John Blackwell is busy making his own CD with his band "The Matrix". He was also doing some session work for Puff Daddy's next CD (Which Blackwell has described as Puffy's 70's / 80's funk throwback album)

In 1998 winter tour of the NewPowerSoul Festival, the opening band was :

Kirk
Morris
Rhonda
Mike
Jerry
Cynthia
Marva
+Larry
+ o(+>

So yeah, and the same group played with the main act, o(+>

This isn`t a suggestion, or what i think what`s it gonna be like, this is nothing but a reminder.

Though I wouldn't fully agree with the "drummer = drummer" comment, please keep in mind that Michael B really was a very good drummer. He has gained a lot of respect in the Jazz scene after he left the Prince camp.

i'm the son of a drummer, and a very good one at that. i can say with experience that "a drummer is a drummer" is the opposite of a true statement!

You`re absolutly right.

I like Carol by the way. I liked her before she joined this band. She worked with McComb, amongst others. She plays soulful, and she`s playing pocket, and she`s tight as well. I knew her before she joined the 3121 gang. It`s gonna be great, i am sure about that.

Who's Carol? confuse I think you meant to type Cora...
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I agree that we'll just have to wait and see who is in the band by the time the show hits the road. Given Prince's past history, it could certainly change several times over by the time spring/summer rolls around.

As to Blackwell, I do hope he's getting some time to spend with his family and get centered.

I also remember reading the interview Prince gave to Modern Drummer magazine during the Musicology tour. He said that he felt really blessed to have the chance to work with John, but that he felt it was getting to the point where he had taught him everything he knows and John would need to be cut loose to fly on his own. From a career perspective, it wouldn't be in John's best interest to stay with Prince forever and he's built quite a reputation in his own right. If he struck out in a different direction, I'd miss his flavor with Prince, but I'd be happy that he's getting the chance to stretch himself and continue to grow.
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

he's too good to be thought of as "prince's drummer"...i'd love to hear him with other artists, and to think of him as a drummer who has worked with prince, among others.

nod I said the same, Anx, when he joined P's band. "That cat's too good to be playing with Prince for too long..." lol How often does one say that kind of thing?

Blackwell mentioned at a drum clinic in Sydney when asked who else he would like to play with, he said "Sting" and "The Rolling Stones"

eh, john would have been great in sting's 'bring on the night' band, but these days? i think he'd be bored. i can see him tearing up the drums on a stones tour, though. nod

Well, like I posted above, I'm not convinced Prince has "given up" on John, but if so, I would like to see:

sheila e. Sheila E. SHEILA E. SHEILA E! woot!

ay yay yay. i know bobby z. is a very competent all-around musician and producer, but as a drummer i think the only thing he has going for him is nostalgia points for being in the revolution. i think if they all got back together for a reunion show, the actual outcome would be a lot less spectacular than what a lot of people are imagining it would be like.

Co-sign. For all the crap people gave Kirky J's drumming, Bobby Z. isn't much better.

It could be the case that Prince wants to keep all the money to himself as usual. That's why he switches up band members so he won't have to pay them more for the next tour. eek

I agree with you but i am interested in the nostalgia ...I think the best prince ever was the revolution era prince...bobby z laid it down lovely on the parade tour... I know it wouldnt be the same now...but i can dream.. wink
