of an "Ah-choo" on top of all that. If he hadn't come out with an accompanying piece to all that was happening, he really would have lost the potential to be "relevent" again. As most would have only seen it as a "comeback" and him playing old stuff as opposed to there actually being new music to be had. This time it's all about the new music and it'll be all promotion around that. Christian Zombie Vampires
