I am by no means comparing Tamar here, but is that what you say when you hear Chaka or any other queen singing? I thought she just sang the song. She didn't need to resort to theatrics like Jessica Simpson who needs to jump in order to get the notes to come out. She seemed very natural and fluid. An experienced soul singer knows when to... just not try so goddamn hard. I'm talking about not trying to squeeze your entire repetoire into every single phrase. It's not about the presence of soul and gospel traditions of inflections, embellishments and runs, but rather about knowing how and when to best apply them. It just comes down to a lack of finesse and experience... she needs to be told to calm the fuck down and get the song right first of all, instead of trying to showcase her vocal dexterity at each and every opportunity. That's what I meant by "oversang". It sounds amateurish to my ears, and I daresay there is a great number semiprofessional session vocalists out there who could give a much better delivery, albeit without her looks. Hence the comparisons with Prince's other ill-fated female protoges! The actual timbre of her voice is okay for the most part, when she was in tune. Like I say, she has volume but not really the skill and experience to make best use of it. Perhaps I'm being unkind - I've only got that one song to go by. I loved the performances especially the cute little part at the end "superstar"...that was really cute. Glad to see him w/everyone at the end...very sociable. Tamar?!?!?!?!?! I liked the twins, very pretty and as someone else here stated...very "proud Mary". But the whole girl group thing was very distracting as were her vocals...She is no Rosie Gaines...she was a singer! | |

I'm a complete idiot and kicking myself for missing SNL. I was looking forward to it and thinking about it all week. I can't believe I forgot to watch/tape it. Does anyone know when it will be repeated or how I can view the SNL episode?
